Advice On Overcoming Dryness.
I am trying to understand having low porosity hair. I have been trying to really focus on my properties. I only wash my hair 2x a week. One of those 2 days I low-poo (in my signature). I am curious; however, after about 2-3 days, my hair becomes extremely dry and the crown frizz becomes out of control. Even if my hair gets out of control before my wash days, I just stick it out, because I don't want to condition too much.

My question is, what techniques do low-po curlies use in order to sustain the utter dryness? Basically, this is like a 'second-day' hair question, but more specific to low-po curlies.

Thank you for any advice in advance!

I was just thinking back to the time I found out about my 3b/4a low porosity dry hair. I was really concerned about finding the correct product(s).

Let's start with the questions:

Have you tried the CG method?
It possible that your hair may not like the lo-poo.

Did you take a look at the ingredient list on products you are using? Your hair may not like cones.

I used Suave conditoner for a while and wondered why my hair was still dry. It has a cone that dried my hair. Once I switched conditioner out. It was smooth sailing.

Are you consistent with your regimen? Trying/using many products will yield questionable results. Which I have just witnessed with my regimen.

When I notice my hair & dryness all the time , my goal was moisture retention. Once I found that product to assist in that goal, I made sure I was consistent with product and procedure until I saw results.

Now, these results worked for me. I'm unsure how they will work for you. But know that consistency is key.

You say your hair is dry but you don't want to condition too much? Can you explain your reasoning because the obvious solution to your problem would be for you to condition more.

Here are the ingredients for the LowPoo

Water (Aqua, Eau), Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Glycerin, Coco-Betaine, PEG-75 Lanolin, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Polyquaternium-7, PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Melissa Officinalis Extract, Humulus Lupulus (Hops) Extract, Cymbopogon Schoenanthus Extract, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Extract, Achillea Millefolium Extract, Polyquaternium-10, Propylene Glycol, Aminomethyl Propanol, Diazolidinyl Urea, Iodopropynyl Butylcarbamate, Fragrance (Parfum)

My hair has trouble with polyquats, especially 4, 7 and 10. I'm told that they don't build up, but something stays on my hair and makes it difficult to absorb products. I get frizz when wet. Needed a strong surfactant to get my hair back to normal. Now, I stay away from them. The Set it Free has beeswax, so that could be coating your hair. And last of all, the Shea M Smoothie was just "heavy." Sat on my hair and coated it. IMHO, any of those products could be causing you problems.

I also don't understand why you say your hair is dry, but you're afraid to over condition it.

I use a lot of really rich products as my stylers. Never have to DT despite using a lot of protein. Are you doing any protein--PTs, etc.

Just be careful .....
Cantu Leave-In has Trimethylsilylamodimethicone, and
Lanolin Oil in it. These ingredients has be known to leave my hair very dry.

You could also try hot oil treatments and message your scalp with a oil such as jojoba, grapeseed, and/or coconut.

Drinking more and more water is good too. I overlook the benefits of water when it comes to dry hair as well as eating vegetables, salads etc. With summer coming up I'm definitely going to increase my water intake :)

Because over conditioning results in flat and oily curls...BTW, conditioning is NOT always the answer.

Thank you. I have been lessening the use of the low-poo and it isn't as dry. The set if free I barely use now. Too much conditioner can result in MY hair getting flat and feeling oily and sticky. Hair responds differently.

My fine, low-po hair Loves protein, you don't have to buy an expensive PT though. You could start with any RO with protein high up in the ingredient list, even some cheaply brands (VO5) have lines with protein. There's also a gelatin PT that's very popular though it didn't do much for me, my hair seems to respond better to regular doses of protein rather than once a week blasts.

The banana babyfood pt is also a cheap alternative.

When my hair starts feeling dry, mostly on third days, I mist my hair with water+ drop of conditioner. Then I smooth a drop of CJ Beauticurls LI over my hair, concentrating on the dry parts (usually the ends) and then scrunch while hanging my head upside down. When it is dry I pineapple for the night. Next day my hair has recovered and feels and looks great.
