How do I know if my hair needs/likes/dislikes protein?

I have seen a lot of ladies on YouTube say their hair either loves protein or hates it.  I'm new to the curly girl method and I have no clue what products are heavy or light in protein or if my hair does or doesn't need/like it.  How do I find out?  I feel like if I have a good or bad hair day that I'm clueless as to which ingredients in my products are responsible for the effect.
