Cheating on your Stylist

Hi everyone! This is actually my first post even though I've been lurking on the boards and gleaning advice for over a year.

After a long search, I found a good curly stylist where I live, in Cincinnati. I found her through asking a couple of coworkers at different jobs who cuts their curls, and both led me to my current stylist. I've been to her once and she got it more right than any other stylist I've seen (you guys know what I mean).

HOWEVER, she cut my curls wet, which would be fine except that my left side curls tighter than the right. Now as it's growing out, the difference in length is pretty obvious. When I told her about my lopsided shrinkage, she said "I've never seen that before." Not a good sign. Nonetheless, I made an appointment at the end of the month for my 3-month mark.

So in about a month I'm going to NYC to visit a friend and I scheduled an appointment at Devachan. It's twice the price of what I pay here in Cincinnati, but it's the mecca for curly hair, right? I read reviews of the girl who would be cutting my hair in NYC and they were all great.

Here's the real question: do I take the expensive appointment at Devachan, knowing that I won't be able to see them consistently, but hoping they wow me with the results? Then I'd be returning to my current stylist in another 3 months' time...

Do I settle for my current stylist, knowing that it might not be what I want?

For your reference, price for a cut and a very much painless brow wax with tip here is about $80, and at Devachan just a cut with tip will be about $130.

I say go to Devachan! I would if I was in NYC! And when you get back search for another stylist or see if she will cut your hair dry. Our hair has to be cut just could also try cutting your hair yourself. The curl girl handbook has a while chapter on that.

Good luck!

Not a chance I would miss the Devachan cut opportunity!!
remember, with all advice or suggestions for your hair, YMMV!!
My hair:
2b wavy, medium texture, low porosity, med-high density. Protein finicky.
My routine:
Cleansing: DCNP, every 4-5 days (occasionally use CJ cleansers).
RO: CJSC, occasionally use JCDC
Gel: KCCC, CJCIAB for 2nd day hair (sometimes third)

Heat is my friend: warm water rinses, steam caps, and diffuse dry. I love CLU cloths and my Denman.
I would go to Devachan. Don't go back to the stylist you've only seen once. Go on the deva website and find a stylist in your area that has taken there class. Then come back on here and read any reviews this person has so you can make an informed decision. The talk with the stylist you have seen most recently is definitely a red flag and makes me think you would be better off somewhere else.
Just my opinion.

I just did this. I live in Seattle and actually love my stylist. She does a good job with my cuts (wet) and is a genius with my color. However, on Friday I went to Devachan in NYC and had my hair cut by Nevila. I was ready for a change and she did a fabulous job. I couldn't be happier. And she's less expensive than my stylist here.

My son lives in NYC, so I'm hoping to get back a few times a year to have her cut it, but if the timing isn't right I'm hopeful that my stylist here can replicate the look

Go for it....I don't think you'll be disappointed!
