Should I use a flat iron for special occasions or is it too damaging?

Hello! I have type 3A, thin, fine hair that falls out and breaks somewhat easily. I have prom coming up in a month and would love to have a fancy up-do. The problem is that I'd have to flat iron my hair in order for the hair stylist to do my hair in an up-do. I haven't straightened my hair in a long time; I'm worried that it would damage my hair and ruin my curls that I've been recently trying to take better care of. Also, I'm involved in theater, and I may have to flat iron my hair for 4 performance nights in a row ( I think I'm a bit more concerned about this than the prom up-do). I'm wondering if I should use a flat iron for just those occasions. If anyone has any tips that they would like to share, I'd be really grateful! Thank you!

I guess you can use flat irons ocassionally like on special occasions but i wouldn't do it everyday or else you would get heat damage.

First of all, why would the stylist "have" to flat iron your hair to do an up-do for prom? I'd consult another stylist because to me that just seems to indicate your stylist doesn't have much experience with doing up-do's on naturally curly hair. That being said, I think as long as you make sure to take extra good care of your hair in the weeks prior to your performance (like do more deep conditioning treatments than usual, for example), use a heat protectant every time you use the flat iron, and deep condition after, it shouldn't do much to your hair. I have 3b hair and I straightened mine for my halloween costume and I did all of the above and didn't notice much difference with my hair. Good luck!!
ONce in a while is ok for a change, but I would explore curly options first if u can.
