Hair has been reduced in volume due to matting/tangling?

Hi everyone, this is my first post ever on this website!

Recently I went through a bit of a rough patch in life, and I let my hair care routine slide. My hair became tangled, matted, and just plain ugly! There were horrendous clumps and mattes at the back of my head particularly. Well, with a bit of patience and lots and LOTS of conditioner I finally managed to work my way through the knots and mattes- but now I have a slight issue. I have lost a LOT of hair due to the intensive brushing and combing and de-tangling. I used to have so much hair, literally double the amount I have now! How can I re-grow the hair I lost? I have heard of using castor/almond/coconut oil, but does this actually work? Does anyone else have any other advice for me? Please help!

P.S. I have type 2b hair, and I'm 17 going on 18 if that makes any difference

Welcome! Research supports massage to aid hair growth in one form of alopecia, no research supporting any specific oils AFAIK. Also research supporting regular physical activity - get your 10,000 steps every day - perhaps because both massage and being active boosts the circulation.

Also eat a balanced nutrient dense wholefood diet including all the food groups/ nutrients, don't forget foods like oily fish which are rich in protein, essential fatty acids, vitamin D and many other vitamins/ minerals. No supplements make up for a poor or imbalanced diet, but good nutrition and regular physical activity are scientifically proven to help us handle stressful or depressing life events.

Probably best to have a good trim, anything that has been matted and detangled will be damaged and at risk of breaking or splitting so may affect healthy growth in the rest of the hair. If you have the funds you might consider a curly specialist haircut to boost your confidence.

I have always fought with my hair when it reaches a certain length. I can brush is several times each day and it will still get tangled and matted up. One thing I started doing is conditioning my hair and rolling it up in curlers while I sleep. The massaging helps too, as mentioned in the other post. You might also want to eat avocado, or put some on your hair.
