Big Chop (Transition for 3 Months) vs. Long Term Transition re: Scab Hair

tl;dr Is scab hair real? Will it take away from my hair length if I BC after only 3 months?Hello! I recently decided to go natural (my last relaxer was on May 25 of this year). I'm debating between doing a big chop at the end of three months (so at the end of August) and transitioning over a longer period of time. A major concern that I have with transitioning long term, however, is that I will be returning to college in rural Massachusetts with *very* few accessible black hairstylists, the only resources being the internet and a few natural friends. I also will not have a ton of time, seeing as I will be taking on a substantial and intensive research project that spans the entire school year. I'm leaning towards doing the BC in late August so I'll have much more time to toy around with my hair and products before school starts. My major concern with BC'ing, though, is the much talked-about "scab hair." After three months, is scab hair likely to pose such a problem that I'll have to cut even more hair than previously thought? How common is scab hair? My mother has permed my hair since I was around 7 years old, so I don't even know what my natural texture is like. Right now I've got a lot of wavy growth coming in that is clearly not the relaxed texture; how sure can I be that this is "natural texture"?Apologies for the long question/explanation--I'm new here...
