I went and saw Lora last week Thursday; I biked all the way from Claremont to Rancho after reading the reviews and boy was it worth it! (She is at Structure Salon by Victoria Gardens in Rancho) I have had long hair (like 3B) and had never cut it short short. The longest was shoulder length. Lora was really nice and excited when I told her I wanted to cut it off! She took my face shape and hair shape both into consideration after I told her what I wanted. We ended up doing a upsidedown? bob where I have some length in the front and the back is short. She cut it dry which was a surprise but Lora obvi knew what she was doing and confidently cut my hair. It is amazing and I'm so glad I went to Lora instead of someone else for a big cut like this. Oh and she even gave me a baggy to put my cut hair in to take home. :) If you are a curly in the IE who wants to do a big cut and is worried about someone messing it up, just call Lori. Soo Worth the price and bike ride!

I've had an abundance of trouble finding a good hairstylist to cut my hair, and after reading reviews on here I made an appointment with Lora. She was able to take me in within the week, and gave me a wonderful haircut, explaining every step of what she was doing clearly and concisely and made sure to explain to me how my hair would look before she cut it. She was absolutely wonderful, charming to speak with, and extremely knowledgeable about all types of curly hair. After cutting my ridiculously thick hair for nearly an hour, Lora still took the time to double check and make sure my hair looked its very best. She is a superb stylist and I would recommend her to anyone with curly hair! I love the way my hair turned out, and she was able to recommend to me exactly what products to use. I trusted her entirely with my hair the whole time, and am extremely pleased with the results.

Hello fellow curly heads! I am here to tell you about the angel that saved my hair and gave me the best hair cut of my life!!!!.....LORA JOHNSON!!!!!(crowd cheering) I can honestly say that at the age of 23 I have never had a good hair cut that I actually loved and felt good about...I have tried the Deva cut a couple times and other hairdressers that claimed to be "curly hair experts" but I have never come across anyone that I truly believed understood my hair....UNTIL NOW!!!! I have very very THICK complicated curly hair...Lora said The objective of my haircut with Lora was to fix my previous experience that I had,not more than a couple months ago, with the Deva cut. I didn't realize what a hot mess the Deva cut had been until she pointed out all the holes and random pieces in the mirror!!!!!! I like to embrace my big hair and I told her I wanted more of a shape rather than just weird long weighed down layers that I had had from the Deva cut. She discussed with me what she envisioned for me and we agreed and told me that she could definitely fix it and work it out. She did not do anything I was uncomfortable with and absolutely accomodated me 100%. I have never had a hairdresser take into account what's best for my face shape, forehead size, and eyebrows to emphasize my features and I definitely think that is what sets her apart from any hair dresser I have ever encountered before. I really believe that she totally and completely understands not only my hair but just all curly hair in general and she could definitely run circles around those Deva hairstylists. She really made me feel comfortable and believe in her skill and trust that she was going to come through for me. SHE MADE HISTORY by giving me the best hair cut I have ever had in my life!!...It is exactly what I wanted with ..BIG and VOLUMINOUS!!!! I am definitely going to be her client for the rest of my life!!!! Also she charges $80 which might be a lot for some people but I had been used to paying $150 for a Deva Cut so you know I was ecstatic about that price. She is not located at the Riccolo Salon anymore she is at Salon Demure at 1395 Foothill blvd, La Verne, California. I would recommend her to anyone with curly hair because LORA JOHNSON is the TRUTH!!!!!! :)))))))) <3<3<3<3<3LOVE U LORA!!!!!!!!!!!

Guy review: Today Lora Johnson gave me the best haircut of my life. Lora is the real life Edward Scissorhands. Lora is to curly hair what Dr. Dre is to hip hop. I had a huge uneven Jewfro and I needed to go to the hair ER to see a hair doctor. Lora made me feel like a movie star. I never thought it was possible to cut my hair the way she did. She could tell I am on a tight budget so she taught me how to use products I can afford. What more can I say?

I had my hair cut by Lora a couple of days ago, and it was literally the best haircut of my life. I've been put through the wringer with my thin but extremely voluminous curls, from inexperienced stylists who cut my hair wet to alleged "curl experts" in Beverly Hills who cut my hair unevenly, pushed their products relentlessly, and charged well upwards of $200. Lora was very professional, down to earth, and warm. She put me at ease, as I was very nervous about getting my hair cut (it had been over a year and a half due to trauma from my last experience). She took the time to explain to me what was wrong with my current cut and what she wanted to do to it based on my curl type and the shape of my face. I also let her know that I was looking for something a bit less safe than my original cut and we brainstormed to get my hair to where I wanted it. Overall, the experience was better than I had hoped, I love my hair and feel confident, and I have already received compliments from complete strangers, one telling me that I look like a movie star. I uploaded a picture of the cut as my profile photo, as there is no option to add one here. Thank you, Lora, for giving me my lion's mane!

I had my hair cut by Lora yesterday and had to review the experience right away. This was literally the best haircut I've ever received in my entire life. I have been through the wringer with my thin but extremely voluminous curls, from inexperienced scissor-happy hair dressers to so-called 'curl experts' in Beverly Hills who gave me an uneven cut, pushed their products on me, and charged me well upwards of $200. Lora was so professional, friendly, and communicative. We talked for a while about what she had in mind for my hair based on the mistakes she saw and the shape of my face. I agreed with her, but also voiced that I'd like something a bit different, and she listened all the way, giving me the full, lion's mane of curls that I'd envisioned. I waited a day to review because I wanted to wash and dry the cut at home to see how it came out when I did it, but it honestly looks amazing. My curls are perfect. I will not ever go to another stylist. I Highly recommend Lora if you are traumatized from past experiences and are so scared to have another stylist touch your hair that you haven't had your hair cut in years. That was me before yesterday! I have uploaded a picture of my cut as my profile photo as I don't think photos are allowed to be posted here.

Lora is just AWESOME!!! She is so down to earth and super nice. She loves natural and curly hair. I went to see her after reading the reviews about her on here and I must say I am sooo glad I did. I had a lot of damage for pressing and coloring my hair. I told her I wanted something short and cute that fits my face. Before doing anything she made sure I was sure about how short I was willing to go. I honestly didn't care if she chopped it all off...I just wanted to start over with the healthy hair I mistreated for so long. She measured my face, and assessed my bone structure. She explained to me everything she did while she did it. When she started cutting my hair she went in like a pro! Her scissors were literally flying every where! She is LEGIT!!!! I love Lora, and when its time for me to even out the fab-fierce style she gave me I'm sooo going back to her. The salon is really nice too! The people are great!

I have been natural for almost a year but always wore my hair in a ponytail or a bun. After reading a lot of natural hair blogs and getting addicted to Naturally Curly, I finally decided I needed to make a change and actually embrace my curls and wear them down! I was very apprehensive because I knew I had breakage in the back of my head from always wearing my hair up and I didnt know how that would affect my haircut. After seeing so many great reviews about Lora, I decided she would be the one who would cut my hair. She was very friendly and sweet and took about 20 minutes to discuss with me my hair texture, my facial structure and my comfort level on the haircut. She would not start the cut until she knew I was completely okay with the decision, which made me feel great when it came time for the chop! We agreed to take it gradual and cut my bra length hair to shoulder length, still leaving some damaged ends from a long ago relaxer. She worked her product magic and my hair spiraled into beautiful curls right before my eyes! I always thought my hair was wavy but with the dead weight cut off, my hair became a spiral of curls! I loved the length, loved the attention I received and the salon is absolutely gorgeous. I loved my experience with Lora and will be sticking with only her!

Lora was fantastic. I found her by chance on this website and drove 30 minutes to have her cut my crazy hair. I have had so many bad haircuts in the past and have been so disappointed that I was a little nervous. Add to that the fact that I don't have half as much hair I used to and I found myself crying in Lora's chair when she asked me what my issues were with my hair. Lora ended up crying with me and promising that she was going to fix it...and she did. Her cut was meticulous, had a purpose and I was kept well informed every step of the way. I held a mirror so I could see exactley what she was doing as she explained why she was doing it. I felt like she genuinely cared about me and my struggles. She understood that my hair was an emotional part of me, not just a physical part of me. It's been 3 days of good hair days so far! Thank you Lora!

I just got back from my appointment with Lora and want to add my two cents. I chose to go to Lora instead of a Devachan or Ouidad salon in LA not only due to the price but also based on the reviews. My hair type is 3C/4A, and shoulder length, and everyone always wants to straighten my hair or offer a relaxer (NO THANKS!) so I was pleasantly surprised by Lora's "philosophy." We both love big hair, natural texture, and really saw eye-to-eye as far as expectations of my final look. My consultation consisted of her analyzing my face shape and the shape of my hair. She gently brushed out my curls and really saw the perimeter shape, and when she started cutting, she gave my hair a flattering shape for my face and personality. She essentially shaped my afro, almost like a barber would do for a man, but did so in such a classy, knowledgeable manner for this 30-year-old single girl. Another reviewer commented that even though Lora is White, as a Black customer one can be skeptical. I have to say that Lora knows Black hair (and other hair types, I'm sure) and I will definitely be visiting her again, but not for another 6 months-1 year as this haircut was great and will allow my hair to grow nicely. The only thing that I didn't like was how she styled it, but I think an actual style might have cost extra. She put some product in and tousled it around, but the texture and health of my hair are very noticeable. Highly recommended!

I heard about Lora on this website back in 2009. I went and saw her and loved her haircut. She looks at your face and helps you determind a good style determined by your hair type, face shape, and personality. This helps me especially because having curly hair can often times be quite a challenge. I recently went back and had a totally different experience... better than the first time. I have recently experienced dermatitis on my scalp and have not known what to do about it because unlike dandruff that flakes off, the dermatits sticks in a waxy form and clumps together so that it is hard to get off. Besides giving me a great cut this time, Lora helped me to get rid of the clumping, gave me a scalp treatment for it, and gave me advice for what to do at home so that it heals. She told me that taking baths instead of showers will help my scalp because when it is soaking water and air are "natural healers". When taking a shower, the water is not getting a chance to soak in the scalp properly. I have been dealing with this for the past 8 months or so, and she has been the first one who really helped me find a solution for this. I have heard that a lot of people deal with this who have curly hair (especially when it is coarse) so hopefully this helps you. I highly recommend Lora because she takes her times with you, gives a FANTASTIC cut (I got tons of compliments going to work today) and she really does care about how a great cut can impact your everyday life because even though she only gets an hour or so with you, she knows that you will be the one looking in the mirror at yourself everyday. Please give her a call if you are looking for a great hairstylist. =)

I've been seeing Lora Johnson to cut my very curly wild hair for the last 4 years. She is always FABULOUS and I'm always VERY VERY happy with my haircut. She cuts it dry like curly hair should be and always gives me good advice on what to do with my curlys so they don't eat my head. I drive from Pasadena to go to her about every 4 months and really I could wait longer because she cuts my hair so well that it looks good for about 6 to 8 months before I really need to get it cut again. She also did a great dye job on my turning my brown hair red and I LOVE it. I may stay a red head till I die. My only critique is that she is very religious and some people may be put of by all the Jesus and God talk. Personally I'm not religious but she does such a good job on my hair that I'm willing to listen. It would bother me more if she tried to convert me from my atheist ways but since she doesn't I'm ok with it as long as my hair looks good when I leave. Lora tends to get booked but she is worth the wait especially for curly haired girls. If you can't get in with her, Crystal Bell is also very good and will give you a scalp massage to die for.

This is in response to chromacurl and her scathing review of Lora. I've been getting my hair cut by Lora for, get this, 20 years and I wouldn't even think of letting anyone else touch it. Not only is she incredibly talented but has a heart of gold. On a couple of occasions she cut my hair for free as I couldn't afford it at the time. I still pay less than her going rate and she never says a thing about it and gets me in at the last moment. I'm a guy that doesn't have curly hair but I care about my looks and my hair definitely has issues that Lora works with me on. I too, have had Lora try to encourage me to make a change and, being fairly conservative in that department, I politely decline. She's never forced her will upon me. Sounds to me that chromacurl took out her problems on Lora. She did what you asked and you didn't like the results and took it out on her. You have serious issues. I know a bad cut can turn you against the world but you should take responsibility for your part (no pun intended) in what happened. I can't imagine that many people go on this site (no offense) but I could be wrong. You yourself said you'd been having Lora cut your hair for 4 years and it sounds like YOU came up with the change in style, not Lora. I hope anyone reading this will realize that a psycho's on the loose and trying to damage the reputation of one of the nicest, most talented (and pretty hot, in my opinion) hair stylists around. It saddens me because I know Lora personally and have been going to her for about 7 years. She is always going to do what you want. It sounds to me like you had a bad day and took it out on her. How do you go from 4 years of going to someone you trust and know who genuinely cares about you. Then slandering her for a cut you asked for and in your perspective is bad. For someone who says "they don't care what others think", how hypocritical of you to sway others by writing a review. This shows me that you really do care. Even in Lora's worst day her skills are never compromised and I think you are over critical and mean in your review. Very truly, One who has the most difficult curly hair Lora has ever had to manage.

Lora Johnson is the best hair stylist that I have ever come across. No joke. I have never felt so comfortable while sitting in the chair, waiting to get my hair cut & styled--AND enjoyed it, to boot! I was very nervous when walking into the salon since I did not know what to expect. Once I saw Lora and her friendly, cheery disposition, though, I knew I was in good hands and my worries disappeared. I really like how she measured the width and length of my face to determine what hairstyles suit my face shape. No other stylist has ever done that for me before, so I was incredibly pleased. After all, I learned something new about myself (I did not know that my face shape is a perfect oval; I always thought it was a diamond!). Not only that, but she is a great listener! I had about a million questions to ask her, and she was very patient with me (which I am very grateful for!!), listening carefully, and answering ALL of them in a way so that I can fully understand it. Before she proceeded to cut my hair, she explained everything that she was planning to do for my hair. That just made me even happier because, again, no one has ever done that for me before. I was able to get a better understanding of what her vision was for me at that moment, and she made certain that we were both on the same wavelength before she actually cut it. The end result? It saddens me to write this review, but out of respect for other curlies, I feel that I have to share my latest (and LAST) experience with Lora Johnson, currently at Ricciolo Salon in LaVerne. Lora has been cutting my hair for about 4 years now, and has always been very kind and patient. She brought my hair back from a series of butchered cuts, but today, she was the butcher. I have lots of fine 2b/3a hair, and until yesterday, it was very long. The last cut Lora gave me had a lot of slithering, and though I loved it, I was ready for a look that was a little less rock and roll. As soon as I sat down, Lora told me that she was sick of my hair, that I'd had the same cut for too long, my hair was boring, and what she really wanted to do was give me a chin length wedge. I should have left right then and there, but because I'd had several successful cuts from Lora, I ignored my instincts and stayed. BIG mistake. The first thing I asked for was that the back be cut into more of a V shape. It was pretty straight in the back, and this made the hair angle out at the ends, giving that A-shape, or inverted triangle that curlies and wavies hate. She was reluctant, but did what I asked. But then she seemed to think that because of that V, the rest of my hair needed to be severely layered to match, that extreme layering was the "only option that made sense, structurally." Though I had asked for her to cut no more than one-inch of length, my hair is now 4-6 inches shorter. The bangs are more like a short layer that goes almost all the way around to the back of my head. I asked for long layers, not a long shag. I told her that I hated it, that I looked like a dude. (Seriously, I look like Geddy Lee circa 1978.) She kept repeating that a V in the back was a radical, extreme statement, and that she simply cut the rest to match. She told me I would get lots of compliments, and that other people would like my "unusual" (aka ugly) cut. I told her that I don't care what anyone else thinks, that this is MY HAIR. Lora did the exact opposite of what I asked. At one point I asked her, "What do you think you're doing?" and she ignored me. I left very, very unhappy, and will never go back. Ladies, don't EVER let a stylist tell you what looks good on you. If YOU don't think you look good, then you don't. I really regret not walking out when Lora started telling me I needed a radical change. I LIKE my hair long and layered, and if that's "boring" to some, then too bad. It's MY hair. Also, it's not a good idea to whine about how you just don't have the clientele that you would like. Maybe this is WHY Lora doesn't have enough clients. It's not cool, and it's certainly unprofessional, for a stylist to tell a client that they are bored with their hairstyle. It's one thing if the client asks for a change, or for suggestions, but I did not. Now I'm looking at 4-6 months with my hair in a bun, and probably a year to get my hair back to where it was before I went to Lora Johnson, and I have to find a new stylist.

Not only is she a total pro, and does the world's best highlights, but she'll talk you out of a haircut if she doesn't think you need it! Tell her what you want long-term and she'll work with you, and if she thinks your idea of perfection won't work for you, she'll tell you. Isn't that what you'd want? She's a professional and she takes her work seriously, but she's also a ton of fun and we have a huge giggle every time I see her. A fabulous stylist, yes, but a wonderful, warm and sincere person too.

I love this woman! She checks out face shape, determines my personal best look that flatters me! She listens to my concerns and my likes/ dislikes/and my nightmares and then expresses her creative mindset for me and what might be a good prospect cut for the future! Not a scary experience at all like I have had. Usually they all want to cut it off or, get me wet then talk and you know how hair changes when you wash it. She doesn't do that. Lora evaluates where I am at and we talked about where we should go with my hair before washing. She used a Bumble and Bumble product for shampooing then after cut styled with Enjoys curling lotion. I am very happy and feel cared for as well as listened to. She is average price I feel and worth it. The salon is beautiful and NOT pretentious!

WOW!! When you call the phone number that is Lora's cell phone! She isn't in Claremont anymore, but wherever she is, GO TO HER! She is AWESOME! Very personable, you feel like she is your long lost friend and she REALLY wants you to look your best! I went in with a HORRIBLE cut. She told me what she had in mind to make it healthy again, and the final goal. She went by the shape of my face and what I had to work with (NOT MUCH!!). She spent about an hour with me making sure I understood what she was doing and HOW to make it look the SAME at home! I LOVE my hair! I haven't had compliments on my hair in years. I am NOW getting many, many compliments! I'm 47yrs old and believe me, to have both men and women complimenting my hair and saying how GOOD my hair looks and how much YOUNGER I look is a GREAT ego booster! I would recommend her OVER Ouidad, whom I wanted to go to! Thank you Lora! You're the BEST! I will see you in 6 months! Brooke

Lora definitely gets around town for hair. She is NOT at Papillon anymore. She is still in the upland area, however. Lora will cut your hair beautifully in any town. She is worth the time and cut. I am the most picky hair person I know and Lora can make it happen. I make the drive two times a year, let's face it we need a break from all the messed up cuts from the past. These cuts last and grow out beautifully. She suggests combining the product AG, the curl cream, with the spray gel. Awesome.

I've never been happier with my cut than I am now!! Lora really knows what she is doing. She takes into account several factors before cutting your hair such as face shape, daily activities, etc. She cut my hair dry which I've never had done before, and I was shocked at the curl that appeared after she styled it. She doesn't push products, which I also appreciate. She was extremely professional and very, very nice. I can't wait to go back and get my color and highlights done by Lora. Also, she said this cut should last at least 6 months!! What a deal...definitely worth the drive! I highly recommend her to anyone with any hairstyle, especially curly hair!

Everything that has been written about Lora is true. I went to her after a bad haircut grew out into the most awkward of "styles". She really does look at the shape of your face to see what will work best and discusses it with you before hand. I love that she cuts dry, although like the previous review said, she did comb it out first. All in all, Lora gave me the best cut I've had in a long time and I will make a point of driving from San Diego to her salon from now on. If you live in the LA area, do yourself a favor and go to Lora. Also, the AG Coilup cream they have at that salon is fantastic (see reviews under products).

Lora Johnson (formerly of Hotheads in Pasadena & Escape Salon in Claremont) is now at Papillon on Upland and I must say that every single review for her from her previous locations is spot on. She's a great stylist who definitely takes her time. This was the first time I've ever had a stylist actually look at the shape of my face to determine what cut would look best. I was pretty surprised to see that she's a straightie but trust me, she knows hair. Her slithering technique is something I've never heard of and it was a bit nerve racking to see, but the result is amazing. She cut my hair dry first and actually pointed out that my right side is 3 inches longer than my left, and my previous cut was with Shai from Capella Salon. Lora combed it out *GASP* before cutting but I don't think it compromised the cut at all. She let me style my own hair with the AG items they have at the salon and diffuse upside down. She's not overly chatty, like she needs to fill in the silence, but she isn't cold. Lora told me to see how my hair feels for a week and if there's any tweaking necessary, she would make it right free of charge. Shai told me that my cut should last for 3 months unless it started to lose its shape earlier. Lora, on the other hand, said that I should be good for 6 months and even though my waves were combed out at the time, just looking at the cut I knew she was right. I'm definitely going back to Lora from now on!!

I found Lora on here and tried her out a week ago. She is different from most hairstylists in a lot of good ways. She explained what works best with my the shape of my face before we even discussed my hair. She always discussed things first and checked with me to make sure that I had the same expectations before proceeding. At all times, she explained what she was doing and what the result would be. I appreciated that she involved me so much in the process. Everything she suggested was exactly what I had in mind, so we really clicked. My curls are back in full force! It's about a half hour drive from Eagle Rock where I live, but it was worth it. I got a great cut and am really happy with it. The only negative thing I would say, is that she conducted some personal business during my cut, which I'm not used to stylists doing. Having said that, she was extremely attentive to me and my needs and I walked out loving my haircut. Maybe she had a lot going on that day. It would only really be a negative if she hadn't given me a great cut. She is also incredibly kind and generous with her time. You can tell she really cares about her clients and that to her, the haircut can really give someone confidence to go out and kick a$$ in the world, for lack of a better expression. So, all in all, I am very happy to have found her and will be going back. One more thing. Some stylists cut your hair for the time being, meaning that they don't take the care to make the cut last for several months, so that you have to come back often, which is better for their bottom line. Lora was such a perfectionist, and made sure there were no missed areas, and said that I probably wouldn't need to come back for six months. That's what I mean when I say she is generous and really cares about YOUR needs, not just hers. She's a real gem!

Lora, previously at Hot Heads in Pasadena has moved her professional, friendly demeanor and sexy, rockin' haircuts to the Escape Salon in Claremont. She's friendly but not overly chatty. She knows how we curly girls have been traumatized by horrible haircuts in the past, and proceeds with caution and patience. Doesn't push products like so many other stylists do. In fact, she asks you to bring your own curly friendly products. Cuts hair dry, and her slithering technique set my curls free. As long as Lora is cutting hair, I will be her loyal customer.

I have been going to Lora for a couple of years now and would not consider alloying anyone else to cut my hair. For years I scheduled consultations with stylists who had naturally curly hair thinking that they would understand my hair’s needs. Some were cold, condescending and reluctant to explain what techniques they used. When I asked them if they knew how to ‘slither’ layers, many had never heard of that technique before. Not so with Lora. She was kind and patient and explained thoroughly in lay terms what she would do given my particular texture and explained why my current cut was not bringing out the best in my hair. She suggested ‘slithering’ my hair and at that point, I had complete confidence in her. Many stylists that I had been to cut off way too much of my hair and the layers did not blend at all. At times they seemed to be inventing things as they went along. Lora does not do that. Not only is she able to bring out the beauty in your hair and delivers a great cut, she actually gives you different options based on your hair type, face shape and features. She really cares to create a style that makes you look your best and takes into account all these elements to do that. I’ve been to so many stylists and I’ve never had one this intelligent, thorough and creative before. She truly has a gift. What’s more, she actually truly enjoys working with curly hair and understands it like no one else. Don’t be afraid that she has straight hair, you will be in caring and very capable hands with Lora. Do yourself a huge favor, and schedule an appointment with her. You will not be disappointed.

Lora is amazing! I have had my struggles in the past with trying to find a hairdresser that I could totally trust. I have very thick, curly hair and would often leave in tears from past hairdresser's who would not understand my hair and just chop it. I always wanted long hair but gave up until I met Lora. She took me from short, thick bushy hair to long beautiful, amazing hair. Lora knows her stuff and you will never be disappointed. I have followed her from Pasadena. The $80 is well worth it!

Now when it comes to curly hair this woman knows her stuff. She has been doing hair for many years, and owner of two hair salons. Lora really considers who you are and what hairstyle best suits your face. This has never happened with me before. I just love that about her. I dont believe it is all about money either; she is more concerned with the end results of satisfaction than the bill. I get my haircut once a year and $80.00 may seem expensive but once a year to look good is worth it. Kinda like getting a great pair of shoes. Well worth it. Be prepared for kindness too. No pretenses here, just plain ole down to earth. Enjoy.
