Finding a good hair stylist in New York is hard; especially if you have curly hair. After living in New York for 2 years, I was tired of getting bad hair cuts. Looking up different salons was exhausting - but when I came across Leslie, I knew I had to try her. I couldn't be more pleased! She is kind, professional, personable and really listens to what you want. Before going in, Leslie really likes to know what type of curls you have. She asks for pictures of your curls and what your expectations are. You truly feel that your time at the salon is for you. She makes sure you don't leave until you are happy with what she has done. I asked for color, which I was nervous about and she reassured me every step of the way that it would look great. I'm so beyond happy with my cut and color. I'm excited to return for my second cut and see how my hair continues to transform!

My highest recommendation!!!  Leslie Ellen surprised me with her honesty. She looked at my crappy looking hair, said my haircut was fine and I didn't need a haircut - even though that was what I was booked for! She said my method of coloring my hair was killing it and that no haircut from ber or anyone else would help as long as I continued what I was doing.

Well - I was astonished. She was talking me out of paying her for a haircut! Then she told me how I could continue to color my hair without more damage. Long story short - she gave me a clarifying shampoo to get rid of the bad chemicals from the color and gave me a haircut to clean up the damaged parts - which turned out fabulous.

Leslie Ellen - thank you!!!!! I recommend her without reservation to anyone in NYC. By the way, she has perfect 5/out of 5 recommendations on Yelp, Google, and here on nc.com. (I will cross post this to our forum on salons).

Recently on vacation a woman stopped me and said, "I'm a hairstylist and your cut is amazing!" My cut has evolved and been updated over the 2 years and I completely trust Ellen at this point to make me look great!  I will keep saying, if you love your curls, you will love Leslie-Ellen. This month marks a year that I've been seeing Leslie Ellen, and I couldn't be happier, because there is no one else like her. I had been looking forever for a stylist that I could trust, build a relationship with, and return to again and again. Leslie is IT! My hair was in such terrible shape when I first came to see her for my birthday last year, and she was so sweet and helpful (and has an AMAZING head of curly hair herself) and listened to what I wanted and didn't want, and then helped me to understand what was realistic so that I could manage my expectations during my growing out phase. From the first phone call where she requested pictures of my hair, to the time she dedicates to looking over my "Hair" Pinterest board with me, to the detailed discussions we have about what I like, what I don't, and how to manage my hair, I have always felt like I am a priority in her chair, and am never rushed. She is so sweet and fun, and a true miracle worker. She was 100% upfront with me when I first told her what I wanted to do, and while I was skeptical that it would take a year to grow in hair healthy enough to pull of the style that I want, she couldn't have been more correct. My hair is in the best condition it's ever been in. Though the length hasn't changed much yet (That's phase 2), watching it come back to shiny, healthy, bouncy life over the past year has been such a treat. Leslie is patient, talented, wonderful and creative, and I can't recommend her highly enough. GO SEE HER NOW. Thank you Leslie!! xoxoxo

Let me just start off by saying that Leslie was all of my prayers answered. I had gone to a curly hair salon in the past and was scarred to put it lightly (so much so that I cut my own hair when I needed a trim just so I wouldn't have anyone else near my curls). Obviously that didn't work out for long as my hair became frizzy, tangled, and my bouncy curls loosened. I started searching for salons and that's when Lovely Leslie came to the rescue. She listened to my curlstory, provided me with her feedback, asked the right questions (only a curl doctor would know what to highlight), told me what our plan of action was to see if I was ok with it, and once everything was talked through she got to working. The result was everything she promised and more! Never knew a haircut can do so much for my curls which automatically looked springier, voluminous, and frizz free. For the first time in my life I didn't feel like I wasted money with a hairstylist and am actually looking fwd to my next apt. Feels good to finally find someone who cares about my curls as much as I do. Thank you Leslie!!!

I haven't had a relaxer in over a year and my hair was at a stage where it was 'transitioning' and I had quite a bit of natural curls but still had relaxed ends. My hair was short and was not looking it's best. I was desperate for someone to take care of my hair so I was so thankful when I stumbled upon this website and discovered this salon. The reviews sold me and so I booked an appointment. First off, Leslie is such a sweet person. She was different (in the best way possible) from any hair stylist I have ever came across. When I went to her salon she voiced how excited she was to do my hair which excited me and gave me high hopes that she will style it to my liking. I told her to cut a whole bunch of my hair off, since I was anxious to start fresh with my hair. She was mindful of how much she was cutting, always sure to ask me if I was okay with the haircut. In the end, I loved the hair cut so much and I just feel so free with my hair! It's like a weight has been lifted cause my hair is finally in a state I'm satisfied with and it's all thanks to Leslie. She was gave me great tips about my hair also. You MUST get your hair done by her!

Leslie Ellen is amazing. I've never ever in my life had someone ask me what I wanted to be done to my curly hair and actually listened and did it with such skill. My hair was badlly chopped in the front, shredded on the sides and my hair had no volume in the back. After seacrhing through some sites I came upon some amazing reviews for Leslie on NaturallyCurly.com and decided to give her a call.

So, first, I called her to schedule an appointment and it actually turned into a consultation which I appreciated immensly. The second she asked me to text her pictures I nearly kissed her through the phone. It felt like I was talking to my friend that I knew for years. She took such a genuine interest in my bad hair cut situation that it blew me away. I sent her pics so she had an idea of what she'd be working within the days to come.

Second, I was an hour early, which to most people is a turn off, she took it as an opportunity to give me a deep condition and glance over before cutting my hair. I showed her a picture of what I would like my hair to look like and she rocked it. My hair looked better than the picture. We talked about products, she gave me tips and tricks and we talked about her background and her career.

Third, we scheduled a follow-up appointment as she informed me that it would take a few cuts to correct the bad hair cut I came in with... but if you ask me I feel like this cut alone is a fix. I guess as a stylist she can see the full potential of my curls.. so I faithfully booked my appointment. Then we hugged it out and I left.

Today I went to Leslie because I needed ALOT of help with my curls in which not many people have and who else better to cut curly hair then someone with beautiful curls which she has. I came in with matted hair so I gave Leslie and her assistant some work to do. I still feel bad. She has a warm and down to earth personality in which she talks to you to get to know you which i admire. She was at awe with my curls after the needed detangling session. She's very knowledgeable and always willing to make your healthy curls last with tips. She layered my hair to give it some shape and to fit my narrow face. She also taught me how to rake and shake, after dry shake, second day hair tip and even told me that i had to use a heavier product on a small section since it was a different curl pattern. After all was done, she asked me how I liked my cut. If I remember I calmly said I liked it. She wasn't sold on it because she didn't see much of a reaction and couldn't gauge. Sincerely, I had reassured her. I've been neglecting my curls, now that I have a guideline on how to care for them correctly I will do right by them. I'm very grateful. I already booked my 3 month trim. She does well not only with curly, but straight hair also. Trust me, girl knows her stuff!

This is an overdue review! I went to Leslie for the first time in September. As I entered the salon she promised me she could change my hair, health and look-wise, and she definitely kept her promise! I showed her a photo of a hairstyle I liked while adding she can do whatever she thinks is best. Oh my gosh, I was so pleased with the result. I couldn't stop shaking my head back and forth, seeing how my curls actually LOOKED like curls. Am I going back? Heck yes! Should you go as well? Double Heck Yes!

I've now been to Leslie Ellen twice and am twice thrilled! So, the basics are that she gave me a great cut both times, and while that is a big deal enough for a curly girl, I'll go back for more reasons than just a good cut. The first time I went I had not had my 3b/a curls cut professionally in over 2 years....this is not my longest avoidance of the shears, but a pretty average wait for me. I am one of the many walking wounded with more bad cuts I can shake a wide-toothed comb at. No one ever listened to my pleas to not cut the top too short...the bottom layers are 3a and just will not curl up like the top, just one of the many struggles I had to grit my teeth against to go get a hair cut. So I decided to try Leslie Ellen after I read "clairewithcurls" review below. Leslie Ellen began with a standard consultation...what do you want to do....and my usual response was I'm not sure was met with a wonderfully honest and perceptive response. She noted how my hair did not reflect the person I seemed to express with my clothing, jewelry, etc. She noted my ambivalence and said we could just 'clean it up' or....and then proceeded to show me a shape that would match who I was. I knew I could trust her. Her observations of me as a whole person, not just a mass of curls, her attention to the variations in my curl pattern, and her acceptance of where I draw the line (no coloring, no straightening) earn her top grades. The shop she is in is less than perfect, but look, it's about getting the best cut and care so you can walk around with a great look for months. I'm happy to lose the bells and whistles of the fancy 'curly' salons for a great cut. Oh, and while I did go back after 10 weeks, my hair still looked good. I've never before left a cut and didn't have to restyle, trim something, etc. I walked in and had my dream of a hair stylist telling me what would work with my hair, my style, my life. Amazing!

I came in for a cut with Leslie, it turned out to be my best haircut ever! I have 3b curls, and it's always nerve-wracking to try a new stylist as things can go horribly wrong. From the start, it was clear that Leslie knew exactly what she was doing. She was able to take pictures I had of an inverted bob I'd seen online, and combine that with elements of a previous cut I had really liked to create a brand-new, exciting, stylish look that was personalized for me. I also liked that Leslie didn't over-complicate things by trying to sell me particular products or teach me "patented techniques" for my hair. At other salons, this kind of thing made me feel as if curly hair is some kind of overwhelming project that I could only navigate with one particular brand or approach. Leslie still gave me all the information I needed to be able to style my new cut at home, but I liked her more approachable, common-sense attitude. I was also very happy with the service. Leslie was able to schedule me in for the week I called, and encouraged me to email or call her at any point before my appointment with my thoughts or questions. When I arrived, she talked to me about what I was looking for from my cut and looked at some photos I had brought for ideas. She was interested in in hearing exactly what I thought and what I was looking for, but she also gave her own, very helpful, input. She was also clearly invested in me personally, and was talking about how I could continue to give feedback and try new things as our relationship develops if I wanted to keep coming back. This was a welcome change from bigger "curly-expert" salons, where I had always felt so anonymous! The atmosphere in the salon in general was friendly and comfortable, and Dominick, who washed my hair, was also lovely. I had a coupon, but even without it the total price for the cut would have been $125, which is really reasonable for a curly hair stylist as great as Leslie. Will be back for sure!
