How to prevent my hair from breakage?

Hello,      I am very confused and frustrated with my hair, but I refuse to perm it. For starters I have type 4 hair. I get very confused when it comes to protective styling. Most of the naturals I know mask their natural hair under extensions and weaves, and I on the other hand want to stay away from that because it is very tight and can lead to breakage. I also refuse to go to a salon to get my hair done because I would sit in a chair for hours, pay money to get my hair done, and a couple of weeks later I will realize the protective style caused breakage to my edges and my scalp will feel painful!! So far I have been twisting my hair myself and after 2 weeks I wear a twist out. Yes, I do understand there are other natural braided hairstyles that can be done, but hairstylists always pull very tight on my hair, even after I tell them to be gentle. I honestly don't know what to do at this point, I have seen a lot of youtubers who have long natural hair and don't wear weave, extensions, or natural braided hairstyles, but most of the hairstyles they DO do consists of heat, which i want to avoid.Thanks.

It sounds like you're on the right track. Just be patient. Don't forget to cleanse, deep condition, and moisturize regularly. Don't forget to trim your ends when necessary. Be gentle when you detangle.
Moisture is the number one key to combat breakage. Keep your ends mosturized as much as possible, dry ends lead to breakage. Try not to wear your hair in its natural state to often because that leads to tangles and knots(split ends) that will break off if not treated.
