I did the big chop 4 years ago and embraced the curl, sort of. I never got another cut and not I had really long out of control unshared hair. Thank goodness for Theresa! She took a lot of time after the dry cut really conditioning my hair and now I have really yummy curls. She is knowledgeable about care and products. I already used Diva products, but I left the salon knowing how to use the properly and I can almost replicate exactly at home. But it's a week later and my hair is still cute and I get a lot of compliments, and a lot of people asked me where I got it done. The price is so reasonable and the salon itself is nice too. I would warn that you might miss it, the salon is just a door on along the road that leads down a hallway that opens into the salon. But we'll worth the trip. I'll definitely be returning.

I feel so fortunate that I live 10 minutes away from such an incredible salon! All my life I have dreaded getting haircuts because inevitably, the stylists were not experienced in rendering a flattering cut for curly hair. After reading the reviews on this website for AK Hair Studio, I finally booked an appointment, and I couldn't be more pleased and excited about the results. Theresa is an extremely knowledgeable, talented stylist who has a real passion for making curly hair look its best in its natural state. I love how she advocates curly hair education and takes the time to show her clients how to care for and style their hair. As the only person with curly hair in my family, I've received no guidance on managing my hair; Theresa shared some really indispensable tips with me that have completely changed how my hair looks and feels! Thanks to her help, I've been able to tame the beast and bring out the natural beauty of my curls, to the point where I receive many compliments on my new haircut every day. Don't give up, curlies-- there is hope on the horizon, and it lies in AK Hair Studio.

I found myself with an afternoon free and my curls in definite need of a trim. I had been to AK Salon and was very pleased with the haircut I received from Jen. The only problem is that Jen wasn't in all day! I asked if there was another "Curly Trained" stylist and I was sent to Theresa. She is wonderful!!! It's been 6 days now and the cut is just as good if not better as when I left the salon. I told Theresa that I wanted to keep the length but that my hair was getting rather limp. I have a ton of hair, so there's no reason for it to look stringy and flat. She suggested more layers and went about trimming my hair so that it all just fell perfectly into place. I would recommend her (and have!) to any Curly Girl!

I started going to Jill and Courtney when they were both at another Salon. I am a very busy person and am loathe to spend time doing my hair. I wanted something that was easy for me to accomplish on my own without investing hours of time in front of a mirror looking at myself. Jill (stylist) did a curly cut which made my hair look beautiful, bouncy and defined my curls in an amazing way - and it is easy! I actually didn't know my hair could do that and it takes me about 15 minutes to achieve something close to what I walk out with. Of course, I could never match Jill's level expertise but I can come close! Courtney (colorist) has always done great color and she always makes me feel better when she "confirms" my grey hairs are just really blond. I always get so many compliments on my hair, that I won't consider allowing anyone else to do it. I recently moved to NYC and rent a car every 6-8 weeks to drive out and have my hair done. It is totally worth it!

I decided to make an appointment with Jen for a haircut after reading the reviews on this site. I have always struggled with styling my thin and fine curly hair. The only way my hair ever looked neat was japanese straightened. I have an extremely sensitive scalp and delicate hair and really do not want to have my hair straightened after the time I spent growing it out. I am so thrilled that i found this site and Jen.I haven't had a bad hair day since she cut my hair. I actually like my curly hair for the first time in my life. It was so nice to have my hair done by someone that didn't want to blow out my hair.

I absolutely love AK hair salon in Oyster Bay and everyone who works there! I have been going there for the past year and have never been disappointed. I have really curly hair and getting haircuts has always been a nightmare in the past. I always would end up putting my hair up right after I walk out of the salon and wearing it up for weeks afterwards. This is not the case with Theresa. Theresa has both cut my hair and blown it out straight and done a fantastic job. She is Devachon trained to cut and style curly hair. She cuts your hair dry so you know exactly how much is coming off and how it is going to look. I actually allowed her to take more than 1/2inch off this time and I have to say I don't feel like I lost all my length like I usually would. She also is great with all types of hair and does amazing updo's! I highly recommend Theresa!!

This past year i’ve been going to AK Hair Studio and I could not be any happier! The salon is gorgeous, clean, and everyone there is very friendly. Courtney is amazing and I am never disappointed with the outcome. Originally I was going from shop to shop trying to find the right Blonde to keep until I found Courtney and she always gets the right color for me. Also, I tend to change my mind a lot and go from one extreme to the other. Courtney makes my hair look beautiful every time. I am absolutely a blonde but during the past summer I went brunette and she made my hair look amazing and I loved being dark but the truth is Blondes really do have more fun. She highlighted my hair all over again in steps and right now I LOVE my hair more than ever. I get so many compliments on my hair especially my highlights and every time I make sure to hand them Courtney’s card and I promise them she is the best! My hair is also extremely thick so I always worry that my hair dressers will not be able to evenly highlight and color my hair but she is able to make it look perfect every time. Not only is she absolutely amazing and talented but she makes you feel very comfortable at the salon just like family.

went for a cut last thursday but wanted to wait a few days to review just to see how my hair did at home. was very happy with the cut. Jen was very knowledgable about curly hair. lots of stuff most curlies know but most stylists do not so was very happy with the tips and she was very honest about what my hair would and wouldn't do as far as cuts go. Also was happy that I could leave the salon and not stick my hair in a bun. When I go for a wet cut, stylists don't realize they are breaking down the curl when they comb it out and then don't know how to deal the mess that is created so I end up going home to restyle it myself and leave looking worse than when I came. not a good feeling and not so with Jen. curls were great and will definitely be back. Great cut, knowledgable and a very friendly staff. great experience all around

AK hair studio is by far my favorite place to get my hair done. I couldn't find a picture of what I wanted my hair to look like exactly, but I had this idea in my head. I went in and explained what I wanted to Courtney and it came out exactly how I imagined it, no picture or anything! She nailed the color, the highlights, everything. Jen was also amazing, she always gives the best haircuts! She knows what looks best and always does a great job!! I would recommend AK hair studio to anyone!

Finally a place I can get a terrific hair cut and color. For years I have been going to two different places for color and cut. Now that I have found Courtney and Jen, I can get both in one salon. I have never been to a better colorist than Courtney. She really listens to what you want, and takes the time to discuss wether it will work for you. She always gets it right!!!! Jen can really cut hair!! I used to go home from other salons and blow dry my hair the way I like it. When I go to Jen I can go straight out, without stopping home first.I would recommend this salon to everybody!!!

I just got back from AK Salon and I'm thrilled. I had gone to Jen a year ago when she was at Colors in Cold Spring Harbor but I lost track of her after her move. In the meantime I've been going into Devachon in NYC. They're great, but very expensive and a real trip to do every 6-8 weeks. Jen is great!! She's so sweet and personable and most importantly she really knows her stuff. Her training with the Deva people shows. The salon is lovely. It's pretty, clean, and not too big. Everyone there was so friendly. I was also given a 20% savings as a new client! I've found myself a new salon!

Jen has been cutting my hair for the past 3 years. I used to go into the city to Devachan in the city. Yes, they are excellent and professional. Jen's skill level is comparable to the stylists in the city. It is so hard to find people who know how to cut curly hair well. What I like better about Jen is her personality. She is not full of herself. She is sweet, caring and always does an excellent job. I am not sure if there is anyone else on LI who could cut curly hair with the same skill. I am not sure what I can say except that she is great and I always look forward to leaving my hair in her hands. As a matter of fact my daughter is getting married this year and I asked Jen to do our hair. That is how much comfidence I have in her. As long as she cuts hair, I will be following her.

I have been to Courtney two times for hair color and she is hands down THE BEST!!! A previous colorist turned my hair black and I was devastated so after reading great reviews I decided to try AK Hair Studio. Courtney saved my LIFE!!! I really do not know what color line or techniques she used but it is absolute magic! I literally went from black witch hair to a beautiful rich chocolate brown after the first time she did my color. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that she was the owner I honestly in my forty years have never met an owner/colorist so nice and passionate about what she does! She even called me after to make sure that I liked my hair!!!Jen also styled my hair and it looked gorgeous!! I will absolutely get a haircut from her next time. I LOVE this salon!!!

I followed Jen here from her previous salon, and I would follow her all over the island if I had to! I spent years getting my hair cut at Devachan, and then I moved out of the city, found myself in Suffolk County and the mother of twins with very little time be hauling my hairs into Manhattan for haircuts. I found Jen via the Devachan salon finder, gave her a try, and could not have been happier with the results! That was 5 years ago and I still adore Jen and have never had a bad haircut from her. And when it was time for my kids to get their first haircut, even though they're not curly, I brought them to Jen, too. She's a great stylist who knows curly hair, and a lovely person to boot.

So this is my second review because i love this salon so much. Up until last month, I had never every colored my hair but I had always wanted to try it out. Around the holidays I was seeing lovely Jen for a haircut when I commented that I wanted to try out highlights. Immediately she spoke to Courtney who was kind enough to fit me into her busy schedule (there were other people waiting for her at the salon) and she gave me a couple of conservative highlights in order to ease me into the hair color experience. I was SO happy with the results and I am sad that I told her not to give me too many highlights because she definitely knows what she is doing. People at work have given me compliments on my highlights and next time I am definitely going to be more hands-off and let Courtney do her thing, because she definitely knows what she is doing. P.S. My highlighted hair is super shiny and catches light whenever I'm outside. Definitely feel like a movie star!

After 7 years of Japanese straightening my hair, I decided to grow out my natural curls. Since I live in the city, I decided to go to Devachan to have them try to teach me how to style my mostly straight/somewhat curly hair as it grew out. The stylist gave me an alright haircut but the price was a bit much and I felt like everyone had drank the Kool-Aid because all I heard about was the Deva Curl products and how much I had to buy them. For my next haircut, I decided to look online for something different and I found out about Jennifer W on this site. I first went to visit her in June 2010. The salon is small and cozy and you instantly feel at home. The receptionist (who is very nice, by the way) offers you wine or Chai tea and everyone says hello to you. Then you finally get into Jennifer's chair and she takes the time to ask you what you want and ask if you have any hair questions. During my first visit, I probably bombarded Jennifer with questions for about twenty minutes and she patiently responded to each of my questions and gave me ideas on how to deal with my in-between hair. Then came the haircut. She took her time and seemed to be working her "magic." Then she gave my hair an intense leave-in conditioner and showed me how to style my hair. My hair was super shiny and wonderful. Sadly, my hair was still a half-straight mess and I had to wait until my third haircut with Jennifer, by which time she had managed to cut off all the straight pieces and not leave me with supershort hair, until I could appreciate just how great of a stylist she really is. My hair is short (not her fault, but mine because I couldn't stand the straight pieces) but it looks adorable. People at work, including men, compliment me on my hair and ask to touch it. As someone who works in a corporate environment and always thought that straight hair was the only way to look professional, Jennifer has given me a new outlook on how to be put-together and still be natural. I am so excited for my hair to grow out because i cannot imagine the wonders that Jennifer will do to my long hair!!! P.S. She also gives you tips on which products to use, gives you free samples, and never pushes you buy anything at the store. My mother who has straight hair (with the Japanese straightening, of course) now wants to have Jennifer cut her hair because I talk about how much I love Jen's haircuts!

As a very difficult hair case that no one ever gets right. It seemed like no matter what color anyone has ever put on my hair it would automatically turn red though I have always wanted to be a nice golden blonde (think Jessica Simpson). I just basically thought it was not meant to be for me. I have gone to Courtneys prior salon where the owner did my color and it was never right. When the staff moved to Oyster Bay I had no other option but to try Courtney. Well to my surprise she actually gave me exactly what I have always wanted!!!!! And in less steps. Not sure if she uses different products than her prior salon but my hair is so much healthier and shinier than it has ever been before. I have sent so many people to her for little 'miracles'. My niece who has been dying her hair black for so long actually came home with J-Lo color in one day (and her hair is down to her belt) and it was still shiney and healthy. Not sure if she used color or a magic wand but Courtneys talent and skill speak for itself. Also the Salon is a little hidden secret but once you find it you walk into a magical world. The salon is immaculatley clean, the staff is so warm and attentive. The receptionist brought me a cappacchino and I was transformed into what I have now dubbed my fantasy life. ( I have children) One can only imagine this is how royalty lives....

I have lived in NY all my life and use to go to Jen at her previous salon but to be honest with you I would follow her all over the world. I have lived in NC for the past 3 years and have tried all the 'best' salons here and have always had to go back to NY to Jen to fix it. For the past year and a half after learning my lesson I will never let anyone else ever touch my hair again! I have very long wavy hair and like to wear it long and straight/styled but in NC I'm in the pool most of the time so I like a good cut that I can get out of the pool shake my head and have it fall perfectly. Jen is the second person I have found in my 44 yrs that can actually fill my tall order (the first person unfortunatley retired). And she does it perfectly everytime!!! As you can see from my user name I am also a hairdresser. And I know talent when I find it. Wish I could give her 500 stars instead of just 5. SHE IS THAT GOOD!!!! oh and PS. I don't go up to NY every 6 weeks for a hair cut but no matter how long I try to stretch it my hair always looks perfect. The cut is that good!!!

She is great at what she does a true artist. I will recommend all friends & family to this salon. Everyone there is very friendly & professional. I read all of the great reviews from this website about AK Hair Studio and decided to give it a try. I went to Jen today and I had to write a review myself. This was by far the BEST haircut I have ever had!!! The salon is beautiful and extremely clean! Everyone is so nice and professional. Jen is so talented with curly hair. She took the time to go over everything with me I felt so comfortable. My hair really has never looked so good! After seeing Jen I will NEVER straighten my hair again! I can't wait to go back! I must say that everyone that left the salon while I was there looked great. Next time I am definitely getting color! Do yourself a favor and go to this salon!

Jen is such a wonderful find for anyone with curly hair! I am thrilled with finally finding someone who not only really knows how to perfectly cut and style curly hair, but truly cares about helping her clients learn how to care for and style their curly hair. Jen goes above and beyond to not only pamper you and treat you like a queen, but she really empowers you by showing you how to handle your curly hair, teaching you so many easy tricks and techniques and explaining everything so you will always get the best results at home and not just in the salon. She is so incredibly professional and very sweet. You can tell how passionate she is about what she does. I am so happy to have found her and AK hair studio! I live about a half hour away from Oyster Bay, but it's definitely worth the trip! Jen of AK hair studio definitely gets my vote!

I used to get my hair done in the Manhattan area and I've had the same stylist for 11 years . I heard many great things about how Courtney has worked wonders with damaged hair. Since I really wanted color I decided to give her a try. I was amazed. Not only did she manage to get my hair to one color but the highlights were amazing. I gave her very little detail and my hair came out better than I imagined it. I travel all the way from New Jersey just for her to do my hair. It's so worth it. She's been doing my hair for a few months and already there is no breakage, it's healthy and with the products she recommended my hair remains managable. She is worth the traffic, worth the gas and definitely worth the money. She SAVED my hair!!!!

Courtney has been doing my hair coloring for 8 years. I am extremely excited about the opening of her new salon. Everyone including her treat me so great. The salon is beautiful, you feel relaxed, at home. She did an amazing job with the end result. I love coming here because I leave very satisfied and happy with the results. All the girls are friendly, courteous and professional. Jen's curly haircuts are AMAZING! i have never met anyone more knowledgable with curly hair than Courtney and Jen. I will never go anywhere else. :)

Jenn is the best! Do yourself a favor and go see her. She spent lots of time explaining how to handle my curls and teaching me about different products to try and others to avoid. She also spent a lot of time washing my hair and allowing the conditioner to penetrate. And most important, the cut was the best. It works well, and very few stylists I've ever gone to know how to cut curly hair and make it work. She is a blessing! Go see her!

Jennifer is the best! I've never liked my extremely curly hair, but was so excited when I walked out of the salon! Jennifer did a great job and was very accommodating -- showing me how to work my hair and style it. It will take some practice to get my hair exactly the way Jennifer styled it, but I still love the cut!

I am so excited!!! I just found AK Hair Studio in Oyster Bay. The salon is new to the area but the staff explained that they worked in Cold Spring Harbor for years. Jen cut my curls dry and then showed me how to style them at the end. She was so helpful and knowledgeable. The salon has the city feel without the Manhattan prices. Everyone is so friendly and I can't wait for my next visit.

Hi Ladies, I want you to all know about the fabulous Jenn. She has trained at the Devachan and knows their technique for cutting curls dry. She will not just give you a cut for curls, she will give you a cut for your curls on you! I used to make the trip to Devachan but was never 100% happy because the stylist cut and styled my hair the way they wanted and never listened to me. Jenn will listen and do a cut that fits you and your face best. Please read past reviews for Colors in Cold Spring Harbor NY, Jenn worked there for 4 yrs and has many great reviews. This is her new location so save a trip to the city and check her out. Courtney who did color at Colors also moved with her.

I just got back from my first appt with Jen. This is the best cut I've had in ten years. She is very knowledgable and talented. My only thing is that my hair is damaged, so to really see my curls I had to add laminate when I got home. Other than that, Jen and the salon were a perfect experience.

OK curly girls of Long Island, you need to see Jennifer!!! I love my hair for the first time in years. From the moment I stepped through the door I felt I was in great hands. She did cut my hair dry and then no pooed it and styled it. I walked out with ringlets. Love it!!!!

I just had my first curly haircut this morning with Jennifer. I couldn't wait to come home and review it here. This salon is wonderful. Jennifer took me to her chair and explained the dry cut process and talked me through every step of the cut, wash and style. She was amazing! She talked about all the products she used and never once did I feel pressured to buy anything. She even sent me home with samples without my asking!!!! I absolutely love my new cut and highly recommend this place to anyone!

I use to take the trip into the city to Devachan. I found Jennifer and she is magic. She cuts your hair to suit you, not just one basic cut for everyone with curly hair. I am getting color done next. Great people, great location. I would tell every curly in Suffolk County to see her. I LOVE my hair.

After researching a lot to find a great curly salon I was heading into NYC to go to Ouidad. I checked this site and found the previous review and decided, Jennifer may be able to help me solve my curly mess. She is a miracle worker. She confirmed that she was trained at Devachan in NYC and watching her cut my hair dry was fascinating (and scary). My curls have NEVER looked so good. Courtney gave me a wonderful color job too. She highlighted my curls with a honey/caramel and dyed the rest a rich dark brown to get rid of the reddish tones that I hated in my mousy brown hair. Between Jennifer and Courtney I left feeling reborn! And Colors is a wonderful, welcoming salon. Everyone was so nice and accomodating and they were having a little wine, cheese and cracker party as well! I highly recommend Jennifer for curly Long Islanders who dont want to travel into NYC for an overpriced cut.

So very pleased with my haircut. I have gone to so many hairstylists who are very good with straight hair, but who do not know how to cut curly hair. Jennifer is fantastic. She first spoke to me about the technique she uses and then explained step-by-step what I should do to maintain it. She cuts the hair dry, then washes and styles. She took into account the texture of my hair and shape of my face and cut accordingly. The salon is small but decorated beautifully and is located in a charming location.

I used to go out to the city every six months or so to see carlos @ Devachan. And as much as I love his cuts he always cut and styled my hair the way he wanted me to wear it. He never actually cut it to fit me and the way I liked to style my hair. So that brings me to my HERO Jennifer, I worked with her mom who told me she took classes from devachan and knew their technique. I went and was I must say I will never make that horrible trip to the city again. I dont need too...she listened to me and gave me a cut based on how I wear my hair. Its a beautiful clean salon and for all the women out on LI that would like an alternative to the city I would suggest Colors. I do believe another stylist there is also trained in the devachan color technique but that I am not sure of. Definetly worth a shot.
