I just learned that Patrik Alan has joined the team at Shane and Kauffman Salon!!!!!!! It's across the street from his old location. Here is the number 410-757-6424.
I used to take my curls to Alexander's of Annapolis, but it got way too expensive -- $110 for a Deva cut. I found myself waiting a year between cuts because I couldn't afford them, and that was just crazy. So I went on the Deva website and found a list of Deva-inspired stylists near Annapolis. Two of them were at the Patrik Alan Salon in Arnold, so I called for an appointment. Patrik was booked up, but Kristen had an opening. I've been for three Deva cuts with her, and I've been thrilled with every one of them. The first cut was fairly conservative and went from bra-strap length to slightly past my shoulders. She took her time explaining what she was doing, which was great. I'd been CG for about six months, and I brought a bag full of my various products to get her opinion on them. She looked carefully at the ingredients to make sure they were CG-friendly, and convinced me to stop using one of them because it was full of non-natural ingredients (even though it was technically CG-friendly). I'm glad she did, because the change made my hair even healthier and well hydrated. On the second visit, she gave me a mischievous grin and said, "You came back a second time -- you're mine now!" We agreed on a slightly shorter cut, this time about two inches past my chin, and it came out great. Before my most recent visit, this past Saturday, I fell in love with the photo on the cover of Lorraine Massey's new Curly Girl Handbook -- a chin-length curly bob. I took it to Kristen, and she immediately said, "Let's do it!" She adapted it for my face shape, and once again cut each curl carefully and methodically. The end result looked amazing ... even my husband, who tends to prefer longer hair on me, loved it. The coup de grâce, though, was that when I co-washed and styled it myself a couple of days later, it looked even better! I've gotten dozens of compliments on it all week, and I couldn't be more thrilled. Kristen is adorable -- warm, friendly, funky. And the salon, though small, is inviting and comfortable. From the moment you walk in the door, you feel welcomed and cared for. I recommend it 1000 percent. BTW, the salon is under new ownership; it's now called Georgia Alan Salon. http://www.georgiaalansalon.com/index2.php#/home/
Patrick worked me in the same day I called for my appointment. He cut my corkscrew curls in a cute short layered heart shape cut with a bang. He said the best thing I did for my hair was to stop shampooing it and to continue using the Deva Curl line and her techniques. He explained tome how to style and shampoo my super curly hair. I must admit I'm not to thrilled with some of the Deva Curl products. But I do love the No Poo conditioner and the One conditioner. I use Shea Naturals and Darcy Botanical products to style my curls. Since Patrick performed his magic on my hair after I wash and condition it and my hair just falls right back into the style he gave me every time. I will be seeing him again in 6 to 8 months. Once my hair has grown out at least 4-5 inches.
Oh my goodness, I am in love with my hair! I never knew I could love a haircut this much. I went and saw Patrick after reading the reviews on this site and finding out that he's a DevaCare specialist. This is absolutely the best cut I have ever had. My big problem was volume and body and with my new cut, I have it!! He was so personable and really spent a lot of time explaining things to me and teaching me how to do things with my hair. I have found a stylist for life!
I just got my first Deva cut with Dawn and had a great experience. She spent a lot of time with me, explained what she was doing the whole time, and gave me the best haircut I've ever had! I will definitely be going back!
I say Patrick on September 18, 2009. What a handful I was… I was going from 5 years of straightening back to my curls and I was a nervous mess. Patrick was great; he listened to me babble on about trying to return to my authentic self and walked me through what he was going to do. Once we agreed on a strategy he started to work his magic. At the time I couldn’t appreciate what he did for me. I literally freaked out, drove straight home, washed my hair and flat ironed it straight again. (See my blog about going natural again) It’s a fun story. Nine months later and my cut still looks great. In fact it has grown so much I left the salon with barely shoulder length curls and now they reach the middle of my back (about the bra line) AND it still looks great! Now that’s talent! You simply can’t go wrong with this man, he is a trained Deva Stylist and worth every penny! (about $80 for me that day) Some tips before you go: DO style your hair with a gel and let it dry naturally and DON’T put it in a pony tail, wear a hat or put anything else on your head to otherwise “hide” or smoosh your curls. He needs to see the natural curl pattern in order to cut it properly. He will cut it dry! Of course… wet curls lie as we all know and you will not leave feeling scalped. He didn’t even touch my longer curls in the back he only shaped my curls on the crown and sides so they worked together! He is amazing and I highly recommend him. I can’t wait to go back, I’m just growing out at the moment and want to give him more to work with! You will love this Curl Deva, he will make you comfortable and give you a great head of curls!

I have been coming to this salon for about a year and I have NEVER been happier with my hair! My hair has never looked so good, been so healthy or manageable until working with Patrick (and I have been to a lot of salons and I have bought a lot of different products!). I am so thrilled with the salon and Patrick that I tell everyone that I know - curly or straight - to pay him a visit! I highly recommend Patrick and his team!!
I have been coming to the salon for about a year now and I have never been happier with my hair. I have tried a lot of salons in the area and a lot of products and NONE have ever come close to making my hair look as good as Patrick and his team. My hair is healthier and more manageable than it has ever been!! I recommend the salon to everyone I meet with even the slightest curl (or not!). I highly recommend the salon. I am so happy to have found it!!
After years of fighting with my curly hair to be straight, in June I decided to stop fighting. In July I got my hair cut by Kristen. I loved the the way she cut my hair and the lesson on the CG technique. She really took her time and answered all my questions. I liked the first haircut, but I am loving the second! I recommend Kristen to all my curly friends.
I went yesterday to get a "curly" haircut, which was way, way long due... Once in her chair, Kristen told me that nobody ever disliked her cuts.I was like okay, that's always what they show, but how do you know that they don't cry when they get back to their car?? and she told me, "because they keep coming back." I was a little bit skeptical because of my past experience with salons, which consisted of just being another member of the salon's "to do list" of the day. To my surprise, I was treated so well, and they spent so much time with me actually teaching me how to take care of my hair. Treating your hair the right way is what can bring you to love your hair; feel good about your hair. This is why I'm so happy I went to Kristen's chair. This is going to sound totally cliche, and two days ago I probably rolled my eyes at the other reviews that said it, but I truly am feeling better about myself. lol. (And it doesn't hurt that literally around 50 people complimented my hair today...) Feeling good about yourself is what yields success, so I am glad that I have gained in that aspect. I would totally recommend this salon (Patrick who finished me off, also completely awesome), thank you thank you! <<33 Wow this sounds really cheesy, not usually how I speak, but I must say it happens to be true. lol
I have to jump on the bandwagon here with my praise for Patrick and his salon. Patrick is amazing and gave me the best Deva cut I've ever had (and I've been to at least 3 other Deva-trained stylists). He gave me his full attention and made me feel like I was his only client. He's very kind and open to questions, and he's a complete devotee to the Deva concept. My cut was incredible! His salon (which is super charming and comfortable) is more than an hour drive for me, but absolutely worth every minute. I highly recommend him for all Maryland curly girls!
I went to Patrick Alan Salon a two weeks ago to present them with the impossible hair that I have. My friend refered me to the stylist Kristen, who i imidiately fell inlove with. She is warm, fun, energetic, and made me feel at home and calm as she worked her magic on my hair. After an hour i walked out of the salon feeling like a new person. My hair was bouncy, neat and full of life. the best part about it is that she taught me exactly how to achieve the look and now two weeks later, it look like shes does my hair everyday. The salon itself is secluded, calming, and very personal. The experience in general was uncomparable. This salon is perfect for anyone who is ready to finally get the hair they have been waiting for, and meet amazing people who will help you get there
WoW!! i just got a cut at this salon and was hoping to get in with Patrick, based on the reviews. he was booked for months but they had another stylist named Kristen so i went in her chair. Kristen was very pleasant and She as well as Patrick was trained the DEVA way. she really knows her stuff! the cut was so modern and funky. i never in a million years thought my curls would ever look stylish. but Kristen at last saved me from certain fashion hell. the salon is way friendly and upscale at the same time. ATTENTION curly girls! MUST GO!!!!!!!!!
I have to post to echo the raves about Patrick - he is absolutely wonderful and is truly the best stylist I have been to since making the "natural" switch from a relaxer a few years ago. He has worked his magic on my hair twice now, and he has a real understanding of curly hair, the needs of curly girls in general, and how to meet the needs of the individual client. I Prior to Patrick, I had been going to another highly-regarded stylist on this site for years (even before growing out the relaxer). She helped me through my transition and, while I love her to pieces, there was one limitation that drove me nuts - her cuts looked beautiful when they were short, but grew out into the dreaded triangle. EVERY time. For two years. I've always worn my hair longer, and wanted to keep that up with the curls – but she only seemed to be able to make my curls work when they were short. I found Patrick on this site and made an appointment. When I sat down on my first trip, I explained my frustrations and Patrick understood immediately. He listened carefully, asked some questions, spent some time studying my curl pattern, and immediately went to work on the (dry!) "DevaCurl" cut. At first, I was surprised at how detailed his work was - literally each curl - but once I saw the finished product, I was thrilled. He gave me some excellent tips and a real understanding of the “realities†of curly hair. I had a cut I loved and was armed with knowledge as to how to keep it up. I was on cloud 9. The real test, though (and the reason I waited to write a review) was the "growing out" period. Well - six months passed - and I LOVED it. Beautiful, long layers that fell where they were supposed to go without much work on my part. Healthier, more hydrated curls that no longer frizzed within 5 seconds of drying. AND NO TRIANGLE. Bliss. I just went back for my second cut and was as happy as I was after the first. In addition to Patrick’s skill, friendliness, and willingness to answer questions, the salon is comfortable and very relaxing. What are you still waiting for? Go, go!
I am mixed girl Korean and Black and have very curly hair. I came to Patrick after reading about him on this site. I live in Pasadena Maryland, so it was not a far drive. Patrick is great!! He cut my hair and also changed my really red hair to a brown with blonde highlights. I like it so much better. He is one of the best stylist I have ever had. I have lived all over the place. Hawaii, Alaska, Vermont, overseas, and so on. He also does my friends hair too. She had blonde permed hair and now she is a brunette. She really looks beautiful. He is also trained in the Deva curl cut.
Patrick does live up to his reputation. When I made the appointment, he advised me to co-wash only until my visit, and discussed his technique. So I was feeling pretty comfortable about trying him out: at least he knew the talk. Well, I learned that he is more than talk. He has trained with Massey, and has thoroughly adopted the CurlyGirl philosophy and technique. When I arrived, he spritzed my hair with lavender water and scrunched it to see the curl pattern. Then he picked out each individual curl and cut it. He never once grabbed more than about a quarter inch of hair... I swear it looked almost like he used cuticle scissors to cut. He then had his assistant co-wash and condition, and she scrunched it properly too. After a light scrunching with paper towels, he examined the cut again. He put a several DevaCurl styling products in (a bit too much for my taste) and diffused it dry. I loved the curl definition and the shape of the cut, but the true test was... could I do it myself? The answer is a resounding yes!!! I've since washed and styled it... and it's just as well-defined and well-shaped. A true measure of success: I CAN do this at home.
Since I moved to Annapolis over a year ago, I have been searching for a stylist who could do a great job cutting my curly hair. My search is finally over! Patrick truly understands curly hair. I’m so impressed with his skills, techniques, and approach. He even cut my hair dry – which makes so much sense because he could see how to cut according to what my curls were doing. I had the last appointment of the evening but I never felt rushed. He was also really cool to hang out with. Most importantly, I felt like a diva walking out of his salon!
Patrick is fabulous! I had a minor coloring crisis (ok, it was orange) and I called his salon based on reading rave reviews here. He answered on a Monday (they were closed) and gave me wonderful advice for what I could do at home to help keep the hair healthy (olive oil treatment) until I could get in to see him. Once there, he really looked at the curls, the color, and made some wonderful decisions on how to get the color back to normal while adding a bit of interest with lovely highlights. He also used a great undercut technique to give me more body on top with less poof at the ends. This man knows curls and he's wonderful to work with. Who else gives a great cut, color, and a hug at the end? This is right outside of Annapolis and totally worth the drive from wherever you might be coming from.
I recently went to Patrick for the second time and just had to write about how great he is with curls. Every time I leave his salon I feel like a million bucks, and he treats his clients very well. Even though he was already booked he squeezed me in, and his salon, which still looks brand new, is a relaxing and stress-free place to wait in quiet little Arnold. He's very good about knowing how to layer not taking too much off my shoulder length curls, and his cuts still look when you're busy and don't have time to style-- a near impossible feat with my dry, frizz-loving mop. Plus he's super nice and NOT a Diva (at least, not while he's working :). Arnold is just a short hop from Annapolis, and a drive for me from Greenbelt, but definately worth it. GO Patick!
