Heather did an awesome job! I came in with very damaged hair and left with gorgeous curls! I have been having hair loss problems as well and she gave me many suggestions and tips to help with hair growth that I cant wait to try! Definitely recommend this place!

I first came to this salon a couple of years ago and had Keith as a hair stylist. It was my first DevaCurl experience and it was wonderful, he cut my hair dry and cut it curl by curl, never combing out my hair and shaping it beautifully. I only had a chance to go to him two times before he left Personal Expressions, and they were the best haircuts I'd ever had. They grew out wonderfully and my hair FINALLY had a nice haircut after years of having terrible haircuts because no one knows how to handle my curly hair! Recently, I went to Heather two times. Both times, she combed my hair out (dry) and pulled it straight to cut it which was not what I remember being told was the Deva cut. I was under the impression given to me by the first stylist that introduced my to DevaCurl and by the DevaCurl books I read that the deva cut is when each curl is treated and cut individually, not ever combed out straight (because why would you comb the hair straight to cut it if it's not straight?). Basically, curly hair should almost be treated like a shrubbery, carefully sculpted into the right shape. Maybe I should have said something or asked if she was doing the Devacut correctly, but I don't really know if it would be a good idea to ask someone with scissors to your hair if they are doing their job correctly. I will not be going back here again. Both times I went, I asked for a trim and both times she ended up cutting about 4 or 5 inches too much off because she PULLED IT STRAIGHT TO CUT IT. My hair cut this last time has turned out to be another bad one in my long line of bad curly cuts. She cut off way too much, and my hair will not lay nicely on itself AT ALL. It just gets the weird poof triangle effect going, whereas Keith cut it so that each curl layed extremely nicely. Also, this last time I was there another customer came in to scold the stylist for pulling her hair straight to cut it and messing up her hair and taking off months and months of hard earned hair growth (it takes even longer for us curlies to grow out our hair! Those inches are precious!). So it seems like this is the way they cut curly hair here now. Do not go here for a curly cut. I'm going to assume that the other stylist/owner does the same kind of cut, because she watched Heather cut mine both times and didn't say a word. They seem like they would be great for straight hair cuts. Basically, I miss Keith. Where are you Keith!!?!?

For the first time in a very long time I have finally gotten a hair cut I don't hate. Usually after I leave a salon the stylist has cut off far too much and leaves me with a mini-fro. Diane took the time to look at my hair and tell me what I can and cannot do with it. She also took the time to show me how to properly put products in my hair. What a difference this has made. My hair isn't 4' wide anymore. It actually looks good!! No more Roseanne Rosanadanna for me!! Thanks, Diane.

Arrived at Personal Expressions salon NERVOUS!  Had not had so much as a trim in about three years.  I am old enough to have more bad haircuts under my belt that the idea of trying something new keeps me out of the chair but I am sooooo happy with the results!  Heather was fabulous.  She went over the entire process with me from cut to, products to the why's and how's.  I knew just a few minutes in that she knew what she was doing.  The end result was great.  No drastic changes (I am saving that for next time) just great shape, lots of soft bouncy curls and all the information I need to do-it-myself at home.  The salon is clean and modern and both Heather and Diane are friendly and professional.  I highly recommend Heather and Personal Expressions.

Heather was my stylist, and I couldn't have better things to say about her. When I came to the salon, I had something that was like a mullet with a Devachan cut on the top (difficult to explain, I know) and she was able to salvage my hair into a very cute shoulder-length cut! After seeing her for the cut, I came back for a color correction and she was able to transform my many shades of blonde into a lovely medium blonde with dimension. However, I have to say that her biggest suggestion was to encourage me to go from my saturated blonde of 15 years to my natural color! After a protein infusion and organic coloring, I would have to say my hair is healthier and NOTICEABLY improved. People are complimenting my hair and color all the time! Heather definitely knows what she's doing, and is warm and professional. If you want a great experience, go see her!

I was looking for a new salon that was easily convenient to Philadelphia. I am so lucky to have found this is a quaint, tiny, and unassuming salon in the heart of downtown Haddonfield, twenty minutes from Philadelphia. I have had Deva cuts before, but what makes Diane's work stand out to me and why I would highly recommend her is that she not only did a fabulous job on my hair, but she was super sweet and kind, too. I've had other Deva cuts including a few cuts at the mothership in NYC but with stylists who either over shared or were cold and unfriendly. Diane struck the perfect note of professional, knowledgeable, helpful and honest. I really appreciated when she gently let me know why one or two of my ideas (bangs, for instance) wouldn't work with my hair. I genuinely appreciated her feedback, so I didn't end up with a crazy look. She was skillful with those shears! I looked like a million bucks when I got out of there and I have felt light, happy, and floaty with my new look. She gave me exactly what I wanted playful, flirty, easy to care AND professional for work. I love it! I will be back and this is my new go-to salon.

My experience at Personal Expressions was fantastic. Diane gave me great info on how to take care of my hair and the best products to use. I was already use to the products because I only use Deva Girl and I love them. I had some heat damage left over from years of getting Dominican Blowouts and she snipped off only what was necessary. She also gave me a temporary color that came out great. She didn't shove products down my throat, which was something I was worried about. Needless to say, I made an appt. to return in 2 weeks for a protein treatment. I'm so happy to find a salon close to home!!! :)

Hey Curlies!!!! After years of misfortune with finding a good hair stylist the gods have blessed my curls with Diane. She is an awsome chick. Ok, lets get down to business. The salon is located in a cute little town with street level parking. My appoinment was at 4:00 but my wonderful boyfriend who was kind enough to treat me to the cut was a half an hour late ( i bet if we were going to a baseball game we'd be a hr early lol) I called the salon and diane was kind enough to work with me and get me in at 5:45 which was AWESOME!!! no salon i have ever been to was kind enough to take me the same day and work with me. Entering the salon everyone was friendly and asked me if i'd like coffe tea or water which is very nice. Ladies don't be detoured by the apperance. I know in the curly kinky coiled community we can be wearie of people who don't have similar textured hair doing our hair, but these stylist know their stuff! During the consultation diane really examined my hair to determine what was needed and we began. She trimmed and gave me curls tips at the same time which is a plus. after showing me how to bettr wash and condtioned my curls she sat me in the dryer to dry and when i was done she diffused and trimmed again is which excellent because she really got those few hiding straight pieces and what not. She's very knowledgeable and sweet. They all are! If you are looking to get the most out of your curls and have a healthy head of hair this is the place to go!!! I WILL FOREVER GO TO PERSONAL EXPRESSIONS!!!!

Diane is a warm and lovely person who spent a very long time with me, educating me on all of the "curly girl" tips and tricks. After my devacut, I have never had so many good hair days in a row. My waves hang nicer and look neater. Since I am not truly curly (I am wavy) not all of the techniques I learned work for me... but most of them do and I appreciated the education- because I now do things to my hair I wouldn't have thought of before! I can't imagine I won't return for a trim as my hair has never behaved so well. Cozy little salon in the heart of Haddonfield too.

WOW ! I have found my new BFF. I stumbled across this salon while in Haddonfield during a girls night out. I stopped in after seeing their wonderfully decorated store windows and was greeted by Rebbekah ,who is a doll ! She was able to answer all of my curly hair questions with expertise and a smile. I met Mary Anne that night, who was with a client, but took time out for me to introduce herself and welcome me in. I had to set up an appointment with Mary Anne and Rebbekah was happy to do that. I was back in a week to have my consultation and first Deva cut. Mary Anne spent the first half hour educating me on the products and procedures and even asked me what were my expectations were. How about that for customer service ! During that time the staff was so attentive to my needs, asking me if I needed coffee, water or something to read. Needless to say Mary Anne 's hair cut left me speechless. She delivered everything she promised, plus ! I will be back again and again so pass the word along all you curly girls, Personal Expressions is the place to go for curly girls who have been left out in the dark all these years !

Technically this salon is one of the best I've ever been to. They take their time, explain everything quite well and send you home armed with the product you need and the expertise to use it. My hair has looked great since I started seeing them about 8 months ago. However, I will not return to this salon....ever. I have no problem offering services a la carte. What I do have a problem with is not disclosing that up front. The first visit they will do the complete Deva Curl procedure, teaching you how to handle your hair. Second visit they ask if you'd like to do it again, and you think great! Until you go to pay and you realize that now there is an additional fee tacked on to your color fee. All during the winter Mary Ann offered to have me sit under the dryer to take some of the moisture out of my hair before going home. Yesterday I requested a few minutes under the dryer so it wasn't dripping down my back on the drive home. Apparently I exceeded a 5 minute unspoken rule and was yet again charged for the full Deva Curl under the dryer procedure for 10 minutes of dryer time. I don't mind paying for procedures, what I do mind is not being informed ahead of time and being able to make my own decision. If you feel that this type of business practice is acceptable to you, then I highly recommend this salon. If you feel that you'd rather be treated with respect, then I would say find another salon.

I found out about this salon by the many positive reviews on this website and decided to check it out. I'm very glad I did. I had my appointment with Keith last week, which was scheduled for two hours. I was impressed that was even offered. Upon arrival, he spent a lot of time talking to me about products and daily styling routine, which I never had. I was also happy with the hair cut. I have made a dramatic change to my daily routine and have used the products suggested. I have seen results and heard many compliments. I used to wear my hair in a ponytail daily, because I had no idea what to do. I am able wear my hair half down with minimal frizz at the end of the day! Also, I would suggest a book that I had a chance to look at while at the salon called "Curly Girl The Handbook" by Lorraine Massey. I ended up ordering it the day of my appointment. It's very informative.

I had decided to schedule an appointment with MaryAnn for a color/cut, and she was very accomodating to my crazy schedule. It was very easy to get to their location, and parking was easy as well. MaryAnn checked out my hair, and did a very thorough analysis before we began. While I was waiting for my color to finish, she gave me some naturally curly reading materials to browse through, so I could read up on some tips and tricks. The color came out gorgeous!! Maryann and her assistant walked me through the methods they were using step by step, so I would know how to care for my hair at home moving forward. It was extremely informative, and after they had set my hair and dried it, it was absolutely amazing! We could not actually cut the hair much, as I was in the process of growing out a disastrous haircut from a different salon. However using the new techniques that I had learned (combined with the beautiful color) I feel like I have a whole new head of hair:) In addition to the great service and results, the atmosphere in the salon was very laid back and relaxed. It was fun conversating with MaryAnn - she has some funny stories!! I ended up purchasing a few products to take home with me, but at no point during the visit did I feel pressured or pushed to buy anything. Also, about a week after the visit, I ended up receiving a thank you card in the mail! Very cool. Im so happy to have found MaryAnn and plan to keep going back to let her work some more magic:)

Excellence experience all around!!! I have never had a Deva cut, and after doing some research I decided to call Personal Expressions to setup a cut/color appointment. Mary Ann was very accomodating to my crazy schedule. I ended up going in for a Friday evening appointment. Upon arrival, Mary Ann checked out my hair, and we talked about the struggles I was having with styling. She gave me TONS of info on how to style/manage/wash/care for my hair. At no point, did I feel like products were being pushed on me, or pressured to buy anything. It was simply informational/tips/tricks, etc. While I was waiting for my organic hair color to finish, Mary Ann even gave me curly girl reading materials to browse through. The color came out unbelievably nice. Also it was set/dried in a way that i have NEVER experienced from a salon, I was super impressed. We couldnt really cut it much, due to the terrible cut I had received from a different salon, but once it grows out more I will surely be going back for Mary Ann to help me get it into a better shape. The atmosphere in the salon is really laid back, I spent alot of time laughing and enjoying myself. ALSO - a week of so after the salon visit - I received a personalized thank you card in the mail!! I can honestly say I will definately be going back, and really look forward to bringing my curls to their full potential. I highly recommend this salon, and especially Mary Ann, whether you are naturally curly or not! :)

Mary Ann educated me about the Deva products she sells (which was awesome because I never really put that much thought into what I put on my head) and showed me a cut and style technique that works for both my specific curl type and my face shape. Maybe the Deva method just isn't for my head of hair...I wanted layers in my long, wavy hair, but Mary Ann told me it was "too thin" for such and I'd have to go short (but I wanted to keep my length), and so instead barely trimmed my ends. I felt I didn't even get a haircut...atelast not for what I paid. Fine/thin, long curlies beware? I have reccomended her to my curly friends with thick locks and they like her. Keith explained the deva method and the products and what would work best for me, needless to say I did leave with a few products in tow that hopefully will be the last in my quest of searching for the right hair regimen!! He was very patient with me and answered all my questions , especially regarding adding protein to my hair since I felt that the products I had previously used were causing my hair to become very dry because of protein overload. He also was able to determine my hair type which is corkscrew and my texture is fine even though I was sure I had coarse hair!! the dry cut was pretty interesting to have done but very much better and my new cut looks great instead of just straight down and pouring outwards. The rest of the staff were very friendly and couteous and kept offering coffee, beverages and snacks throughout my entire appointment, which took about 2 hours since it was my initial appointmentI and I was made to feel very welcome in such a great atmosphere:) I didn't feel like just another customer that was being rushed but a valued person who needed help in taking care of my curls. The one thing I do regret is that I forgot to ask for styling tips for my curls instead of just pulling hair back in ponytail which is my usual routine:( I definitely need more styles to work with!! I left a very happy curlie and will definitely be back as well as bring both my daughters who also have very curly and LONG hair. I am sure Keith will be able to work his curl power magic on their curly tresses too:) I also got a glimpse of the owner Maryann taking care of a new curlie girl too and she was very thorough as well as easy to talk to and full of personal experience and knowledge- I am sure her customer left just as pleased as I did:) If your looking for a knowledgable and super friendly deva cut experts, def visit Personal Expressions Salon for great and personalized service!!

As soon as I walked in, he sat me down at his station and told me everything about curly hair and the Deva system. He is so informative and answered every question I had. Unfortunately, I am one of those fools who willingly fronted $500 ($600 if you include tip) to chemically destroy my hair with the Japanese straightener, and now I am living with the damage. It's been about ten months since I received this process, and for the last seven months I have been living with scraggly, unhealthy, and thirsty hair. Before the process, I had very curly hair. I had bouncy curls and thick coils. I hated it, but I guess it took me a relentlessly damaging process to make me miss my old hair. I was fed up with the mess I was left with. (I can't even count on two hands how many people have told me that my hair looks like dreadlocks.) No one I have ever gone to before knows how to work with curls, and since I completely wrecked my curls, I might as well start somewhere. I decided to go to Personal Expressions, and I am ecstatic that I have found someone who knew how to salvage my hair. I walked into the salon with a skanky rat’s nest and walked out with actual curls. I have never gone to a salon where I felt attached to a stylist, and it is so easy to connect with Keith. I was never loyal to a salon because no matter how great I looked when I left, and with recommended product in hand, the next washing (my hair in my own hands) would bring me back to the same nonsense - crazy hair that would defy my attempts to get it under control. Mary Ann was recommended to me by friends who said, 'go to her; she understands curly hair; she will help you'. I have curly bottom, wavy middle and fluffy top hair - yes inconsistent. Mary Ann gave me an education on the quality of my hair. She showed me how to "test" my hair for moisture and strength and showed me how to care for my hair with proper washing and product - also gave a great cut. She showed me how to get really great curls or waves with out the "fluff". I've been going to Mary Ann for a year and a half now. I love my hair. I love Mary Ann!

My hair never looked or felt so good! She took her time doing my cut and explaining how to style, and use curl friendly hair products (she explained which ingredients are bad and good for your curly hair). She carries the Deva line, but never, ever, pushed the products. Keith who also works at the salon was equally gifted with his knowledge and talents of curly hair! They are a great team. They both go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and encourage communication! Mary Ann is very into Organics. She told me about a hair color line that is ammonia free. I have been dying my hair over 20 years now, and hopefully will be for at least another 40 years. All that ammonia cannot be good. Well today I returned for my Organic hair color and highlights. LOVE, LOVE ,LOVE IT! The COLOR & THE CUT! She explained my hair will become curlier and shinier with the organic line. Already I see a shine and bounce I hadn't had in years! Personal Expressions specializes in curly hair and thinning hair! If you are looking for a great, curly cut and, or color, You need to try this salon. You will not be sorry! PROMISE!!

My hair has dimension and looks and FEELS great. I can't wait to go back. :)

I, like most curlies, have been fighting my hair for years. I had finally accepted my hair, but kept going to a salon where they cut my hair wet - and cut it so it looked good when they blew it out straight. Getting my hair cut dry was a revelation! Mary Anne sat and talked to me, and although I was already doing most of the CG stuff, she walked me through the entire process. She listened to everything I said, and made recommendations based on that. She was not a pushy salesperson, which was really a huge relief. The salon is such a warm inviting place, and her junior stylist, Keith Daone, seems to be following in Mary Anne's footsteps. I am so glad I took the plunge and walked in to her salon!

I recently brought my curly daughter who is only 11yo to MaryAnn on the advice of all of the reviews and discussion board talk here on naturallycurly.com. She is wonderful and so is her assistant, Keith. They really took time with both me and my daughter explaining how curly hair works, the importance of conditioning, and all the Deva tips of the trade. MaryAnn dry cut her hair, then they no-poo'd, conditioned & put in anGell, dried it for a very short time under the hood and trimmed again. My daughter's hair is quite long (halfway down her back) and 3b/c (you can see her in my profile) - not the easiest hair to de-tangle and get clean/conditioned. MaryAnn and Keith each took half of her head and de-tangled it methodically, and gently using only their fingers to get all the knots out. To say I was impressed and envious of that level of attention is an understatement! They were both just great with my daughter, and showed her which products to use (Deva line) and how to use them on her hair. When all was said and done my daughter's curls were more beautiful than I have seen them in a long time - each curl was defined and frizz-free. We bought the large no-poo and one condition and the prices were comparable to curlmart and aveyou plus no shipping since we bought while we were there. I highly recommend this salon to anyone with curly hair!

For as long as I can remember, I have done everything I could to get rid of my curly hair. Years worth of straightening, blow drying, and spending hours in front of the mirror. Then the light bulb went off and I realized I had a head of hair that would make my life easier and really complemented my face. But, I didn't know how to work with it. Thus comes Mary Ann and Personal Expressions. Ladies, if you need to understand curly hair, Mary Ann is the guru! She takes her time, asks lots of questions, LISTENS to you and them begins to help you understand your hair and how to care for it. She is not "scissor happy"! She cuts your hair dry! She does sell the Deva products but is not a pushy sales person. I can't wait to go back and get my next cut. Mary Ann is a great educator with the patience of a saint. And the Salon has a calm, relaxed and peaceful atmosphere. On a scale of 1 to 10, she is a 10.

I had my hair cut by the salon's owner last December, and I'm happy with it, though I'll admit I wasn't downright amazed or anything (but I had a curly cut before I went in so maybe others will have a more positive/dramatic experience). She definitely knows her stuff about curly hair, she'll walk you through the whole CG method if you're a newbie. She carries and uses the Deva line, as well as gives the Deva cut. Mary Anne herself is also a nice person, and she listens to you. If you want a professional Deva cut by someone who really knows what they're doing, check out Personal Expressions Hair Studio.

Mary Anne is great! She's very knowledgeable about hair and the products she uses. She gives the Deva cut. I love the fact my hair never gets dry and frizzy from colorings. She's so good at shaping your hair to flatter your face as well.
