When I moved to the Indy area, I tried this salon--and Erin--based upon the recommendations here. I want to say first that everyone was very, very pleasant . However, compared to the curly specialists who have cut my hair elsewhere (in St. Louis and Chicago), these people know absolutely nothing about the kind of curl care for naturally hair that has been typical in my experience! My overall assessment is that they well may be very good for someone who is happy with a more aggressively styled curly look, but if you want a natural or wash-and-wear style, they have no idea at all how to cut or style for that--let alone what kinds of products might be appropriate. Erin was very nice, and seemed quite knowledgeable as we began to discuss my hair and the kind of overall shape that I have had in the past few years--a bob, basically. I wanted about two inches taken off the length and to have it re-shaped slightly so the back was a bit shorter and the front a bit longer, but aside from general clean-up, that was all. The first alarm went off for me when I discovered that Erin only cuts hair wet and has no training in dry cutting. Then, it turned out that (despite a review here from a couple of years ago) they didn't stock any of the products that I would expect from a place specializing in curly hair: everything had sulfates and all but one conditioner had cones, not to mention that they all were very heavily perfumed. After she shampooed and cut my hair (no scalp massage, as a couple of others on the other Urban Gypsy thread noted), she towel dried my hair pretty thoroughly (completely disrupting the curl pattern) and applied the gel we had settled on. She then used her fingers to twirl my hair to set in a new curl pattern. My hair is 2c/3a and has a mind of its own--and it didn't like her curls, which fell apart within about 40 minutes anyway. At that point, I discovered that she had layered my hair very extensively, working on the horizontal and with no regard for the vertical curl pattern, so now my natural curl pattern was completely disrupted by random short and long hairs winding through each curl. It has taken me four months to grow the shortest layers back out to the point where I hope that someone else can give me a reasonable cut. Needless to say, I will NOT be going back to this salon; I'm going to try one of the Deva-trained stylists in Fishers instead.
I have naturally curly hair and like most people with curly hair have had a really bad hair cut in the past. My hair was probably about 2 inches past my shoulders maybe a little longer when I walked into Urban Gypsy holding my pictures of what I wanted and what I didn't want (my bad hair cut pics) I took pictures of Halle Berry when she was pregnant and had a short curly hair cut. She looked adorable. Leah assured me I was in good hands and she knew what she was doing. She was AMAZING! My hair looks FABULOUS, I thought I would cry when I saw it, all good tears of course! I am so excited to show my family and friends my new look! Can't say enough great things! Thanks Leah!!!!!!!!!!!!! ~Christine
A new salon did not know one person, had a great first time very friendly and Leah WOW I knew right away she knew my hair and how to work with it had the BEST cut I've had in 6 years going back next week for color cant wait. OH AND WHEN I walked out of the salon my curls were rocken because LEAH knew how to finish the style have not left a salon feeling that happy in years,
It's true what they say. Leah is great at cutting curly hair. I'm sold.
Leah is AMAZING!! I found Urban Gypsy and Leah because of the awesome reviews on naturallycurly.com and let me tell you, she lived up to the hype! I knew she was going to be awesome when she actually spoke and used terms that only curlies would really use or understand. I truly believe that you can't quite know how to cut curly hair unless you have it yourself and Leah definitely fits the bill! I have never been so happy with a cut before. She cut it very short (which is what I asked for!) and made it very stylish. Also, she blow dryed and styled my hair before I left and actually made it look cute! I would recommend Leah to anyone!! She is a little on the pricy side ($55 for a cut), but I found it to be very worth it!
I found out about Leah on this website. I was desperate to find someone who could cut curly hair. The last stylist I went to thought I had a "great perm". I should have turned around and walked out thr door right there and then. As a curly, we live from bad hair cut to bad haircut. Not any longer now that I have found Leah. I drive 40 miles to see her. But it is worth every dime to not have to stress over "how long will I have to let this one grow out?, before I try to find someone else to cut my hair." I dont know any other curly's that I could ask 'who does your hair?" I am just so happy to have found Leah. I went for my first haircut with her and I will continue to follow her anywhere.
I found out about Leah through this website after reading the terrific reviews about her. I have been a client of Leah's for about a year, and she has done a wonderful job with my hair. She chose a beautiful color and maintains it for me, and she saw me through a major chop with beautiful results. She knows her stuff and every client I have seen leave her chair, including myself, leaves with beautiful curls instead of a frizzy mess. Highly recommend Leah!!!
I have thick, long, naturally curly hair and Leah was the first stylist I've ever been to that knew how to cut and style naturally curly hair. I had a great experience with Leah at Urban Gypsy. Usually, I leave the salon with my hair wet, but I let Leah dry and style it and it looked great! She also gave me great tips on using products. I am a mousse girl, but I purchased the Aquage Defining Gel and I am very happy with it. It is really hard to find an experienced, talented stylist who has naturally curly hair AND is great at cutting and styling naturally curly hair. I definetly recommend Leah.
I went to Leah for the first time and was extremely impressed! I have fine curly hair and have never been able to find someone to cut or style my hair correctly. Not only did she give me an adorable cut, but she could actually style my hair without making it big and frizzy! Leah knows just what your curls need and will guide you through how to style your hair so you get the perfect naturally curly look. You will never want to straighten your hair again after a haircut with Leah! Believe me when I say this... my hair was a mess before she cut it. My previous stylist butchered my hair and left me with "holes" from thinning shears. Leah was able to work with the mess and create a really cute cut for me. Leah isn't just a hairstylist, but a true artist!!! I highly recommend her!
I was always so fearful to get my curly hair cut since I could never find anyone who could do it right. I would only get it cut two to three times a year. When I did get it cut, if I let them style it, I would go home and wash it and restyle or I would just have them put it in a braid. I found this website and read the reviews on Leah Wurm. I had my appointment yesterday. Leah was FABULOUS! She gave me great information! She understood my dilemma and took care of me. She cut AND STYLED my hair. I was amazed!! Leah has long, beautiful curly hair, so she can relate. I have my next appointment scheduled and I'm not afraid anymore. Thanks, Leah!
I have been fighting my curls for 20 years. This year I decided I was going to work with what Mother Nature gave me instead of try to look like everyone else with straight hair. I drove 3 hours to get a haircut with Leah since I had read rave reviews about her on this site. She was worth every ounce of gas to get to her. I have finally embraced my curl, and Leah took the time to teach me how to style it and what products to use. She's great and I have already booked my next appointment.
I've gone to Leah twice now and have a third appointment scheduled. She's great! She understands curly hair woes and she knows how to work with tough hair. I've never left the salon happier than the first time I went to Leah.
I am from Indiana, but currently live in the British Isles. I made an appointment with Leah, after reading about her here, during my visit to Indiana in June and she was great! She was friendly and took a great deal of time with me, even after I embarrassed myself by arriving late for my appointment. She explained what she was doing and even gave me her email address in case I had questions later. My hair looked fantastic when she was finished. I only wish I could do it as well myself. Leah, I don't suppose you'd consider relocating to the Isle of Man? :)
If you're in the Indianapolis area & looking for a reliable, talented, & friendly stylist, Leah can't be beat! It's been about 3 years since I started going to stylists recommended on this website (or suggested by my curly girl counterparts). Many of the folks who have cut my hair have been fantastic, "a cut above" every other stylist I've gone to since birth. I expected something along the same lines when I visited Leah. I'm happy to report that Leah made the other experts look like kids with safety scissors! I particularly appreciated the time she devoted to making sure each snip was appropriate for my curls (cut while wet, cut while dry!). This woman knows her stuff & is enthusiastic to share ideas for making your curls all they can be with styling tips, product suggestions (but not like a sales person, unlike some other stylists), ideas for fun cuts, etc. Did you know that she even dreams about ideas for new curly cuts?! This is a passionate woman! Bravo, Leah! Thanks for all you do to take care of your customers (we love you!)!
I loved Leah! She did a great job with my cut and showed me great styling tips. I was so impressed and I highly recommend urban gypsy and Leah. Great find for curly-haired girls!
Thank you Urban Gypsy!! I have type 3A/B hair and have never had a good haircut in my life until I found you guys! The first time I came, I had Erin as my stylist. She was excellent! She gave me my first great haircut. She talked me through what she was doing, why she was doing it and how to keep my hair looking its best even after I left the salon. It worked! My hair looked great every day afterwards! This second time I went, I was only available to come on a certain day *I live a couple hours away from the salon*. Jenn had an appointment opening. I grabbed it and am so glad I did. Jenn gave me a fabulous cut and I couldn't be happier. These girls are wonderful! I have never in my life received more compliments on my hair from family, friends and even strangers as I'm walking down the street or entering businesses. I've even had people just come up and want to touch my hair and learn who cuts it! I hope everyone I talk to takes my advice and heads your way ladies, but don't forget to save an opening for me every once in awhile! ;) I am truly greatful! You've gained a loyal customer for life!
I love ERIN!!!!!!!! she gave me so much info about how to make my curls pop! I have 3b/c hair and one side was longer and looser then the other side. Erin gave me a cut that improved the shape balance texture and look of my hair. The differene was noticible the same day, and styling is so much easier now! I LOVE HER AND I WILL CONTINUE GOING TO HER!!! p.s. The atmosphere of the salon is Fabalous!!!
I came in not really sure of what I wanted. I knew that my hair was too heavy on the bottom with no volume on top. Having heard this, Erin understood the issues I was having and gave me a great, easy to maintain haircut. Also, along the way she gave me countless tips to help me when styling my very curly hair. My hair felt lighter and fully and was much curlier than it had been because it was finally styled the right way! I recommend Erin for you!
She ROCKS! Everything written about her in reviews is dead on. The woman can cut curly hair like nothing I have ever seen and I have seen alot. I am the daughter of a hairdresser so hair is very important to me. I stopped fighting my curly hair 3 years ago even flew to a popular salon in Ft. Lauderdale that specializes in cutting curly hair to get my hair cut. I liked the results but the price and time was just not realisitc to repeat. Joined NaturallyCurly to look for a salon closer to home. Read all the reviews on Leah, booked an appointment and took a friend with curly hair like me. Was blown away with the results. I have thick type 2C hair and it has never felt so lite and full of body like it does now. The women has an amazing talent and more importantly she teaches as she goes.
My 13 year old daughter and I both went to Leah this week. My daughter has never been happy with her head full of curls and I have struggled with mine as well. Well, no longer! We both got wonderful cuts that we can easily manage at home. My daughter already has two friends that have scheduled appointments with Leah after seeing my daughter's hair. If you live anywhere in the Indy area go see Leah. You will be thrilled!!
So, Leah had to leave early one night because of an emergency, and I ended up getting my hair cut by Erin. Erin is a great hairstylist. She listened to me. She understood what I wanted. I loved my haircut. I would go back to either one. Both are great!
I absolutely HATE getting my hair cut to the point that I would only do it once a year or so. I found Leah on here and made an appointment. I have always seen pictures of short, curly styles, but have never been able to get a haircut that would produce anything like the pictures. Leah did it - she is absolutely fabulous! My hair is above my shoulders for the first time in my adult life, and I LOVE it! She is friendly, knowledgeable, and talented in what she does. You don't have to dread haircuts anymore!! Go to her and she will take excellent care of you. I will definitely go back again when it's time. Thank you so much, Leah!
I HATE getting my hair cut...which is why I dont. Or...I just get a trim. But I was sick of having the same hair style since Jr High so I came on here looking for a stylist that could do curly hair. I found Leah...OH MY GOSH!!! I finally have a stylist that I can go to over and over and over. My hair has a style for the first time EVER! She gave me great tips for products and techniques that I can't wait to try out!!! I honestly...have never been happy with a cut until now. Thanks!!! See you in 8 wks!!!
Thumbs WAY up for Leah! I just had my first haircut on Saturday and it was the best. Leah certainly knows how to cut and style curly hair. She listened to me and made me feel very comfortable. She explained products and styling methods. I left the salon a very satisfied "curly girl". Way to go Leah, keep up the great work!
It's another thumbs up for Leah!! I went for the first time and shared with her my unhappy experiences with past stylists. (They always make me poofy.) Leah was awesome, very personable, and attentive to what I wanted. She also helped me with how to style my own hair and said I could call anytime if i had any styling questions. I left the salon looking and feeling great, not at all poofy, and was able to go out for lunch rather than rushing home to "fix" what some stylist had done to my hair. She's just fantastic and knows her stuff! A Barnettt Indianapolis
I chose Leah based on the great reviews on here -- and they were right! I went in with a mess of a hairdo -- not cut in the previous 8 months, bad, grown-out color -- and I walked out with a cute, shorter cut with great highlights and a new allover color. Leah was very easy to work with, not intimidating, and it cost way less to get my hair cut, colored, and foiled with her than it would have down in Bloomington, where I live. I have another appointment scheduled for August!
I ended up reading all the reviews, and booked an appt for either Leah or Erin. They told me Leah was available, so I booked it. Today, I went into the salon, and I explained that my last hair stylist would always cut my hair stick straight, and would always say that she didn't want to cut too much because she didn't know how it would curl. Leah asked me what I wanted out of my hair. I explained I was trying to work with my natural curls rather than fight them because I am just too lazy to straighten my hair every other day! I said I want something fun, sexy, and cute, but I don't know how to tell you to cut my hair to get it that way. (After all, I'm an accountant, not a hairstylist. :) ) Well, needless to say, she felt my hair and said that my curls were just beautiful. Ok. She then proceeded to tell me how she was going to cut my hair. I told her do what you've got to do, but i want to keep the length if at all possible. She kept most of the length, and I LO-O-O-O-VE MY HAIR!! I have the curls I always wanted! I knew I could get them with the right cut, and she did a FABULOUS job! I will definitely be back! In fact, I have already made my appt for September! I have not been happier with my hair until today! Thank you naturallycurly.com for having the curly salons on the site! Finally, someone who knows how to work with curls!
After reading all the recommendations, I booked an appointment with Leah and drove an hour north to Broad Ripple Village in Indianapolis. Urban Gypsy is a small, unpretentious place in an old house, and it has its own parking out back (definitely a plus for Broad Ripple). I knew I was in the right place when I was greeted by two very friendly women with gorgeous curly hair - one was Leah, and the other was the receptionist, whose hair Leah said she'd just finished cutting! I walked into Urban Gypsy with a tragic haircut akin to a curly mullet. Leah did a great job fixing the disaster and was friendly and talkative throughout my appointment (easing my haircut stress!) I can't believe how much better my curls look now. Goodbye, curly mullet! I'll definitely be back to Urban Gypsy & Leah for my next haircut.
Leah is simply wonderful. I had my first haircut from her this weekend and I am so pleased with how she understood the way my hair works. She was really fun to talk to and the salon was super cute!
Leah at Urban Gypsy is WONDERFUL! She knew exactly what to do with my naturally curly hair. She was really fun to talk to and the salon was super cute. Leah has a long term client in me!
Erin did a great job on my hair! My hair was in serious need of a good cut (it was damaged and misshapen), and Erin took the time to explain how she was going to cut it and what it would look like when she was done. She then showed me the proper way to apply products to my hair. It was obvious that she knew what she was doing, and she wasn't afraid of my curls! I'm very happy with my haircut, and I'd recommend Erin to anybody!
I've been looking for a new stylist ever since I moved to Indianapolis. This site led me to find Erin at Urban Gypsy. My hair has been in poor condition for months, and I haven't had a good haircut in a long time. I sat down, told Erin exactly what I didn't like about my hair, and she gave me an amazing haircut! She went over everything before she did it to ensure that I knew what was going to happen, and she wasn't afraid of my curls (as so many stylists are). As she cut my hair, it was obvious that she knew exactly what she was doing. She even showed me a way to apply products to ensure that my hair gets evenly coated. Erin is a great stylist, and I'd recommend her to anyone!
After going almost a year without a haircut, I was wary about trying yet another stylist who did not have a lot of experience with curly hair. I was on the brink of picking up my scissors and chopping my own locks (which I did a lot in college!) when I foud recommendations for Leah on NaturallyCurly.com. And every single recommendation was spot on! Leah made my long, limp frizzy locks bounce back to life! She immediatley understood my hair, noticed the trouble spots and addressed everything with a cut (while keeping the length!) and a perfect combination of products. Leah took the time to tell me what she used, how much of each and why, and I left feeling prettier than I have in a long time. Thank you Leah!
She took the time to make sure we knew exactly how I wanted it cut. I have multi-type curly hair... ringlets towards my crown, wavy towards the back, and almost straight underneath... My cut ended up being perfect because we talked about what I wanted. Also, their prices for highlights are very reasonable. I recommend Erin to anyone who has curly hair and knows what they want!
I have hade several stylist over the past three years and none of them could do what Ashlie did in one appointment. My hair looked beautiful and she taught me how to what she called cocktail products together to help get the results at home. I am so happy .I booked another appointment at Christmas.Thank You Ali
I just had my first appointment with Leah on Saturday April 21, 2007, and I loved her. She really helped me with my curly hair and I love the cut. I have been trying and trying to find a hair stylist around town and I have finally found one. She helped also by telling me what products I should be using and after my appt I bought some and I love them. Leah is great with curly hair, she really seemed to understand what I was going through.
My whole experience wes great from start to finish. I had some really bad color jobs and my hair need alot of help. Leah took alot of time with me, the color looks a whole lot better and she gives great cuts too!! I recommend ANYONE to Leah not just curly heads. She is WONDERFUL!!
I have struggled with my curly hair for many years and am thrilled to have found a wonderful stylist that can handle my hair. Leah is great. She has very thick long curly hair herself so she knows what you are up against with the Indiana humidity. She gives a great cut and great advice. She told me that what she enjoys most about her job is being able to give young girls with curly hair advice on care, styling and managing those sometimes unruly locks. Something she didn't get when she was their age. I highly recommend Leah for people of any age with curly hair.
