Hair loss nightmare!
Can someone please help me! I did something stupid and I don't know what to do.
Two months ago I got my hair dyed dark at a salon, then I tried to lighten it on my own twice, then went back to the salon to fix what I did. All this was in a very short time span. When I left the salon the last time I noticed I lost maybe 40% of my hair! Then since then I keep losing more and more. Now it's been two months and the hair loss slowed down but now I probably lost 60% of my hair and I haven't seen any regrowth!
So my question is how long will it take to start to see regrowth and will it come back? I'm afraid i damaged my follicles and it will never grow back. In the last two months the rest of my hair has grown just not the bald spots.. Please someone give me some good new and tell me just to be patient it will grow back!

We can't tell you anything either way as we can't examine your head.

Normally when people dye and/or bleach their hair if it breaks of at the root it grows back within a few weeks.

If yours isn't growing back and you have bald spots then you need a dermatologist or trichologist to examine your head.

Sorry to read this.

What has your family doctor or dermatologist said? Did you have a reaction to any of the skin patch tests or full head dyes?

Had you been experiencing life stress a couple months prior to the dyings? Is your diet nutritionally balanced and largely wholefood?

Key things you can do for yourself is reduce your anxiety levels (stress management techniques, daily physically activity) AND makeover your diet to be as anti inflammatory and nutrient dense as possible. This helps your skin barrier calm and heal after the chemical assault, calms any inappropriate immune response, reduces the physical effects of stress.

Many people miss out on nutrients like long chain omega-3s, bio available vitamin D, magnesium, haem iron and/ or eat way too many processed or inflammatory foods. No a multi vitamin/ mineral or hair supplement does not substitute for good diet, and can even worsen imbalances.

It's also worth being generally kind to your scalp with super gentle products that respect the skin's barrier function and have healing or anti inflammatory properties. If you have NO symptoms of irritation you might massage regularly. However do not do this if you have itching, dryness, tenderness or any other symptom (however mild) unless advised to do so by a doctor.

Well I have started taking all the vitamins you have mentioned, but I have also had lots of stress lately and I do have a poor diet, so maybe that is the cause.
My doctor said stress but I'm going to go to a dermatologist soon.
So do you think it will grow back if I change my life style? Have you heard of people's hair not growing back after something like this? When I got my hair done the last time, the following day is when I started feeling itching and tingling. Does that mean I had a reaction? If each dye was from different salons can different dyes react to each other?

Without a diagnosis its impossible to do more than guess on grow back.

All I do know is a healthy lifestyle puts your body into the best state to permit or encourage regrowth. Don't underestimate the effect lifestyle habits have on your physical health and mental wellbeing: when I started my last degree I was blown away by the published research.

Be aware that stress is more than life events - the body is out into a state of stress by smoking, poor diet, being very over or underweight, disturbed sleep patterns and so on. One affects another: caffeine, alcohol and smoking all cause less restful/ quality of sleep even if not less quantity of sleep.

Be very careful supplementing: micronutrients are absorbed and utilised synergistically and in opposition, you can WORSEN imbalances by randomly supplementing individually or in small groups. If a micronutrient is prescribed by a doctor in response to a blood test result absolutely take that.

If you ever dye your hair again discuss the itching and tingling with the stylist and *insist* on a skin patch test. If they aren't interested go elsewhere. It may have been nothing but some allergic reactions (PPD and related compounds) are potentially life threatening and can occur suddenly.

If hair comes out without the bulb that is usually breakage not shedding.

The problem may have also been when you tried to re-dye your hair. How long did you wait before dyeing it lighter?

I dyed it dark then used colorfix from Sally's to try to remove the color, I did it within a week of going dark. It didn't work very well just lightened the roots so then went to the salon to fix the orangish roots. That when it started to fall out.

When you've seen the dermatologist post back. People search these threads and it helps them not panic if they see others have been in the same situation.

I'm really sorry this happened to you. Maybe you should let your follicles relax a little. Don't put anymore chemicals to your hair and let it rest for a while. If it worries you too much have it check so you you'll know exactly the reason why it happened and what products to use to get back your hair into growing again.

I hope your hair/scalp is doing better, but just in case it's not, I would like to give my opinion. It seems to me that you "shocked" your follicles into a resting phase by all the chemicals you put on your scalp, also, being under stress while eating poorly as you mentioned cannot help, a lot of key nutrients are lost during stress and you cannot expect to replace them with a poor diet, so in order to keep you alive your body is sacrificing the needs of your hair.

So, the first thing I would do if I were you is to improve my diet.
Next, I'd see if there are ways to reduce the stress levels, and if not, at least learn ways to cope with it, such as finding ways to laugh every day, practicing progressive relaxation (you can do a search on Youtube for videos that show you how to do it) or self-hypnosis.

Lastly, don't panic. Hair follicles can lie dormant for about a year, but there have even been cases of people who'd gone way longer than that who grew back their hair when they improved their nutrition so as to obtain all the key nutrients for good general health. There's lots of books out there you could read, or articles or even videos to watch online to learn if you're not sure what to do, just make Google your best friend and search, search, search...
