What are your best tips for keeping lipstick from turning on you, if this happens to you?

I found the perfect shade, (Laura Mercier Mango) tried it on in Sephora, and 2 mins. later, it is darker. Nothing new - this happens with all my lipsticks.

So I'm considering using a thick coat of very pale lipstick underneath, on top of foundation to keep this from happening. My lips are very dark to start, but this is a good, creamy, heavily pigmented lipstick - doesn't help. Any good tips - something I am overlooking or something that works for you?

OT, some idiot salesperson once said my lips were so dark because as a kid, oxygen didn't get to my brain.
2/c Coarse hair med. density.
Highly porous. Color over grey.
I love all the Curl Junkie products. Still experimenting with gels and curl creams. Still hoping for 2nd day hair....

I have not a clue. I have heard a few people say some different lipsticks kind of oxidized on them. They could try 4 and one would change. It seems like they shouldn't. Not like foundation at least, but you never know. I have heard more say their lipstick changes because of their natural color coming thru. Have you ever tried muting out your lips before applying the lipstick? I personally have not, but it is something I have seen done a lot. I would probably have to if I wanted to wear some lighter shades. People run their foundation or concealer over their lips and then put on the LS so you get the true color. That is the only suggestion I have.

Maybe TNB has some tips and tricks.
