Acne due to hormones, I need help :(

Like Tree8Likes

I'm having a huge problem with hormonal acne since losing my pregnancy 3 weeks ago. This is worse than high school! It's on my cheeks, all across my chin, my neck, across the back of my shoulders, on my upper arms, my chest... ugh!! How do I get rid of this? I'm sure my diet isn't helping right now either. I'm literally eating my feelings. This is taking quite the hit to my self esteem, which is the last thing I need right now. I don't know what to use or do for this. None of my current products seem to be touching it and it's getting worse. I use an Olay scrubby cleanser or my fragrance free super gentle body wash and either jojoba oil or alternate a couple of natural moisturizers. Any suggestions? Or will I just have to deal until hormones even out? I can't stand this stuff on my neck.

I really am so sorry about everything, Amy. I hope you and the hubby get through this difficult time.

With the acne, I've got a few suggestions that might help, but as it's hormonal acne, that's always a toughie:

Do you wash your face in the morning too? If not I'd suggest doing so with a gentle cream cleanser. Only use the scrub for nighttime as you will dry out your skin using it too much and cause more oil to be produced. A creamy cleanser in the morning will help a lot, while not messing with your skin's oils. Also, when you scrub do so very gently.

I know for hormonal acne diet is super important and things like dairy are meant to be pretty bad, so if you're drinking milk etc. I'd say to cut it out and switch to something like almond milk.

Really though, I'd say to nip over to your GP and ask for their advice. They'll be able to offer you quite a few suggestions and maybe even a 'diet plan' of foods to not eat and foods that will help.

Hmm. This is a tough one. Have you ever tried calcium d-glucarate or N-acetyl cysteine? My doctor recommended them to me because my body seems to get overloaded with toxins (I'm not a great eliminator), so the body starts recycling the toxins--which I think sometimes shows up as acne.

I'm so sorry about your pregnancy!

Allie - I was thinking about switching to a cream cleanser as I've heard the scrubbies can irritate acne. I need to keep up with face washing better, but mostly I wash at night. I'll try to wash twice a day again. And oh gosh, it's so hard to cut out milk! I'm supposed to be dairy free, but I've tried and it's so hard. I've thought about going to the dermatologist or something. However, I'm learning that certain acne treatment ingredients are not good for pregnancy, and we will be trying again soon. I'm sure the derm could give me a list. It's so frustrating dealing with this at an adult age.

Six, I feel for you. I've had adult acne. Best advice: see a dermatologist. You need help from the inside out - not just stuff you put on your skin. Sorry you are going through this - so frustrating!

Oh, I just read that you are trying to get pregnant. Maybe that would solve the problem! If you are pregnant, you definitely don't want to be taking meds. God luck to you for both things.

I love all the Curl Junkie products. Still experimenting with gels and curl creams. Still hoping for 2nd day hair....

Six, I am sorry about your pregnancy.

I agree with CP, again. A dermatologist will tell you what is needed for your skin due to the hormonal changes. This also lets you know what will happen the next time you become pregnant and you will be prepared.

Great point juanab! My skin started become horrible when getting pregnant (everything was so oily!), and even worse after the loss. It's slowly getting better the past few days since my body is working again and I'm mid-cycle now. I started back up oil cleansing, so I'm hoping that will help. But not much I can do about body acne. I'll have to call my derm and see what I can do.

@sixelamy, I'm so sorry to hear both about the pregnancy and the resulting acne problem.

I recently experienced acne due to hormones too, I came off of the Mirena after 5 years and my skin became my worst enemy. After trying just about every product at Ulta, Clinique, Estee Lauder...you name it I tried it. I finally decided to go to the dermatologist. He gave me an evening and daytime gel that worked amazingly the only thing that sucked was I can't take them if I get pregnant. I've recently switched to Rodan and Fields and I've been pleasantly surprised by the results...I had never heard of R&F and was very hesitant to try it but I would definitely recommend it. I'm still doing research to find out if it's safe during pregnancy/breastfeeding.

Thanks SortaRican! Sorry you are dealing with the same thing as far as hormones go. I've never heard of Rodan and Fields either. I will check that out. My face is a bit better, but not the body portion. Still have it all over my upper arms, shoulders, and neck

I started using Clearasil, and while it helps the acne, my face gets extra oily because it makes it so dry. Makes me nervous about getting something from the dermatologist as it will probably cause the same thing - the ingredients seem to be extra harsh in a lot of those products. I'm thinking about going back to jojoba oil for my face. The body is a separate issue.

Six, the wash that was prescribed for me is not drying at all. Also the acne cream I prescribed wasn't drying either. Did you know even oily skin has to be moistured? My dermatologist recommended cerave am and pm moisturizers. I use the pm for both day and night.

Here's a suggestion: have you tried essential peppermint oil? Dilute it with water about 5 to 10 drops in 6 ounces. More is less, really, because too much and your skin will feel like it's burning. Not good. But just enough and you get this nice tingling and cooling sensation which is quite refreshing. As an added bonus, peppermint is also very calming. It might help you to relax a bit, unwind, and destress.

Also, you can try meditation. You don't have to sit and hum either. I like either silence or calming music and I stretch. I just take the time to stretch every muscle. Also walking can be good meditation too.

I do hope your days turn around. It's a very difficult situation. One day at a time.

I finally gave in and switched to R&F after my skin started peeling from using the Rx from the dermatologist and being out in the sun so I kind of understand your fear with going to the dermatologist.

I'm glad you found something to help with your facial acne, I didn't try clearasil with my recent breakouts but I used it as a teenager growing up....I feel like a lot of those drugstore products really dry my face out. My body hasn't been too bad, maybe just my back and chest but I use the R&F products on my neck and chest as well so it has really helped there too.

There are! However, if you just want to add a bit to like shampoo, conditioner, or even water will help. A warmer is a great idea as well.

I would stay away from those acne washes like benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, etc. They tend to dry out the skin and then causes the skin to make excess oil which causes clogged pores and more zits. I don't know about you guys, but I was never able to break that cycle. Those drugs never helped my acne and then I became allergic and that broke the cycle.

sixelamy - so sorry about your loss.
as far as the acne goes i think your idea of using jojoba oil is good. maybe even try soothing some on your arms, etc. at night, see if that helps calm your skin, regulate it. can't hurt, right?
