curls and birth control pills

This is actually really interesting to me ... When I hit puberty my hair was much curlier than it is now. I started on BC 6 years ago and have been on since ... My hair is still curly, but definitely more wavy and less of ringlets than it used to be. I thought it was damage (which probably is a big part of it) but wonder if the BC could also be a contributor.
Hair Type: Combo of 2A, 2B and 2C ... with a weird straight underlayer
Fine, normal porosity, normal elasticity.

Currently using:
Low Poo: Yes To Cucumbers Color Protection Shampoo
Cowash: VO5 Moisture Milks
Styler: KCCC
Gel: Herbal Essences Totally Twisted Gel, Tigi Bed Head Creative Genius gel

Started CG 9/10/13
I think I may have found the answer to my long-lasting hair woes!
Over the years my big, thick curls have been dropping away, leaving me with some ringlets but mostly wavy/straight hair and I'm absolutely devastated by it.
I've tried cutting it short to remove all the weight from it, have used countless products as an attempt to bring back my curls but nothing has worked. Recently several people have suggested that it could be hormonal and, thinking about it, my hair problems started quite soon after I went on Birth Control about 5 years ago.
My periods leave me feeling faint, I vomit and I can hardly get out of bed so I consider BC to be almost necessary for me to live a happy life but if it is causing my hair problems I would possibly rather suffer the pain once a month because I miss my curls so much.

Has anyone gone off the pill completely and found their curls have returned? I take multivitamins every day.
I have also gained at least 2/3 stone in weight since going on the pill which I have never yet managed to lose.

So, I went to the doctor and she said I had the onset of PCOS and that in order to save my ovaries, I should go back on the pill or take another hormonal medicine. I opted for the other medicine but it didn't work. Needless to say, I went to another doctor and found out more information and exactly why birth control would be the better route. Unfortunately, the time I wasted with the first doctor cost me an ovary. Now, I'm noticing that my hair "resists" certain products around the time of my cycle. I'm guessing this could be due to the fluctuation of my hormones, but I don't know. I plan on talking to my doctor about it when I go in again.

I was just about to start a thread asking people if birth control has affected their hair! What's weird about the pill, at least for me, is that I get side effects really late and randomly. But that's a whole other story!

How has tri cyclen lo been working for you and your hair? I'm on that pill too (but will be switching in 2 weeks) and if hormonal changes are making your hair unpredictable then tri cyclen lo may not be the best because your hormone intake changes every week. Just a thought.
Mostly 3B curl with some 3A and 3C mixed around. Super long, few inches away from the waist.

Medium-Coarse
Some kinking
Normal elasticity (dry & wet)
Low porosity at roots, normal/low mid-shaft, porous ends

Shampoo: Live Clean Apple Cider clarifying shampoo, or L'Oreal Everstrong
Conditioner: Garnier Fructisse Triple Nutrition
Leave in: Garnier Fructisse Sleek and Shine
Gel: homemade flaxseed gel
Mousse: Got2B FatTastic Mousse
Sorry for the long post, I wanted to include the important information about the pharmacology of BC and the medicine involved.
I promise it is worth the read!

Birth control and hormonal changes in general can drastically change curl pattern. I am living proof! I also believe that you don't necessarily have to go off of birth control to keep your curls!

Birth control definitely affected my hair, specifically the Nexplanon (progestin based) implant in my arm. I had it for four months, this was during first year of uni so I was stressed and also drinking a lot. Within the last two months of having the implant I started experiencing excess shedding. Back when I used to use brush my hair before the shower, I'd literally had what should have been a months worth of hair on the brush in one brushing session every time. Clumps would come out in the shower too, of course at the time I was in denial of hair loss. Only when I looked it up and found out that if the hair has bulbs, it is hair loss rather than damage. And only now do I realise how bad it was.

I finally had it taken out, best decision of my life! I also stopped drinking alcohol as much, tried to exercise more and I stopped brushing my hair. Four months later I did go on the pill (micrognon, something like that) which thankfully didn't affect my hair this time. Now it is fully grown back to it's full thickness slowly and surely after two years and lots of haircuts!

I will post some pictures on here later
1st picture is before my hair loss, the next bad quality but I didn't have many pictures from that time, but I had medium thick hair all my life, it was horrible to have hair that was size of a bouncy ball when put into a bun. The next is the transition last year and the last one is a recent picture from yesterday, I am extremely happy to have it back! The amount of baby hair i had from regrowth was ridiculous!

Oh my goodness, that's a big difference! I actually didn't realize that BC could affect hair that much. I'm glad you're back to yourself again, your hair looks great!
