Hair is naturally curly on the top of my head but on the side it's not whatsoever. Any fixes?

I have 4a hair. My hair has always been naturally curly. For years I've straightened my hair but why would the top still be curly but not the sides?

The top may be thicker or more resilient than the sides. If the sides are fine, it's likely that they took on more damage than the top or if you passed over it more often than you would the top. You can try protein treatments and deep conditioning, but usually with heat damage severe enough to make a 4a straight, it seems like the only solution may be a transition or big chop.
