Loved my curly hair but trying out CG method - I hate it now!
5 weeks ago, I decided that my hair was breaking too often and had more frizz than I wanted, so to the internet I went. I came across the Curly Girl Method (and way too much other info!). I got a DevaCut, read through the Curly Girl Handbook, and started trying out some products. Now I have a dried out, curl-less mess that I hate.I loved my long, curly hair for at least a decade and didn't really have any issues with it other than some frizz halo. I did put it up in a bun or ponytail most days because I have small children who do not respect my hair. I would describe my long curls as botticelli. I used Aussie Moist shampoo once a week and Aussie Moist conditioner everyday. I used grapeseed oil only for styling and let it air dry. It took about six+ hours to be 100% dry but the canopy and long curls usually dried within 3 hours.I got my hair cut by a Deva specialist on Sept. 24th - it looked okay leaving the salon but it took 75 minutes under the hood diffuser to get 90% dry. We called it good enough and on my way I went. I have been using Kinky Curly Come Clean shampoo once a week or so, Kinky Curly Knot Today as a leave in, and Kinky Curly Curling Custard as a styling product. I used Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque twice and Palmer's Coconut Protein Pack today. My hair is now a blunt chin length (not what I wanted) with tight curls on the back, straight pieces on top of those, and waves that turn straight as they dry on the very top. My hair takes 16+ hours to dry and is typically the crunchy gel look all day, which I really dislike. Metal clips fall flat in my hair, so I've given up on that for now. I am still getting handfuls of hair in the shower - mostly breakage, not shedding. My hair is super dry and frizzy now, even after the protein treatment and masques.Should I just shave it all off and start over? If I switch products, how can I not waste tons of money trying out different things that may not work? I am at such a loss with too much information and not enough guidance.Best I can tell - low porosity, thick hair, quite possibly fine strands instead of coarse
I am so sorry for what feels like not positive changes. The good news is that it's hair and it will grow. But what I think might be happening is that along with your low porosity is either now protein overload or an inherent protein sensitivity. If you aren't familiar with protein sensitivity look it up on here and on Youtube. I would stop using protein treatments for now. The damage that you might have had (but probably not much with your hair routine) has been cut off. Curls need moisture and protein but the latter is highly variable depending on the person. The Kinky Curly Come Clean has c14-16 olefin sulfonate and cocomidopropyl betaine which are both very drying (not sulfates but almost as stripping!) I would try co washing every other day or less and using a gentler no-poo like Shea Moisture Raw Shea Butter. However, the SM Raw Shea masque is one of the most controversial SM products as many people (me included) felt it dried out their hair and caused lots of hair loss in the shower! I returned mine and several other products when I switched to the CG method. I took back products to Walgreens, Target, Sally and Walmart if I tried it once and it was a bad experience. I used the money to re-invest in finding better products for my hair.I would try Tresemme Naturals for your co-wash, it's not expensive. Follow it with airiness out like GVP Conditioning Balm (from Sally $7-big bottle and add grapeseed or olive oil if you need more moisture) and Stick w/ Kinky Curly Knot Today as a leave in/detangler and KCCC can follow as a styler. The Kinky Curly products can sometimes cause your hair to dry more slowly with all the slip they have but hat is usually when they are used with other stylers or post shower products outside of those two. I would definitely suggest keeping a little hair journal notebook. I started doing this and by looking back discovered somethings I would not have put together on my own from memory!Dpn't shave your head. You can figure this out! Best of luck and let us know how your journey goes and if you have more questions! :D
It sounds like your hair and scalp have too much product buildup. Are you applying products to you hair daily? And are you thoroughly rinsing the conditioner out?
Thank you, KatCurl, for your very thorough opinion! After considering your information, and without going to the store, I have been trying to add moisture and more moisture this week to see if I could get back from possibly overdoing the protein. I will definitely start keeping track of what I'm doing and my hair's response - great idea!AmandaEvolves, I had thought of product build-up too but I feel like I washed my hair thoroughly with the Kinky Curly Come Clean. I also used OGX Coconut Curls shampoo this past Sunday to (hopefully) reboot before I started trying to add moisture this week. I do have to use some product daily if I want to have any hairstyle other than frizzy poof. However, I have noticed that I can just wet my hair and re-activate the Curling Custard to a large degree on a day that I don't shower and co-wash. So if that works well for what I want (usually), then no, I don't add anything else that day.
