Why are my curls back?

I used to have my hair colored at a salon with Global Keratin color system (NOT to be confused with keratin straightening treatment.) My stylist would mix one part red/auburn color with two parts Blonde no. 8. This had a DRAMATIC loosening affect on my curls, almost transforming them into mere waves. I loved it. Since then, I have had a stylist friend color my hair at home with only a dark blonde professional grade color, seeing as how this is my natural color and the few natural red strands that I have are so stubborn that they resist dye and red dye fades after a few washes, anyway. Well, my curls are back in full force and I can not loosen them to the desired wavy-like consistency that I experienced with salon coloring. Does this have something to do with red hair color? Should I implement it back into my color mixture to achieve this desired look? What else could I do to loosen my curl pattern? I certainly don't want to have it chemically straightened. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! :)
