I went as a guest with a girlfriend to her yoga class yesterday. The instructor talked to us about the upcoming winter solstice and how it is celebrated as an acceptance of death and endings, letting go, and moving forward with birth and growth and new beginnings. Then we actually read Ecclesiastes Chapter 3, going around and every one reading a verse. Then we warmed up and began the 108 sun salutations that should welcome the upcoming solstice and the return to longer days and more sunshine.

Needless to say, 2 1/2+ hours of sun salutations isn't for everyone, so the instructor said when we want or need to leave, just do so respectfully, she doesn't expect all of us to do them, she just wanted to provide us an environment in which we could do so. Needless to say, I didn't do all of them. My friend and I stayed for an hour and then I looked over at her and she opened her eyes really wide, I nodded yes and we rolled up our pads and crept out. The instructor mouthed "thank you" at us and we waved "bye" and ran!

I am so sore today!!!
the last yoga class i went to was a hot yoga class (not bikram but similar). it was through a studio i got a deal from on livingsocial. i'd been to a couple of sessions before so i knew what to expect. i did over an hour of the class then i laid on my mat and took a nap the last 20-30 mins. it's a good class. the heat is exhilarating and draining all at the same time. i will be going a few more times before the end of the year when my deal expires.

in my last yoga class, I managed to get my legs up for my headstand

and... not in my most recent but a recent one, one of the songs we used in class was REM's "Losing My Religion" which made me think of the other thread and giggle just a bit.

I don't take classes, I just do my own thing. But this last week I made a little progress in my front splits and balance poses.

I do yoga at home regularly (again finally!) but I sneak in a class whenever I can. In honor of all of you who can do a headstand or have ever tried one, it's tough! Congrats! I can sometimes do a teddy bear headstand - that's where your knees on on your elbows. That's as good as it gets for me. However, below is what I'd like to be able to do compared with what I am really capable of (I'm sure you can figure out which is which):

to be clear - my headstand looked NOTHING like that!!! LOL. It was supported with forearms down

and I'm VERY fond of my bolster (second picture) - use it a LOT for reclining poses - one class I take (restorative) some weeks we never even stand up!!

I've taken two classes now! The first one yesterday was a restorative class, which was really nice and I think a good way to ease myself into practicing yoga. I felt really relaxed yet energized afterward, and my back pain temporarily went away.

The one I took today was Vinyasa style, so the poses went by pretty quickly, and for some of them I was looking around the room like, "Wait, what are we doing?!" and adjusting for most of that time, but I was sort of catching on to the ones we repeated toward the end. Along with various gentle corrections, I got a "beautiful" for my tree pose, and a woman who had clearly been doing this for awhile give me a "Good job!" and a wink at the end of the class, which was nice. Hooray for positive reinforcement! I'm very glad that the atmosphere of the class was basically the exact opposite of the passive aggressive competitive one others described in the derailed thread.

IDK if I'll ever bother correcting their pronunciation of my name, since I can't afford to come back after this free week. I'm hoping I'll have learned enough by then to be able to practice at home.

I have two choices for tomorrow's class: one at midday and another in the evening taught by candlelight. I'll be less able to look around and figure out what's going on in a candlelit room, but...how can I pass up the chance to do yoga by candlelight?! It's all speshul and whatnot!

Update: I've never had muscle soreness in my upper back before! In case I doubted that I'd gotten a workout, I am actually feeling it now! Cool.

I won't be able to go to the candelight class tomorrow, but there's another one on Thursday. Maybe I'll be able to attend that one.
