Do you prefer this lamp shade in white or beige?
Which color lamp shade looks best--white or beige?

Buy Mix and Match Bell-Shaped White Medium Lamp Shade

I want to use it with this lamp as I do not like the shade that it comes with:

what colour are the walls and furniture, CS?

i use creamy-white shades on my lamps in all my warm-toned rooms, but if you've got cool-toned walls, you might want to go with the white.

(i love the shape of that lamp shade, i have similar small ones on my bedside tables.)

Curlswirl 06-29-2013 09:50 AM

My walls are off white.

Curlswirl 06-29-2013 09:52 AM

I am not crazy about it in the beige color:

I wish they had it in ivory:(

Oops I forgot to mention the furniture colors----taupe chair, brown bookcases and a russet/burgundy color chair. The floor is brown hardwood.

fabric paint in ivory?

Curlswirl 06-29-2013 11:59 AM

Thanks, that is a great idea or I can just settle for white. It is so hard to find a nice lamp shade! It certainly doesn't clash. Probably over time the white color might become ivory.

I agree with Rou: Beige or off-white is the better fit for a room with warm colors, and you could paint the lampshade to get the color you want. It may be easier to paint the white one.

Curlswirl 06-29-2013 01:40 PM

Thanks for your feedback. I agree that white is just not the right color. Maybe I will just buy it in beige.

rouquinne 06-29-2013 02:17 PM

if they don't look right, you will be able to bring them back, won't you?

because then i'd do the white ones and get ivory fabric paint at Michael's.

Folk Art Fabric Paint doesn't come in ivory or cream, but you can get the regular acrylic paint and mix it with Textile Medium. make sure you wet the lampshades first and let them dry to get the sizing off, then brush on thin layers of your paint until you get the right colour.

Could I paint over a silky fabric? Which paint at Michael's would you recommend and which paint brush?
I never painted on a lamp shade in my life!

claudine191 06-29-2013 05:32 PM

I have a shade like that. It's beige.

White shades seem too stark to me.

sure you can paint over a silky fabric.

like i said - wet it down first and then let it dry because it will have some coating on it and the paint might not go on evenly.

FolkArt is the brand at Michael's with the most colours. for those lampshades try two 2 oz. bottles of colour and one bottle of Textile Medium. mix them up in a re-sealable container so you can add a thin layer until you get the right tone. let it dry completely between coats of paint.

a 1-inch synthetic brush will work and it will clean up with soap and water.

let me know if you decide to do it and how it works.

Thanks Rouquinne! I am not a DIY kind of person but I might try it. But if I chicken out, maybe I will get the beige version:/ If I get beige ones, would they look okay next to a taupe chair and a tan couch? I have always had off white lamp shades!

Curlswirl 06-30-2013 07:58 AM

BTW, here it is in beige:Mix and Match Bell-Shaped Beige Medium Lamp Shade - Bed Bath & Beyond

rouquinne 06-30-2013 08:03 AM

that should look fine with the room you described, but only you know if it would be too dark for you.

i am *such* a BIG believer in DIY!!!!

I like white with beige, taupe etc. It's a nice pop of (non) color.

curlypearl 06-30-2013 10:10 AM

Although ordinarily I like beige, a creamy white, (ivory) lampshade would be the perfect choice, in my opinion. Is there some other lampshade that comes in that color that you could buy? Is the only choice between pure white and beige?

If not, I would suggest going with the white one. Although ordinarily, beige would coordinate more closely with the colors of your wall and furniture, I think you should get the color you like and are accustomed to.

If you don't like the beige now, you will never like it. Also, the white one may let more light through and I think TNB has a good point. The white one will brighten the room.

Thanks CP---do you think white will look funny with this earthyish bronze lamp??Swing Arm Floor Lamp - Brass (59.5") : Target

Here is a similar lamp with a beige lamp shade:
3-Way Thick Base Floor Lamp - Antique Bronze : Target

It's not so much that I do not like beige as I never had a beige lamp shade before so it would take some getting used to.

curlypearl 06-30-2013 10:57 AM

Hi Curlswirl, Isn't it showing with a white shade in the picture you sent me? I don't think it would look funny at all.

I love the floor lamps you are looking at! I have been looking at lamps a lot since I am planning to buy some new ones (one of mine is broken and I just may replace another) and from what I have read, the main point to look for in the lamp shade is that the style and size go well with the floor lamp and the rest of your decor. Especially the size - if you get a lampshade that is too big or too small it definitely looks off.

Do you have plenty of light in the room to start? A beige shade may not let through as much light as a white shade. It may be helpful to access Better Homes and Gardens or another website and look at pictures of floor lamps in living rooms to help you figure out your taste.
