Crazy dude compares cats on the street to special ed people

You may remember that I've rescued a cat several times that wanders down Mass Ave. She's missing half a tail from a dog attack and I'm always worried about her getting hit by a car. Anyway, I'm on a listserve for people in my town and he's put up a missing cat post. I have seen the cat so I resonded (none too kindly).

I wrote:
The last time I saw your cat was Sunday in the Dunkin' Donuts barely escaping the wheels of an SUV that didn't notice her as she crossed through the parking lot. She didn't get away thinks to her own kitty wits, but thanks to someone (ahem) who stopped the SUV.

I feel bad for Carmen. I hope she's not injured. I hope someone scooped her up and took her home. If I didn't have two of my own I'd have considered it myself. One of these days that poor kitty's luck is going to run out and that's going to be squarely on your shoulders. Cats shouldn't be roaming free. It's not any more in their nature to let them roam than it is to let dogs roam free. They're both domesticated animals. We are their caretakers and you are doing a very poor job as hers.
And he responded with the cat's life story, but the part that stuck was this:

Thanks for the sighting. In the morning, afternoon, evening? Other than being hit by a vehicle, or stolen, my fear is that she entered a building, car, or truck to explore and is locked in there unbeknownst to the owner.

I understand your position. Some feel special ed children and adults should be locked up in state institutions instead of group homes and exposed to mainstream situations too. Some parents want all kids locked up and not free to play or bike outside with friends as a result of media fear mongering. I see halfway house residents on the street without supervision, and they manage to survive also.

I don't even know what to say to that.

Tell him that his cat isn't a person, and that most people are more than 12 inches tall and can be seen when they cross the street.

^^ This guy is ridiculous. He's not living in this world. Here's the rest of his letter:

I don't kick Carmen out of the house, she is free to come and go via a cat door. She is a member of the neighborhood and loved by many. Caged indoors, she would be miserable, bored, fat, and exist in a half-dead state. I got Carmen from a friend who thought she was a stray, and definitely a young, outdoor kitten then. I paid to have her neutered at a shelter, but in the 12 years since, she has not wanted to be confined inside.
I've tried several times, but she will not allow another cat to share the house, despite the opportunities for entertainment and companionship. Outside, she is OK with other cats, just not in her house. She even ignores the caged chinchilla a housemate keeps. She used to ignore dogs until the one that injured her tail. She chases off raccoon and skunk,
the latter working less well. I've not spotted predators in the neighborhood in many years.

Several years ago she was stolen by a neighborhood cat lady and exiled to her brother's farm in NH. After seeing my posters up for weeks, conscience got the better of him and he returned her home. Never before had one of his barn cats climbed to the peak of the roof to lay down there. He didn't give me a sense that she was happy there, nor making his responsibility caring for her any easier. Many neighbors asked about Carmen and were happy at her return, me most of all.

I would appreciate it if you kept an eye out for her and pass the word. She is greatly missed.

Is he one of those people who train their cats to use toilets?
Sorry but LOL, he cannot be serious.

By the way, I've since gotten an email from his housemate telling me that he's a good person and everyone loves the cat.

what the effe?!?!?!?!

first of all, when you are asking the neighborhood to look after your cat, thats a problem!! IMO its like letting your child run wild and saying, "hey, my kid likes being outside, so dont run her over"

Sane people do not want special ed people locked away. but sane people also takes responsible for their children. they dont let them wonder around by themselves where it is not safe.

my cat also enjoys going out, but she is not in the city where she risk getting hit. stays on my dad's block and doesnt go into the street, which is usually deserted throughout the day. i know for a fact there are cats who are outdoor cats, who would be miserable indoors, Poe is one of them. I also know these animals should not reside in high traffic urban areas, (which is why Poe is now living with my dad in the suburbs, instead of me in my busy dc neighborhood).

if he really cared for this cat he would realize how dangerous this is, and would let her go live on a farm where it is safer for her to roam outside. he is just being selfish and stupid, and maybe he should be locked away!
He sounds more than a bit kooky.
