Can high density effect curl definition? Saving flat hair!

A few years ago I had an infection on my head and 1/4 of my hair fell out. I have very dense fine hair so I essentially did a comb over, no one noticed & I had the best curls of my life! I've been trying to recreate this and I think reducing my hair density is the key. Asking the stylist to go at it with a razor helps a lot, but they look horrified and are extremely reluctant to do so. Am I wrong here or is reducing density actually good for my type of hair? It recently went flat (I was dying it with harsh colors) & I'm trying anything I can to get my curl back. I attached pictures. The long hair is the combover.
