Body Butter

I am African-American with a medium brown complexion. Cocoa butter is a well-known old-fashioned part of AA women's skin care regime. I have concocted a recipe for a body butter (lotion) that uses both cocoa and shea (recent African import into the AA beauty market). Women of other skin-types and ethnicities might find this useful as well. The only people I know who have used this are my AA family and I.

* Double boiler: My make-shift double boiler is a glass bowl floating in a pot of shallow boiling water.
* Heat-safe Container with lid: make sure the mouth is wide enough to scoop the butter out of. You can use anything...a recycled beauty product jar, margarine tub, small tupperware, etc. Sterilize by washing with soap and water, rinse with water, then rinse with rubbing alcohol and dry with clean tissue.

In the double boiler melt...

* 1/4 cup pure unrefined shea butter
* 1/4 cup cocoa butter (may have to be cut up first)
* a pinch of beeswax beads

Once melted, remove from heat and stir in

* 1 tablespoon almond oil
* 1 tabelspoon avocado oil
* 2 tabelspoons jojoba oil
* 15-30 drops of essential oil of your choice (optional)

Pour (while hot) into sterilized container. Solidify in the freezer. (allowing it to cool too slowly results in annoying grainy clumps)

The butter stays solid at room temperature. To use, just scoop some up with your fingers, melt it by rubbing it in the palms of your hands and apply to skin. Sheer Heaven! Say "You're welcome" to happy skin.

The cocoa butter smell stays in the final product, so choose your essential oil scents wisely. Compatable fragrances are the "nutty" kind, like bitter almond. Stay away from the flowery ones for this particular recipe.

Ingredient Substitutions: You can use mango butter instead of shea. If you omit the cocoa butter, be sure to add an extra pinch of beeswax. You can substitute any of the liquid oils with other carrier oils such as olive or coconut.

Shopping: I get my beeswax and jojoba from Rainbow Meadow (online). They also have all the butters and oils. I prefer to get my unrefined shea butter from Yendor Drums. My local organic/whole foods store carries the oils I use.

I make a similar body butter using half cocoa butter and half virgin coconut oil. Smells good enough to eat! Chocolate Coconut Dream.
