My hair turned grey from dying it, will this happen if I continue to dye it?

Hello,I dyed my hair at home (trying to save money) trying to lighten my hair to a brighter blond. (I used The One n Only permanent hair color with a 20 developer)  My hair has never been really dark, just a little light brown underneath my hair.  I have golden blond highlights, but for the most part my hair is a very light brownish-blondish color.  If that makes sense to anyone.  However, after dying it, I was left with a brassy/orange-ish color.  Although my hair seemed lighter in the areas that used to be more brown, I was not happy with the color, so I decided to use a lighter shade about a week later.  The second time around didn't really do anything to my hair except turn my highlights grey.  In hindsight maybe I should have waited a little longer between coloring.  Is that why my hair turned grey?  Too much on my hair in a short period?  I'm still yearning for my blond hair, but I'm reluctant to do anything for another couple weeks. (The second coloring process was a week ago).  I don't want to damage my hair, but I'm at a loss here.  I can't afford to go to the salon, so I'm wondering...will this eventually pass so I'll be able to try again?  Or am I doomed forever with highlights that turn grey when you try to save money by coloring at home? Thanks.
