Why does my hair get shorter whenever I wear it curly?

When I wear my hair curly, it tends to get matted and I have to detangle more than what is needed. And when I'm ready to straighten my hair, it's not as long as it used to be. My hair used to be past at my butt and now it's at my mid back. How can I maintain my curly hair without it causing my hair to get shorter?

It is most likely due to breakage caused by dryness. Try being more deliberate about keeping it moisturized. The natural oils from your scalp can't travel down the shaft of curly hair as easily as it can on straight hair. Also make sure you cut any current damage off so it won't continue to split.
