I've been shy of going to Above Ground. My friend has gone to Cookie for years, but she is far more adventurous with her hair than I am. I decided to try Julie about 3 months ago, when a stylist at another salon used thinning shears and made me a huge frizz ball. She corrected it and then I was hooked! If she can give me the best haircut I've had in the 12 years I've lived in Ann Arbor immediately after getting a disaster, then she is pure gold and worth every penny. I went to her for a second time and she completely got what I wanted, and boy did she deliver. My hair has never been as bouncy and behavin' until her. I've always been a fickle pickle with hairdressers, but I'm settled now. WORTH EVERY PENNY!
Ryan did an incredible job on my hair. The cut was like I had never had before and I got tons of compliments. I especially loved the coloring he did to my hair, absolutly perfect! The salon had a great atmosphere and everyone was wonderful. Was an awesome experience!
I have been going to Ryan for about 2 years now. He is an EXPERT in cutting curly hair and literally does the best color/highlights I have ever had (and I have had a lot of people color my hair). Hands down, I have never been happier with a stylist. If you are reading this, you know how hard it is to find someone that can cut curly hair, and believe me I have had some terrible haircuts. Ryan takes his time highlighting, washing, styling, cutting and pays special attention to every one of my curls. He listens and knows what I want, but will also tell me if he thinks I need to take more off, do something different, etc. I basically just let him do his thing now without much input because I really trust him and know that my hair is in great hands. I have never left that place unhappy at all. On top of that, everyone there is super friendly and Ryan himself is hilarious and also just a really interesting person. I have such a great time when I go to Above Ground! They even had a henna tattoo artist there one Saturday when I got a cut...it was so much fun! Ladies in Ann Arbor with curly hair...you are crazy if you go anywhere else!
Ryan is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about curly hair! I learned so much from him about how to take care of my curls. He gave me the first haircut that I was ever satisfied with. Such a huge relief to finally find someone I felt I could trust with my curls.
I have seen Cookie for years. I have found her to be very hit or miss. I have gotten some great hair cuts. I have also gotten some pretty bad hair cuts. When she is on her game she is great, but unfortunately she is not consistent. I'm looking elsewhere.
Worst haircut EVER!!! DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU HAVE CURLY HAIR!! The first few times I went to Cookie, my hair looked awesome. She cut the curls perfectly - great haircut! DO NOT BE FOOLED!! She will suck you in and then it is like an alter ego kicks in and she will butcher your hair!! My last haircut has taken years to grow back to the length it was before my last haircut from Cookie. My cut was so awful that a girl I worked with saw me and started crying. I had to go home and cut my own hair to try and even it up. I have had so many stylists over the years and most try to cut my hair as if it were straight, I've had layers, bangs, super short hair and super long hair, but I have NEVER, EVER, EVER had such an awful cut. Totally unexpected from my previous experiences with Cooke.... Do yourself a favor and save yourself the pain and agony - Great Cuts is only $8 and you will have a much better experience!!
After reading that the salon specialized in curly hair I was excited - but the cut I received here was the worst I have ever had and I am still growing it out. My boyfriend had to even out the sides the next morning. They did not listen to what I asked for and once the cut was done and it was time to dry Andrew asked how to dry it curly...he didnt even know how to use a diffuser - so much for a curly salon! never again!
she can work magic with curly hair. whenever i got my hair cut short, it always ended up a disaster. so when i went to above ground, i was a bit scared at first. also towards the end i got a bit nervous because Cookie seemed like she was cutting off more than i wanted. But it ended up looking amazing. If you are getting your hair cut here, my advice is let cookie do her thing. she really knows what she is doing. first time in my life that i do not have anything tying back my hair and i am proud to sport my curls!!!
I wrote a review of cookie but I don't know if it didn't get posted or something because I don't see it. Anyway, I love her and she's the first person who actually got me to appreciate my curls and told me about the Curly Girl book. She also told me to throw out the shampoo, and cuts the hair first wet, then dry. She sometimes has me come back in one week just to see how things have settled out for me. She also has given me several free lessons on how to do my hair at home. Finally, she also did my wedding makeup and hair and I sure wish she did makeup for a living too! She was WAY better than anyone who I've ever been to who calls themselves a make up artist!
I've been going to Cookie for 4 years now and love her. I do feel like she always cuts more off than I want, but I always love her styles and she's the only person I'd ever tell to "feel free to do whatever you want, just don't make it too short". She also works for the Purology design team teaching people across the country to cut hair, and she even has some patents on her block-cutting techniques.
I have to completely agree with the previous poster who wrote that Cookie gave her a "rat-tail," she did the same thing to me. She gave me the worst haircut I have ever had. I went in with high expectations based on some of the reviews I had read on this site. I asked for no length to be taken off, just an allover trim -- she took off 3 inches. My hair feels SO thin now, half my hair was lying on the floor when she was finished. To make things worse, the layers on one side of my hair were cut noticeably shorter than the other, but I didn't catch it until it was too late. Cookie is friendly and *appears* to be listening, but I think she just does whatever she wants to instead. I will never go back to her. Worse, I'm going to have to wait forever to have this awful haircut grow out
I was truly hopeful when visiting Cookie. I strongly vocalized my need for "touching up " my layers, but that I didn't want length taken off.... Yes she's funny, yes she's easy to talk to. But my head is not her canvass. I was upset to find she didn't listen to my request at all. She gave me what she called a "bohemian" look, which involved cutting 5 inches off and giving me essentially a curly mullet with a rat tail. Yes, a rat-tail. I can't believe I paid this woman. Apparently some people are happy with her, but she has ruined a full year of growing out my hair. I paid her $60 to cry over my hair for two days, and due to the "mullet", I can't even put it up to hide how ugly it is while I try to grow it out again. As far as I'm concerned, she owes me $60.
First of all, Cookie's hilarious! Not only was she really easy to talk to, she was willing to work with me on my own tricky hair requirements (short hair that often needs to be pulled back for laboratory work). She had a million suggestions that I could actually do on my own too. And, I've never had a haircut that suited me better. Go see her!!
I too went to see Cookie at the end of September, and have to agree with some of the other posters.. I have been growing out my hair again, because she cut way too much off. I couldn't even put my hair up in a clip without it falling down again. The haircut is great, if she could just keep it longer, and not cut so..much off.
I hate to burst the "Cookie" bubble, but I want to spare others the expense and disappointment that I just experienced with her. After searching endlessly for a good "curly hair" stylist, I made an appointment with Cookie, based on the enthusiastic reviews I read on this site. One review did state that she cut too short, but I went anyway. First cut was great. She was friendly, informative and attentive. The cut was WAY too short (by several inches!), but Cookie assured me that she needed to remove all the dry ends. I was ok with that for the first cut. I waited 3 months to return, mostly to let my hair grow out. In that time, my hair was easy to style, curled well with little effort, looked good. I was happy. I had my 2nd appointment yesterday. Told her upfront and specifically that the last cut was great, but too short. That I was happy with my hair's current length. Don't take anything off the length. Just trim up the top, back and sides. Once again, I now have too short hair. All over. It's not even curling nicely today because too much was taken off. Three months of growth gone. I will NOT be returning to Cookie. I am certainly willing to try new things and am open to a stylist's advise, but I believe it should be a stylist's priority to LISTEN to, ACKNOWLEDGE, and RESPECT the client's wishes and needs.
Cookie gave me one of the best cuts I've ever had. She's the first person that's cut my hair who truly understands curly hair. My triangle-head is gone! She took time with me and gave me alot of great advise on products in general (she doesn't push anything on you) and what is best for the curly hair structure. She wet and conditioned my hair to cut it - no shampoo. I'll be going back.
I went to Cookie after reading the rave reviews on this site. The hair cut I got was just okay. There are now areas in my hair which poof out that I don't like. Overall, I'd say the cut I got was okay, but not superb.
I saw the recommendations for Cookie on this site, so I made an appointment with her. For the first time in my life, someone cut my hair the way curly hair should be cut! I did not recognize my own hair when she was finished because I did not know that it could curl in such a spectacular way! It has been a week since I got my hair cut, and every day my hair looks just as good as it did when I came out of the salon. The cut is a little shorter than I expected so it has taken some time to get used to, but it is what my curls needed. She also used products in it that define the curls and make them shiny; I got similar products and I reproduce the same marvelous curls every day. I highly recommend her!
