I've had Joy cut my hair twice now. Absolutely the best cuts ever in my life, no exaggeration. So thankful for Joy and her amazing skill. It's worth every penny and then some.
Joy is absolutely the BEST!
Joy - is GREAT - I would and do recommend here highly
I love getting stopped at the mall and receiving comliments about my hair.
Joy is AWESOME! I have been going to her for almost 2 years now. She makes my 2B/C waves look super soft and sexy!
She's great! I fell in love with my curls after meeting with Joy. She spends a quality amount of time, not just cutting, washing, and setting my curls, but walking me through the process so that I can improve my at-home technique. I will be keeping Joy as my stylist, she's wonderful!
took all my anxiety away about having my hair cut since i'd just grown out the last stylists mistake!
I had not been to a salon in over two years. I had resorted to trimming myself. I did some research on curly hair and found the Curly Girl handbook. I found that Joy had been trained by Lorraine Massey that wrote the Curly Girl handbook. My experience was what I had always wanted. Absolutely geared to curly girls. I learned more about the steps in caring and styling my hair. Thank you Joy.
I have been getting my haircut for years at the Devaschan Salon on Broome St in NYC. I moved to the South and I am so happy I found Joy Rudisill. I had an appointment in NYC cancelled due to one of their snowstorms and hadn't had a haircut in 7 months! Joy taught me about the pineapple to wear at night and about Mister Right and allowing my curls to "set" just like if I were to wear hot rollers. She also taught me how to pin my hair up to avoid thinning hair due to suffocating the roots day after day wearing a pony tail. I learned so much and I have implemented all of it and I am so happy with the results. Thank you Joy!!! I'll be back!!! We Southerners (or "transplanted yankees" depending on the audience) are so lucky to have you.
Another salon recently gave me a horrible curly cut, and Joy totally saved it and made my day! I will never make the mistake of going to another stylist again. Joy's the best!
I've gone to Joy for two years, and I love having a shorter cut that still looks youthful, feminine, natural, and sophisticated! No curly hair helmet for me! I get complimented on my hair almost every time I go out, and I always send them to Joy!
My hair looks great - finally, the curl I always knew was buried inside is now bouncing and shining on the outside!
I was a mess. I had been seeing a stylist for over 20 years and having my hair bleached and pulled straight. My Hair was FRIED. After several months of begging my stylist to do something different, I started looking for a new stytlist. This was a very difficult decision but I had no choice. A friend at work with very curly hair had recommened Joy to me and said that she had changed her life. I was all for that. I went to see Joy in April of 2010 and Iam so happy that I did. My hair looks so much better. People stop me and ask if they can touch my hair. I have ringlet curls. They are so soft and my hair looks so healthy. Joy thanks for helping me embrace my Curls. I just love them.
I always thought my hair was just straight and limp. But Joy showed me that there is actually some wave in it, and her ability to cut with the curl has given me the extra body I need. Now it actually has a shape and doesn't just hang down in my face the way it used to. I've also watched her work miracles on people with wildly curly manes. Bravo! 5 stars from Me!
Joy continues to amaze me with the miracles she works with my hair. I had been blow-drying my hair as straight as possible for years, and when I let it dry on its own it was so straight in spots I thought it would be impossible to ever have curls in those areas again. Joy not only gave me a great cut, but also taught me how to nurse my hair and curls back to health and keep them that way. I’ve gotten compliments ever since. Joy always asks what I have in mind, tells me whether or not that will work for my type curls, offers suggestions when I ask, and clearly explains exactly what she’s doing and the effect it will have. Joy is a true professional. I highly recommend her.
Joy is like a mind reader. I saw her for the second time in December of 2010. She gave me my second cut and I am just as happy as I was the first time. She spend just as much time as I needed and my cut is fabulous. I have recommended her to other curly tops. Everyone with curly hair should see Joy. I'm a glass artist. Joy is a curl artist!
Joy is fantastic! I saw her for the first time in April 2010. She spent a long time with me going over what I wanted, how to use the products, and how to style my hair. She cut my hair perfectly and it was the first time I was ever happy with my curly hair. My curls cascaded rather than looking choppy. I was so happy I could cry.
dear joy: Best. Haircut. Ever. love, my difficult, unruly, impossible to style, curly hair.
Joy is the best! I've been going to Joy for about 2 years now. The difference between what my curls looked like before going to her and now is like night and day. Before Joy, I used to blow dry my hair straight most days (which took forever) and only dared to go curly when the humidity left me no choice. Now, I wear it curly 99.9% of the time and love it!! The way she cuts your hair curl by curl really makes a difference. She also teaches you how to use the Deva products, which I love. Highly recommend for any curly girl/guy!!
Joy gave me my first "dry"/devacut and I love it!! I get compliments all the time!!
I got my haircut about three weeks ago at Joyfully Curly and I absolutely love it!! This was my first "dry" curly haircut and I was definitely scared about the outcome, but I am so glad that I did it because it is great!! I have gotten compliments on my hair EVERY SINGLE DAY!!! How healthy and shiny it looks, how bouncy my curls are, etc, etc!!! I am extremely pleased with the results and would recommend Joy to any curly haired girl/guy wanting a good haircut that will bring out the best in their curls!
Joy is a God-send for us curly headed people!!! I can honestly say I've never been disappointed with her cuts and I always walk away feeling like a million bucks. People compliment me on my hair all the time so I get to brag on Joy a lot :)
Joy is the best stylist I have ever been to. She knew just what I needed to do with my hair!!!!
Joy absolutely rocks!!! She is a trained Deva stylist and is the first stylist that I've ever worked with who knows how to cut and style curly hair. I get compliments on my hair all the time from curly and straight girls. Even my mom says my hair looks the best that it ever has in my life (40 years)!
Joy at Joyfully Curly in Charlotte is the only stylist I trust with my curls! Before finding her, I would always leave a salon with a) a mediocre haircut, and b) hair that was either crazy frizzy and not curly (because they wouldn't know how to style it) or just dripping wet (so I could avoid the embarassment and just style it myself at home). She really knows how to get the most out of your natural style with the Deva cut and styling products. I get SO many compliments on my hair when I leave her salon, even from complete strangers. My curls are shiny, healthy-looking, and lay perfectly without being too heavy or 'big'. I highly recommend Joyfully Curly for anyone wanting to see just how great their curls can look. You will not be disappointed! Jennifer - Charlotte, NC
I traveled 3 1/2 hours to see Joy for my first devacut and a corrective color and I will do it again and again and again. My hair color is PERFECT. Just the way I like it. I have fought with stylist for 5 years and the 1st visit to Joy and my hair looks absolutely gorgeous. Once I left the salon, we went out to eat and I had 3 compliments on my hair within an hour. The cut is great, my hair is no longer heavy and the curls lay perfect. Thanks Joy for a wonderful experience. Candy Roanoke, VA
Joy is the greatest!!! I love my hair again for the first time in years!!!!!
Joy is great!!! She does excellent work!!! Joy colors my hair as well as cutting it and I have never been disappointed!!! She always listens to what I want and will tell me if my hair; which is fine and thin, will not do the style I want, this means a lot to me!!!
Joy offers information far beyond what I have been given before. The hair and styling techniques that she gives, specifically, the hair color, helps give the hair cut itself a whole new life. The Deva Cut and the Deva line of products that Joy offers is definitely worth trying. The way the technique is approached excels anything I have tried ever before. Thank you Joy! You have transformed my hair, and I love it!
This has been the best hair cut that I have ever had! I love the Deva Cut and the products. They bring out the curl in the best way, and don't weight them down. I highly recommend Joy and the Deva Cut!
This has been the best hair cut that I have ever had! I love the Deva Curl hair cut and the products. They bring out the curl in the best way, and don't weight them down. I highly recommend Joy and the Deva Cut!
Joy is GREAT - she introduced me to my curly hair in Jan 2010 in Charlotte , NC - I live in Ohio - I am in the area again for Jan 2011 - visited Joy last week - she works a miracle with my hair - I am en JOY ing my curly hair thanks to JOY Joyfully Curly ---Connie Bartholomew
I haven't had a decent haircut in over 2 years. In that time I tried so many different hair stylists only to leave their salons frustrated and in tears over the awful things they did to my hair. My mother told me about Joy's salon and told me to try it out. I left Joy's salon in tears...but they were definitely happy tears! My hair looks BEAUTIFUL! I couldn't believe how good it was considering how damaged and messed up my hair was from previous haircuts. It is the best haircut I have ever had. She has totally changed my outlook on my curly hair and made me one happy customer. Go see her! You won't be disappointed!
Joy has helped me embrace my curly hair. She gave me a great cut. More importantly, though, she helped me understand the process of having healthy curly hair. I notice it most when I see myself in pictures - how great my hair looks now (and how bad it used to look!!)
Best haircut I ever had! She gives great instruction while styling my hair. I will never let anyone else touch my curls!
Absolutely the best!
Joy is such a wonderful stylist! She always listens to what I want and doesn't try to push products on me. She always tells me if what I want will work on my waves or not. I trust her judgment and her expertise!
Joy is so friendly and pleasant while she works miracles on your curls!
Joy has done wonders with my hair and has brought natural bounce back!
It has been several years since Joy has been helping me keep my curls joyful! The time and energy she puts into each counseling, cutting, product information sharing and keeping your hair healthy is awesome. For years stylists kept ignoring my requests to work with my curls, or not blow my hair straight went unheard. One evening I saw a local woman's magazine and there was an ad for Joyfully Curly! I was able to see Joy the next day and have continued to see her several times a year since to keep my hair in the best possible condion. Using the no or low-poo shampoo and conditioner really has helped, and I use the styling products to keep my look going. I have recommended Joy and Joyfully Curly to many people and will continue to do this to any curly girls I meet. Thanks Joy for all you do!
Joy does good devacuts & color also. I got lots of complements after my appointments with Joy. It is awesome to leave the salon with happy curls instead of going home depressed because it will take weeks to grow out. She explains what she is doing with your hair during the cut, what products she is using, & gives you styling tips!
Joy is so sweet. She gave me the best haircut. It was so easy to maintain and it made my curls really shine. I only wish I lived in Charlotte so I could go see her more often!
Joy showed me that I do have some natural curl and I can use it to my advantage. I had always been told that my hair was stick straight and fine. Joy showed me that it can have natural wave and body if it is cut right and styled with the right products. And I have seen her turn other women's frizzy manes into sophisticated styles that require minimal care. I was pretty sceptical when she first told me she was going to New York to learn a new way of cutting curly hair. But she showed me that it does work. Her training with Deva in New York has made her a far better stylist in every way. Her extended training since then, and her experience as a specialist in curly hair in the last few years have convinced me to recommend her to any of my friends who wrestle with their naturally curly locks.
Joy is fantastic! I am so liberated. All my life I have rolled and dried, stretched, ironed and whatever my hair to get it smooth and " uncurly" and I have a lot of hair. My grandaughter (also a curly girl) suggested that I embrase my curls; she was only 4 at the time. Joy has styled my curly hair for years now. Her talent and careful attention to detail with her "curly girl" cuts and styling allow me much more time to enjoy my life. Everywhere I go I am stopped and told how beautiful my hair is. I do not color it and am a Summer so I am quite platinum. It simply glissens. It is wonderful to have free georgeous tresses that are the envy of most everyone. Last week I was at my sister's home in Charleston, SC. Her son David Mullis is an award winning hair stylist. He told me I looked beautiful. He said I looked the best he has ever seen me. He is 39 years old. He told me my hair is wonderful. That I have a perfect cut and color. It really works for me. What a compliment to Joy and to me. I am so lucky to have found Joy and she sure has given me a joyfully curly outlook when it comes to my hair. Thank you Joy!!!
I have experienced so many salons in Charlotte. From the high-end and even chasing some previously favored hair stylist down to the bottom-end, I have had them all. Joy was the first person to really understand the dream I was chasing. She took the time to advise me on care, color, routine and made me feel like she cared. Joy even advised me on letting my hair go back to natural as I had very few grays. Never has a stylist told me to go that route before. My previous stylist of 5 years helped me to maintain a nearly platinum blonde (btw I am level 5 brown naturally) until he changed salons; started using bad color or worse stopped giving a darn. Its been assessed that he kept painting the peroxide over my ends and as I thought I needed touch-ups, I allowed him to do so. Then I went through a few stylists until I found Joy. She has curly hair and a lot of it. Joy is beautiful and a model for the type of curly girl I want to become. I appreciate her outward appearance and she is helping me to appreciate mine. My cut is great and I almost always can gel it and go. In my world that is exactly the way I want it.
Joy took my dried up and overcolored hair and turned me into a curly girl masterpiece! She's the best!
I got my first deva cut from Joy on new years eve. When I went out with my girlfriends that night and they all kept complementing my hair cut. This is the first cut I've had where my hair looks like it has a real shape and style. Joy showed me a lot of new techniqes to help keep my curls from frizzing and I can't wait to perfect them!
Joy took the time to talk with me and help me deal with my curls. Although I had to drive an hour to her salon, it was well worth it!
Joy does such a GREAT job! I wouldn't go anywhere else. She takes time with you to understand what you want and need in a DEVA cut. I get compliments all the time. Kathy B.
Joy is the best stylist I have ever had. I didn't know how curly my hair really was until I met her; I thought I had a frizzy mess, but Joy brings out the curl. I can finally wear my hear long and no have it look like Rosanna Rosannadana's hair! Thank you Joy!
Thank God I found Joy. After trying the other so called curl specialist salons and coming away dissappointed, I was so happy to have a cut that didn't feel like a chop job. She was so helpful with information on products and tips to keep the frizz down which is important in the south.I even convinced my older sister to stop fighting the curl and now she is a client too. We've never been so happy with my hair.I have to fight the urge to tell strangers what they are doing wrong with their hair.
Before finding Joy, I'd been to stylist after stylist (a few in the Charlotte area) claiming to be curly experts, but I always got the same result: layers that resulted in super thin, scraggly curls at the bottom and a triangle on the top. Think 70s. When I found joyfullycurly.com and read about the Deva concept, I was intrigued to learn that Deva stylists cut hair while it's dry so they can see the shape of the curls as they cut each one by one. They treat curly hair differently from straight hair from the beginning! I visited Joy for my first Deva cut two years ago, switched to the DevaCurl product line, and haven't looked back. My curls are thick all the way to the bottom. No more layers! Joy helped me grow my hair super long. I haven't had hair this long since I was little because in the past, it didn't curl right once it got past my shoulders! Now I have a head full of long, soft, shiny curls that haven't seen lather or sulfates in years. Joy is the reason I love my hair now!
My 10 year old daughter and I experienced our first Deva cut from the knowledgeable and expert hands of Joy Rudisill. We have both received many compliments about how beautiful our curls are. My daughter is so cute, as she's adamant about following the curl care routine precisely the way that Joy taught us. I found Joy to be very informative and was able to answer all my questions about curl care, including the important 2nd day hair styling.
Total disappointment! To be fair I am not 100% CG, but I did specifically say this to Joy. I told her that I do like to straighten my hair too; it is just easier for me when I run, and I don't have to fuss with it every day when I blow it out. So, I wanted the best of both worlds. What did I get??? Total frustration. When it is curly it is completely frizzy on top, and I know how to use Deva products. I have been using for over 1 year. The top is just a mess. Today I decided to straighten it for the first time since the cut and UGH!! The top is a disconnected mess and the cut looks horrible. The best I can do is put in a ponytail or put it up and wait for it to grow. I will never get a Deva cut again. I should have stuck with my stylist who knew how to cut my curly hair for both looks. In praise of Joy, she does know her products and explains everything very well, but for me, it is not worth the $94 price and two-hour car drive both ways.
Oh my God, this was the most wonderful hair cutting experience I have ever had. Joy gave me her total attention and explained all the DevaCurl procedures and she went over each product with me in great detail I was really worried because my hair I thought was very afro-textured and course well without all the crap I had been using in my hair, Joy helped me find out that my hair is more fine and soft and did not even need a lot of product to achieve my natural soft corkscrew curls. I am loving the whole Deva product line and i love my Deva-cut. Thanks Joy.(and she didn't try and force the products on me, no pressure at all)
"Joyfully curly" is the perfect name for my experience over the past two years as a client with Joy Rudisill at her salon...joyfully curly. After years id stylists trying to cookie-cutter style my curly hair...I found Joy and was introduced to the DevaCare products, as well as a fabulous curly cut every time! Two years of Joy's hair styling and using the products has kept my hair in super condition, and Joy always patiently updates my education on how to keep my hair wonderfully curly and soft. I discovered that my hair actually responds to using the specific products which Joy suggested to best meet my curly girl needs. Joy does the expert cut and the products condition and manage my hair to curl joyfully! Whenever I have had a question about any of the products or the cut, Joy has always assisted me in understanding the why's and how's of maintaining my hair. Thanks Joy for offering your fabulous hair-styling and products in the Charlotte area!
After three years of mediocre haircuts at the "best" salons in Charlotte, I am so very happy to have finally found Joy! It's not just that she knows how to cut curly hair; she's an excellent all around stylist. I went in with a long list of things I didn't want (not too bushy! not too short! not too round! not triangular! not in my face!); she listened patiently, looked at pictures with me to make sure she knew what I liked and didn't, and then gave me a fantastic cut that looks adorable (and not just the day I left the salon; it looks just as good when I do it at home). Same thing with color; she spent a long time looking at samples and making recommendations about how to get the look I wanted, and then gave me the best color I've had in a long while (bonus: she uses the Kuene line, which has nice staying power and is easy on my hair). The salon itself is pretty and convenient to most of Charlotte (Sharon Amity at Monroe), and the prices are consistent with most good salons in town. A great experience & a great haircut - highly recommended!
I got my hair cut today, and I love it!! First, the salon is VERY nice. She is very professional, and best of all--she did a great job. I was very very happy with the whole process. The cut. She customizes everything to your individual hair needs. It was just great. She showcases the Deva products (the line by Lorraine Massey), instructs and uses them on your hair. I bought the travel kit for starters, I really did like the products. I really like the cut, its sassy and sophisticated, and I may even be able to wear my favorite earrings again because my hair is shorter--yay (they used to get tangled up). http://www.joyfullycurly.com Its a full service salon and spa. I plan on going back for a massage. The place is REALLY nice! Yeah, she was good. She cuts your hair dry. She cuts each curl individually. She dried me under the dryer for a few, then used a diffuser. You'll be happy with the process, for sure. Check out pics of me and my new doo http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v29/kayjay360/HAIR%20PICS/ PASSWORD: curlygirl
I went to Joy about a week ago. She is the first curl specialist I have been to. She gave me the best haircut of my life. She took the split ends off and cut with the curl so the curls sat better. She then cleansed with devacurl no poo, conditioned with one condition, left b'leave in in, and styled with Angell. My hair was lookin' fly! I drove an 1hr and a half to get to her because I live in SC and her salon is in Charlotte, NC, but it was well worth it. She was also very gentle with my dry, tangly, coarse 3b hair. Oh yeah, I was in doubt at first because I didn't think she had much experience with ethnic hair, but she proved me wrong. If you have curly hair and live near charlotte, nc I would definitely recommend going to her!
I just had my first curly girl haircut yesterday. Joy went to Devachan salon in NY city for training. Devachan Salon is owned by Lorraine Massey who wrote CURLY GIRL. Joy gave me the best haircut that I have ever had. She cut my hair dry as soon as I arrived at the salon. Next she washed my hair and explained the best washing and condtioning process. Then she showed me the best way to style my hair, then she let me sit under the hood dryer and relax while my hair dried. After it was dry she checked the cut and made sure there were no hairs or curls out of place. It was a wonderful experience! I highly recommend her! I will be going back to see her again!
