The Byzantine Rite
I'm very interested and I haven't been privliged to attend the Divine Liturgy yet. What can you tell me about it? I've watched some on youtube and it is BEAUTIFUL beyond words. Anybody?
I'm glad you liked it!
In brief, there are specific parts to it:
Liturgy of Preparation (done in private)
Liturgy of Catechumens (or Liturgy of the Words)
Liturgy of the Faithful (Holy Communion takes place in this part)
The most commonly used is the Liturgy of St John Chrysostom.
Was the Liturgy in the video you watched sung/chanted? It usually is, and there won't be any music.
We also make the Sign of the Cross from right to left. :angel7:
I have actually been to a Russian Orthodox Liturgy and I'm thinking its pretty similar. Yes the video I watched was sung. Very nice. I'm accustomed to the Gregorian Chant though. We have attended the Traditional Latin Mass for some time now. I'm just starting to learn that the Byzantine Rite is ever MORE traditional! Amazing and exciting!
It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever experienced. I live near a Ukrainian Catholic Church and every once in a while I go by myself early on a Sunday morning to meditate on the divine - it's like a spiritual house cleaning for me.
I also love the Coptic rite and have attended a few times but the Egyptian church is much further from where I live. I think I would consider joining an African Orthodox congregation in the future.
