What to expect afte heat damage (big/little) chop

So I'm 15 and I really am wanting to cut off my heat damage. My hair is at my chest when straight. I should really start of by staying how against my mother is about me cutting my hair, as she doesn't believe I have heat damage (but those straight ends would suggest otherwise). For as long as I remember I've flat ironned my hair, but I've never used any chemicals. I really just want to go fully natural and stop hiding behind flexi-rods and other rollers to hide the damage. But also I know that taking this step is going to to take a lot of confidence and patience. What is your advice for helping me get my mom on board? What should I expect? How much should I get cut?
