I've been sampling from curly hair stylists for several years now (due to a life on the road) and I've generally been very pleased with the results. However, my cut with Colie was kind of, "meh." It was a $60 cut that didn't really differentiate from other $30 cuts I've had. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice cut. But I don't really see what the extra $30 bought me. Also, I'm not entirely sure how different salons structure their product sponsorship, but I've found that other curly stylists don't spend a lot of time pushing one brand (maybe it's because they're more often independent stylists?), but Colie spent the entire time hawking for Redken products. It's hard for me to really trust a stylist's opinion when the answer to every question is "Redken" even after I tell her that I'm not really interested in spending that much money on my hair products. It made it hard for me to relax and enjoy the process.

The best thing about naturally curly hair is how it looks great with no effort, if you have the right cut! After 5 years of trying to grow out my naturally curly hair and let it move and flow like a movie star, as it should, I finally found Brad and Hybrid salon. He understood what I was trying to do with keeping the length and taking out some volume so the hair had a nice shape and movement. Their new salon location by the Sequoya branch library off Midvale is very convenient now. I also prefer their color line over the Aveda line I had experienced before. My hair has a more natural and vibrant color that lasts longer and also has less chemical smell. I get stopped all the time to hear compliments about my hair now. I feel happier and more confident and carefree, like a cliche curly-haired girl! Brad is the best, IMHO, but Hybrid specializes in movement cuts, so anyone there should be just as good. Even my friend without curly hair goes there to have more volume in her flat hair. Hybrid stylists bring out the natural beauty in you. It's worth the cost, because you save styling time not wrestling with your hair and you save money because you don't need too much control product to maintain your style.

I just received the best haircut of my life from Colie at Hybrid Salon! I only wish I would have found her sooner. I have type 3b/3c curly hair and went natural about 8 years ago after years of relaxing. It has been a process trying to find someone who knows how to work with my hair type and today I finally found that someone. Colie asked me a lot of questions about my hair story, how I like to style, maintenance, etc. and spent a lot of time with me. I did not feel rushed at all, or that she was trying to upsell me. I felt she generally wanted to get to know me and my hair and make recommendations to improve my day to day style. She taught me quite a bit about products, styling options, how much I should be washing (or not washing) my hair, how much product to use and how to apply it, etc. Not to mention, she took the time to SHOW me what she was talking about, give me an opportunity to practice, and also finger twirled/styled my hair so I could go back to work. I have never liked my hair walking out of a salon before and often have to go home and wash and do it myself afterward, but not today. I told her "This is the beginning of a beautiful friendship". Do not think twice - go to her! Go now!

I'll start off by saying that I definitely liked my hair when I left. They were very nice and definitely informed, experienced, and up-to-date with their skills. I can't remember 100% what the name of my stylist was, but it was a woman, who was extremely nice and definitely understood what I wanted. I did have a couple of problems with my overall experience though. I'm a college student, about 21 at the time, and was there by myself for a cut and color (highlights and lowlights). They asked what products I used at the time and I said a few different things, but that one of them was from Aveda. She immediately explained that she would not color my hair unless I did a cleansing shampoo treatment to get the Aveda out of my hair because apparently it would not allow the color to work properly. I felt like I had basically no choice but to agree to this extra-cost hair cleanse and there were a couple other times where I felt I was trying to be up-sold on products and treatments. Being a college student I try not to get my hair done often but have been for awhile so am kind of stuck with upkeep. I know that hair appointments are expensive, since I have been getting my hair done for awhile, but my total was about $250 when I left, which I had not expected. I'm used to more around $100 or $150 at most. So just a heads up on the expense and the fact that I felt kind of conned into getting an extra treatment I didn't want. They're very nice though and I won't deny that I didn't like the cut and color afterwards.

I'm 31 years old and used to have long, thick, curly hair -- I've never met anyone with thicker hair. I became disabled and it became tougher to take care of my hair or go to a salon for a cut. Due to my complicated medical conditions, I am sensitive to noise, light and touch, and I also have multiple chemical sensitivities that make it tough to find hair products I can use. My hair grew so long that, if I pulled it straight, it reached my rear end. It just became too difficult to manage. I hadn't had a serious hair cut since 3rd grade, just trims, and it was time, but I was nervous because back then it just puffed out like an unattractive afro. I searched for salons in my area on NaturallyCurly.com and found a great recommendation for Colie at Hybrid. When I called, it was less than a week before my boyfriend's 40th birthday and ideally I wanted my haircut to happen beforehand as a surprise. Not only did Colie accommodate me (even though I was a brand-new client), but she went above and beyond. She booked an appointment at the latest part of the day when there would be hardly anyone else there (to help control the noise for me) and she paid attention to all my needs. She has a sweet, bubbly personality and was so excited about my cut, going so far as to check in and ask how my boyfriend liked it. She has a lot of experience with curly hair and takes pride in their products and services (they're a Redken salon), as well as highly respects the salon owners. I planned to donate my hair to Locks for Love (I gave six ponytails, each around 10"!) and was pleasantly surprised to find out the salon takes care of everything. The salon has a cool vibe and after my cut, she gave me cards with special deals and a "sign-up your friends" promotion for even further discounts. I will definitely be going back to see her to maintain my new, cute short cut, for which I've received SO many compliments. It's not puffy at all! I do miss my long hair -- it was one of my defining qualities -- but it's so much easier to manage now. I hope this review is helpful and I want to extend an extra thanks to Colie and to user ttscott for his review.

I walked out of salons with a cut they didn't put thought into, and in the end, just didn't really care about. I heard about Hybrid Salons on the radio and that they specialized in 'curly hair' so I called and gave them a shot. JUST what I always asked for and she cut my hair with my part on the side, how I wear it. [other hairstylists would cut my hair with a middle part, and then move it. Why you ask? I have no idea.] anyway, it's been love ever since, and I cannot imagine anybody else cutting my hair. She listened to my problems, she asked questions, and really cared about the ending product. Then she washed my hair and gave it a good conditioning. (By the way, the wash was fantastic with a great scalp massage!) When we returned to the chair she started cutting away. At first I was worried that she was cutting a lot of hair, but after she dried it with a diffuser I was amazed! I hadn't lost much length, but my hair was soooo curly! And no triangle head in sight! After giving me a few instructions she set me out into the world. To preface this review, I would like to mention that I'm a bi racial (black/white with a Jessica Alba complexion)guy with type 3b hair. Think blond Shirley Temple curls. I usually walk in to salons and immediately apologize at the look of dismay I get from stylists who I can instantly see have never had to deal with 1. a man with Shirley Temple curls, and 2. biracial hair with blond Shirley Temple curls. I usually leave with an OK at best cut but usually only a trim I spent $50 for because no one has the gall to just go in there and do something with my mop. Well Hybrid amazed me. From the moment I walked into the salon I was immediately greeted with great service and given a diet coke (they know the key to my heart). Colie met with me only a few minutes later with a warm greeting and immediately shot down my now reflex apology for my hair and said I should never apologize for it. Now I'm a very easy patron and said that she could do anything with my hair that struck her fancy and it would probably be better than any of the half-hearted cuts I've received before. She immediately jumped in with ideas and suggestions for maintaining my curls in general and later maintaining the cut. They all were perfectly explained and made sense. We chatted while she worked and she is ridiculously personable. Now, I cannot even begin to describe how fantastic my haircut is. It is by far the best cut I've ever gotten, it's easy to manage, it has fabulous body, and it will grow in well between cuts. Besides that, she actually washed and styled my hair for me IN the salon! That is something I've always had to do at home to see how the cut turned out. I talked with Julie, who has the most bubbly personality, and told her I've never had a "bad" haircut (anything that adds layers to my curls I thought was a good thing). She told me that it's impossible to have a "bad" haircut when every haircut I've had has been a bad haircut. She was so right. I'm not scared to wear my hair down anymore; it actually has bounce to it and isn't weighed down on top. The day after I left her salon I got compliments from coworkers and friends about my hair. I have gotten stopped by strangers on the street telling me how much they love my haircut. It's all because of Julie. She is the ONLY person I will let touch my hair. She has this other sense about curly hair - I don't even need to tell her what I want done to my hair anymore because she knows the best way to cut it to make it look flawless and super easy to take care of.

Everything I want to write seems a bit redundant at this point. So many people have already said much of what I'd like to about Julie. I went there today with some pretty sad-looking curls and left with hands-down the greatest hairstyle I've ever had. If you are living in the Madison area and not going to Julie you are most definitely cheating yourself.

I went to see Julie after reading recommendations on this site. I highly recommend seeing her. She is professional and highly knowledgeable about curly hair and products. She listened to what I wanted and I trusted her to do what she thought would look good. I am really happy with the result. She is awesome!!

I have spent many years going to premier salons in Madison only to leave feeling frustrated that my hair never looked right. My curls turned to clumps and frizz when I was left on my own. I wondered if I would ever love my hair like everybody told me I should. Then I went to naturallycurly.com and found out about Julie at Hybrid. She made me feel comfortable right from the start. Julie explained the cutting process for curly hair and understood my dreaded clumps. I left with a great hair cut finally appreciating my curls. I even scheduled a color appointment! I think my search has ended for the perfect stylist.

What can I say about Tony other than I wish I had him living in my bathroom so that he could do my hair everyday! I have been getting my super curly hair cut, styled and occasionally colored by Tony for over four years now and I don't plan on going anywhere else. In fact, I lived on the West Coast for two years and flew back to see him! I have had a life filled with nightmare hair cuts to the point where I used to wait close to a year to go to a salon because that's how long it took to grow out the mistakes AND get my nerve up to try again. Now, I can't wait to go and see Tony every 10 weeks! He's not only good at cutting curly hair, but he is also great at styling for special events like weddings. He's a ton of fun to talk to and he knows what he's doing! Haircuts are like therapy for me now.

I've struggled most of my adult life to find a style that I like that also works with my curls. Then I found Tony! He consistently gives me great cuts that really show off my curls. I also like to change my haircut frequently and he always gives me a stylish cut. I always leave feeling like a diva, but even better are the compliments I get on my haircut (and curls) throughout the duration of the cut.

I went in yesterday to see Julie after reading the previous reviews. She does really good color. I had her trim my hair and it looks really good. I will most likely go back. She seems to have in depth knowledge on just how to cut curly and thick hair. I feel she might be the one to help me make a change into a different style!!
