In Need of Humectant Free Products (Curl Booster/Activator/Definer)

So I live in NYC and it gets pretty humid here in the summer. My product regimen (Devacurl No Poo, Devacurl one condition as a rinse out, JessieCurl Aloeba Daily Conditioner as a leave in, Curly Hair Solutions Curl Keeper, and Devacurl Light Defining Gel) was working really well for me until the humidity levels started rising and I'm noticing more halo frizz and that my style isn't lasting as long.

Pretty much all of these products have glycerine and humectants. I'm not really looking to change my shampoo or rinse out conditioner but I would like to find styling products that are humectant free or less humectanty.

Any suggestions? Especially for a replacement for the Curl Keeper. I really need a curl booster/activator/definer with little to no hold in my regimen because my roots tend to be flat and I like my curls to be as springy as possible.

I only use CG friendly products. My hair is 3b, normal to fine, higher density, low to medium porosity.

My hair is fine/low porosity. I live just north of Philly, so have very similar weather conditions. My hair prefers the more natural products. I stay away from chemicals, especially polyquats. If I keep the moisture/protein balance right, humectants aren't a big problem for me. I usually use a minute amount of a really rich product as my leave in and a "jelly" product as my final layer. Today, the dewpoint is in the 70's and I'm not having any issues with my hair "growing" or loosing definition. Most of my current favorites are in my signature.

There really aren't a lot of humectant-free styling products out there. The only one I can think of off the top of my head is Jessicurl Confident Coils (which I use and really like). It has epsom salt in it, which is a good curl activator. However, it really doesn't have much of a hold. For a low-humectant gel, I would recommend Pattern Pusha by Curl Junkie. It only has a little propylene glycol and panthenol very far down on the ingredients list.

However, you should also experiment with different types of humectants and see how they affect your hair. For me, glycerin is the only one that causes problems. Products with other humectants, such as propylene glycol, don't seem to cause any extra frizz for me.

I agree with KathyMack--humectants usually aren't an issue for nonporous/low porosity hair. Actually, we are the ones who should be using them the most since our hair is naturally sealed off from moisture (it's hard to get the moisture in but once it's there, it stays there). Humectants will take the moisture we bring to our hair during the conditioning and hold it there even after our cuticles "seal off", so to say.

You should try deep conditioning more often to stabilize your hair's internal environment so that the external weather won't effect it so much. I know for me I like to use a humectant-free leave-in (like CJ Beauticurls Argan/Olive conditioner) and then a styler that has humectants in it and my hair has a good balance. I also use a deep conditioner with protein in it about twice a month or so and my hair is happy. (I live in GA, btw.)

Good luck with your experimentation.
