The Kiss Curl (also referred to as the “spit curl””> was made a popular fashion trend worldwide by American-born French dancer, singer, and actress Josephine Baker, who often rocked a few around her hairline and forehead in addition to large hoop earrings and a banana costume. Singer Bill Haley, who led the 1950s American Nostalgia movement, rocked one above his blind eye to divert attention from his impairment. Since the flapper era of the 1920s, the Spit/Kiss Curl became a unique beauty and fashion staple with no signs of slowing.

A Kiss Curl is made by smoothing or plastering down one face-framing curl. Its original title includes the form in which it was being plastered to the face (saliva”>, but now we have edge control gel and pomade for that, thankfully.

What seemed like a dying trend has been recycled and resurfaced once again.

2014 was the comeback year for Kiss Curls, no doubt. We saw everyone from Zoe Kravitz to FKA Twigs…Men and women of all ages, races, and ethnicities rocked the slicked down curl, and baby hairs once again became all the rage. I think it’s here to stay–for another year, at least, until we get bored again and decide to bring back Rushens.

Psst… Want to get the look?

Grab an edge control tamer, twirl one curl around your ear till it’s sticky, and smooth it down to your skin.
