Eye Surgery for DS

Hey Everyone, Chas will be having eye surgery this Friday. Please be thinking about us. We knew this day was coming it just happening a little sooner than planned. The doctor thinks this will help him tremendously. He will be having Strabismus surgery. They will be doing one muscle on the right eye and two muscles on the left eye. This will hopefully correct the turning in of the left eye and the left eye riding a little high.

The surgery is very common and we love our doctor but it still makes my stomach turn just thinking them messing with my son's eyes and just the thought of putting him to sleep.

It's amazing how different you feel when it's your kiddo. Both DH and I are nervous. Hopefully I can be calm on Friday so that Chas doesn't sense our nervousness and get more upset than he needs too.

I'll definitely be thinking of Chas on Friday, and especially of you.

Oh yeah, it's really tough when you see them put under.

But you all will get through this. I will be thinking of you guys on Friday.
You've got it! Poor Chas, but thankfully, he won't remember this. I'm sure this is much harder on you than him. (((HUGS)))

Best wishes for Chas!! It's too bad your family has to go through this, but as your doctor said, it will help him.
You'll definitely be in my thoughts for a safe, uneventful, and successful surgery! {{HUGS}} to you too - Zora is scheduled for adenoid/tonsil surgery in a couple weeks and even though it's a very routine procedure, I am freaking out!

Good luck. Hope everything is smooth sailing.
Good luck tomorrow! I'll keep li'l Chas in my thoughts
Thanks Everyone. We just found out we are scheduled to be at the surgery center at 6:00 in the morning. I'm guessing he will go into surgery somewhere between 7:00 and 7:30. I'm just a bundle of nerves but trying to remain calm. Hopefully one of us will sleep tonight.

I'll post as soon as I can. Might be alittle while since I will probably have a cranky little one. When he is that way...he only wants mommy. I plan on sitting on the couch tomorrow and watching movies with him in my lap while he sleeps it off. That is my hope at least.

He is NPO at midnight. Should I wake him up at 11:00 and give him a bottle or keep him up later and give him a bottle. Part of me thinks he needs to go to bed on time and get some sleep. I don't want him to go from 8:00 to whenever he gets out of surgery wanting food or something to drink.

Sorry I missed this but I am sending up a little prayer now that all went well.
Keep us posted!
Just seeing this now. Lots of good thoughts for you guys.

Hope surgery went well. If it helps, I have this condition, only back when I was a child they would make you wear glasses first to try and strengthen the eye muscles, then surgery. I was lucky enough that it worked for me, wore glasses from the age of 4 to 12. My left eye will still go up and in when I get really tired, but other than that I'm good. I'm sure the surgery has been improved tons since I was a kid (almost 40). Gotta say my baby & toddler pictures are cute even if I am crossed eyed. I'm sure your son is too. *hugs*

Hey Everyone,

Thank you so much for your prayers and thoughts for us. The surgery went great. His muscles were very tight so it was a good thing for us to go ahead and do this surgery. The only little problem was getting his oxygen levels back up after surgery. I think it was because he was snuggled up next me and just sleeping...we ended up having to strip him to get him good and awake. We got home around 10:30 in the morning and he came alive around 2:00 in the afternoon on Friday and played for a couple of hours before he went back to sleep. This was good because she said some kiddos don't even open their eyes. His eyes look like they have big blood clots but that is normal and his left eye has a shiner.

It's been a rough couple of days just trying to stay with him every minute. We have to keep him from rubbing his eyes for 48 hours so he wouldn't break any stitches. The only other hard part has been trying to get the eye drops in. Other than that he played all day yesterday and has been a pretty good trooper. I'm hoping today his appetite goes back to normal and I can start to ween him off the tylenol.

Thanks again and I'll keep you updated on our progress.
Thanks for the update. Glad the surgury went well, and continued thoughts about a speedy recovery.

I'm glad to hear that things went well and hope he continues to improve!
