I love my M Salon experience. The salon's funky look was why I walked in the door and then I met Dana. DANA IS THE BEST. If the funky decor gives you pause, close your eyes and get yourself seated with Dana. BUT Dana is moving! Thankfully only a block down the street to Hair Connection. Hair Connection is lucky to have him. That said I see lots of folks travel from afar to work with Dana, so they should. Dana listens to your needs and wishes, then arrives at a low maintenance and no fuss cut. Dana does not solve cuts with products, rather with his diligent and meticulous technique. Dana gives you a cut that grows out beautifully, almost to a fault as you do not get to see Dana enough because the cut last so long. What you get is worth waaay more than the current $45 price. I am continually grateful for having found Dana and wish you all the same.

I have thick, bushy black curly hair (think early Andie MacDowell) and it has always been tricky to find stylists who can work with it. I started going to Dana over 5 years ago after reading some positive online reviews, and I've been so happy with the results that I've continued to go back ever since. He has given me a variety of cuts ranging from "long enough to put it up" to more bobbed styles, and they've all worked out well. The cuts give a nice shape to my hair, and they also grow out well (I tend to procrastinate about making hair appts, so I've put this to the test). I hear that M Salon will be closing down business, and Dana is moving down the street to Hair Connection on Mass Ave in January 2013 - I will definitely be following him there!

Dana always takes the extra time to get everything just right and he usually knows what to do before I even ask what I'm looking for. I always end up with a great cut and lots of complements. I have short curly hair, which I like to keep tame and funky and Dana is the best at giving me exactly what I want each time! I'm sad to say he is relocating, but fortunately he will only be a few doors down to hair connection 1768 mass ave as of jan 3 and I even have the number 617-354-9133. I highly recommend going to Dana if you are looking for someone who knows how to cut curly hair. I have been going to Dana since about 2005 and am always happy with my cuts (including the one I got this morning). I have long fine curly (and wavy) hair, a lot of it. Depending on the humidity and lots of other factors my hair can look like a lion's mane or look (almost) perfectly tame with movie star curls. Dana knows I am low maintenance and all I'm going to do is wash it, put frizz stuff in it, and let it air dry. He gives me a cut that gives my hair a shape and frames my face, but that I can still put in a bun or ponytail to keep it out of my face. Dana sits you down with your hair dry and asks what you want, and gives you options based on your hair type and that would look flattering. He does not try to force any kind of upselling as far as products or color, etc. I also really like the salon itself, with all of its eclectic art and non-snobby feel. Dana has been cutting hair for decades and knows what he is doing. Find him at http://www.msaloncambridge.com/bio-dana.html

I've had nothing but great haircuts for five years now, and I'll follow Dana anywhere! I work full-time and work out a lot, and I need to be able to make quick transitions between activities. Since Dana, my hair is drip-dry, wash-n-wear, and always looks great. I shower in the morning, towel-dry my hair, and jump in the car. Some days I realize half-way through the day at work that I never combed it out, but it still looks good. For the first time in my life, I actually get complements on my hair! I've had my curls both short and long, and Dana has been great for me with both styles. I've convinced friends and relatives to use him, too. (My stepsister actually drove 3-1/2 hours from Upstate New York for a number of years, until gas prices went sky high.) The shop is funky and fun. I walked out of the salon with a mullet, business in the front, party in the back. Needless to say, I can't wear my hair up. I got a corrective haircut at Judy Jetson and am now trying to grow out the awful haircut that Dana gave me. As the last poster said, it's painful. Each time, however, I left with a short haircut. This was fine, except for my last visit where I was trying to grow out my hair for my wedding. He not only chopped off my hair, but I literally had a mullet. I kid you not. It was extremely disappointing (thank God I had over a year for it to grow out, but it was painful). If you want a short cut, he's excellent. If you want longer hair, I'm not sure Dana is the right hairdresser. Like many others, I found Dana Kaplan on this Web site and was amazed at the multitude of glowing reviews. I decided to give him a try – and I am so glad that I did. Dana truly is the “Curly Hair Whisperer.” Just about every other stylist I have ever been to has cut my thick, bushy curls into a style that looks nice when I leave the salon. However, I’m never able to duplicate the look and within a few weeks my hair starts growing out and looking bushy and messy again. This is not the case with Dana. He thinks about the grow-out phase and cuts my hair in a way that looks fantastic for weeks … and weeks. In addition, the styles he’s given me are easy to do on my own – which is hugely important to me since I have two children under 3 and little time for primping. I am able to look “put together” with minimum effort – all thanks to Dana the Curly Hair Whisperer! I have been going to Dana for over a year now and would never go anywhere else. Aside from his vast talent and decades of experience, Dana is a wonderful person. I look forward to chatting with him when I come in for a cut.

I went to Dana after reading all of the great reviews on this site, and after trying unsuccessfully to make peace with my curly hair a few times. I've had my hair cut by him 3 times now, and overall I have been pleased. The first cut was when my hair was long, and he shaped it up and brought out the curl really well. I've been wearing it curly ever since. I'd been wanting to cut it short for a while now and ran htis by him during my first cut. He was supportive and so I bit the bullet and had him cut it short the second time I visited M Salon. Still good results. The 3rd time I went back was for a trim to shape up my hair as I grew it out again, but this time the cut didn't last for much longer than about 2 weeks. It just didn't grow out very well and I found I needed another cut badly after just a few weeks. Although his fee of $45 is pretty inexpensive for the city, it wasn't cheap enough that I could afford it very often! I decided to try another salon (Twilight; I wrote a review for them, too), and was quite pleased. I think I will go back to them rather than to Dana/M given that I got more attention, just as good (if not better) a cut, and all for a cheaper price. I do have to say that I didn't find M Salon as a whole very comfortable. It's a funky place but the staff isn't particularly friendly (if not being downright rude). I had the same experience that it sounds like a lot of others have had with the owner and rest of the staff. Overall I was pleased with Dana's cuts, although I did not feel like he spent a lot of time on my hair (each cut was about 30 minutes). I felt like he knew what he was doing - of course, a good thing - but felt like he didn't spend a lot of time getting to know my hair.

I like big hair, and most stylists tell me they don't and completely disregard what I want. But Dana actually agreed with me! He new what would look good with my face shape and what would be the best way to cut MY curls...knowing that not everyone's curls are NOT the same!!!!!! Dana listens! He lets you have input and combines what you want, with what he thinks is best for for your hair/face type. Plus, he's conservative...didn't take too much off at all! In fact, I'll probably go back in a month or so and get an inch or two more off. Dana's great!!!!!! I highly recommend him. After reading all of Dana's rave reviews, I jokingly said to my husband, "Do you want to go to Boston??" (We live in Pennsylvania -- 7 hours away) We decided to make a weekend out of it and see some of the other sites, and I was so excited that I was about to get the best hair cut of my life... or so I thought. Dana sat me in the chair and spent a brief few minutes talking to me about my hair. I told him that I had been to a Ouidad affiliate a few months earlier and I was told to grow out my layers, since layers add volume to my already thick hair. Dana convinced me that since my hair was so thick and course, I not only needed layers, but I needed "texturizing", because it is "too heavy" to be all one length. I figured he really knew what he was talking about since there were so many good reviews on him, so I let him do what he wanted. So he washed my hair and cut it WET, even though I told him that my hair has different "patches" of curliness and when people cut it as they would straight hair, it ends up looking uneven. He didn't seem to think any of my input would be a problem and pretty much just did what he thought would make my hair look good. I've waited four weeks to do this review, because I keep hoping that it'll look better, but my hair is a mess. It's lumpy and uneven, and totally has the "mushroom" look. I wish I knew how there were so many good reviews, and yet he goes against all that is written about cutting curly hair (cut it DRY, don't do layers or "thinning"). I'm so unbelievably disappointed, and now have to go for a hair-cut repair. All I can think is that he must do very well on wavy hair, or hair that has the same kind of curl all over.

After TEN MONTHS I am still trying to grow out this nasty haircut, and my hair is no longer silky and shiny like it used to be. This is the most God-awful haircutting technique I have ever experienced. Worse yet, I've heard that a lot of hairdressers are using it without informing their clients, as Dana did with me. I don't have to make appointments weeks in advance. I don't have to spend alot of time primping to get it to look good the next day. Maybe the salon is to your taste or not, maybe you like the owners dog or not. None of it matters to me. I just want a great cut. Lastly, not only have I not had a better cut in 20 years than the cuts I get from Dana, but I haven't had my hair cut by the same person more than twice for the past 16 years. (I'm a bit of a control freak so there's no chance of miscommunication). What do I see a few minutes into the cut? Texturizing scissors! I asked her what she was doing. "Oh, it needs that for volume" Worst cut ever. After a cut like this, I have to go get it cleaned up by someone else otherwise it will be a frizzy, tangly mess. I'm still furious about this. I decided to go to Dana based on the rave reviews I read about him on this site.. He has been cutting my hair for over a year now and I would not go to anyone else. I am so glad I have found him... I have thick, curly hair and each time he gives me a cut I just love it.. I never appreciated my curls until Dana started cutting my hair.. He takes time and pride when cutting your hair and will never ever rush you. I rarely wore my hair down because it can get a bit unruly but now that Dana's been cutting my hair I tend to wear it down more often. I would highly recommend him for anyone..

I just went to M Salon this past weekend for a much needed cut. I made an appointment with Matt (Dana wasn't available). I am so happy with the outcome. I know Dana is great and gets all the rave reviews(my friend goes to him and her hair looks amazing), but I think people need to try Matt out as well. He is very sweet, listens to what you want (i.e. doesn't cut too much off) and does a beautiful blow out. My hair feels so soft and it looks so healthy.

DANA!! Congratulations on your new advice column! You are a natural! Now everyone will have a better idea of how to "deal" with curly, wavy, out of control hair! Once again..you saved the day with another great cut! And..you are such a dear person..it's a joy seeing you! Thanks so much!

I couldn't get an appt w/ the main stylist so I they gave me Matt. Having naturally curly hair I was worried but he did a great job in cutting it and styling it as I usually like it. I would definitely go back and have Matt do it if given the chance.

After seeing all the positive recommendations for Dana, I scheduled an appointment. Dana was very pleasant and friendly throughought the entire appointment. He analyzed my hair while it was dry, then told me what he thought would look best and how it would work. He worked with my natural style and when I asked him how it would grow out he said that it would grow out well so that it would be simple and easy to take care of. He did cut it wet but didn't cut off too much at once, and kept the length that I wanted. Great stylist; I wouldn't hesitate to go back.
