How can I take care of my hair as a boy?
I am a 13 year old boy and I have been growing my hair since the middle of 6th grade. The hair style I desired was a high top fade which is basicly the back and sides of your hair cut and you let the top grow out into the who of a box. At that time I knew nothing about hair and I did something I regret to this day....... a S curl texturizer
Lol @ "......a S curl texturizer". Well, what exactly do you want to fix? If you want the S Curl gone, you'd need to either grow your hair out (transition), or cut it off and start over (big chop). The steps you may need to take care of your hair depend on what exactly you want to do with it next :).
Actually love, you can do exactly what women/ girls that are natural are doing to keep their hair growing. You can use the same exact products too. Try the LOC method on your hair. You can google that but it means: L- leave in conditioner/ O - Oil/ C - Cream or cream styler. You can also try the L.O.C.O method. That's kind of like the L.O.C method but one step is switched and you repeat one step twice. L.O.C.O - Leave-in conditioner (make sure water is the first ingredient on the back), Oil - a lighter or penetrating oil like Coconut oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil), Cream - A Heavy Cream, and O - Oil, but this time a heavier oil that will seal and protect the moisture in your hair like castor oil, or olive oil right from your kitchen. Or the L.C.O which is simply the Cream before the oil and after the leave in conditioner. These help to moisturize your hair and KEEP it moisturized. Moisture and protein are KEYS to length retention (that just means long hair lol). These help make sure your hair isnt dry making it break off. You can try to cowash your hair once a week or every week and a half. Cowashing is just using a conditioner and water to clean your hair instead of shampoo. If you feel like cowashing is not getting your hair clean, you can wash with shampoo first instead of just using conditioner. Just make sure you use one that is sulfate free and isnt too drying. If you don't want to try to go out and buy a gentle shampoo with no sulfates in it, you can mix together half a cup of shampoo already in your bathroom and half a cup of conditioner and use that to wash your hair. You can use a denmin brush, widetooth comb, or your fingers to get the tangles out of your hair during your conditioning process.Try to deep condition your hair. When you deep condition your hair try to use heat. You know how most people keep their grocery bags in their kitchen lol, you can take one of those and put it right on your hair after you apply your deep conditioner. Or you can get some plastic caps for $1 from the dollar store or from walmart. *A regular conditioner you use to condition and rinse out or cowash with IS NOT THE SAME AS A DEEP CONDITIONER.* They have different ingredients and will not give you the same moisture or results.Last but not least, protect your hair not just with the stuff you put in it but with your process. Dont be too rough on it, try sleeping on a satin or silk pillow case so your hair doesnt get dry very easily and break off. If you can't get a pillow case see if your mom has a satin bonnet or scarf you can tie your hair with at night. OR you can ask her to buy you one from walmart lol.To sum it up the here's the order you should do it in: 1. Shampoo or Co-wash (whichever one you choose to do)2. Condition3. Deep Condition (either once a week, once every week and a half, or once every 2 weeks - whichever one works for you love. I do it everytime I wash my hair which is once a week or every week and a half, or when my hair is really dry)4. Deep Condition with a plastic bag(Next steps depend on if you do L.O.C, L.O.C.O, or L.C.O. Im going write it as if youre doing L.C.O)5. Leave-in Conditioner6. Cream 7. Oil8. Gel (optional) (this is if youre trying to make your curls pop)9. Serum (optional) (this is if youre trying to make sure the gel doesn't make your hair white OR a frizz serum to make your hair less frizzy. Just depends on what the serum is for but you should apply it last.)Okay, those are the STEPS you should take. Longer hair or length retention takes a good consistent regimen. Just meaning, you should do the same steps constantly to keep your hair healthy and moisturized. A healthy scalp with cause healthy hair to grow. This is all trial and error, so what may work you everyone won't work for your hair growth. You have to find which products will work for your hair, for example: Cantu shea butter repair leave in conditioner works awesome for my hair, but your hair may hate it. Shea Moisture Jamacian Black Castor Oil Deep Conditioner has so many good reviews and everyone loves to use it, but hair absolutely hated it and it doesnt work for me. You will have to see if your hair like's shampooing better than co-washing and how many times you will need to do it a week. Some people can do every two weeks, and some people have to do it once a week (me -_- lol). Point being: Keep in mind that these are nothing but steps or a guide to longer hair. Once you use this to find what works for you, you'll be all set. Here's a list of products you can use.
