Stylist: Tina

Now I finally understand why people don't trust hair stylists. Background: I'm an african american female with curly natural hair. I've been growing my hair out for the past few years. I successfully managed to grow my curly hair past my shoulder (below my bra when straightened). Recently, I experienced quite a lot of heat damage, and decided that I was ready for a hair cut. No, not a trim, but an actual cut. As an avid youtuber fan, I have watched girls get beautiful Deva cuts (specialized cuts for curly hair) and thought I should try it. I walked into the salon with curls that reached past my shoulders. I write this yelp post with hair that barely reaches my collarbone. The beginning: I walked into the beautiful salon and immediately felt at home. It is tres chic, and the staff is wonderful. I meet my lovely stylist for the day, Tina, and we proceeded to chat. She asked me what I have in mind, and the first thing that came out of my mouth was "I came here to cut *some* of my heat damage and to get it shaped". Tina replied "Yes, cutting all that heat damage off would be way too short and way too much too soon for you". I thought we were on the same page. Now, I should say that I had no idea that I was supposed to come in with my hair already styled curly, yet dry. There was no such information on the site and when the folks at Spex called to confirm my appointment and ask questions, nobody told me this. As an african american female with 3c/4a hair, my curls aren't always poppin like that. So, I came to the salon with stretched out waves. Thus, Tina had to wet the hair a little bit to actually see the curls. That is when it all started to go wrong, but I still trusted the expert and was excited to see what could happen. The cut: After literally just wetting my hair and applying conditioner, she started snipping off the ends. After a few minutes, my hair was getting shorter and shorter, but it was still fine! It was still doable. After a few more minutes, she suggested we "take off some length" from the back. Though I was hesitant, I trusted her. After a few more minutes of snipping, my hair was getting uncomfortably short. I had to remind her that this is not what I came for. Honestly, it was a little hard to gauge the actual length of my hair at the time because my hair was WET and the curls had already began to SHRINK. There came a point when I just couldn't take it anymore and I said "Please, stop. I can't take this hair getting any shorter". She replied "I won't go shorter, plus I think I got all the heat damage off". Mind you, the FIRST THING I said was that I wanted SOME of the heat damage cut. I thought we had an understanding. But, apparently not. She tried to assure me by saying "It's summer. it's time for something drastic". I said "No, that is not what I asked for". She said "edgy is good". I said "I am not edgy person, and not really into the edgy look, so this isn't what I had in mind". That was the end of it. She spun me around and showed me the beautiful cut. It really is a beautiful cut, but not what I wanted and way too short. The end. Let me repeat. All she did was wet (not wash) my hair and cut it. No styling. As I walked to the counter to pay, the girl at the counter, the other stylist, and the other stylist's client gave me weird looks and kept staring at my hair. I asked myself whether it was that bad. But then told my insecurities to hush. I noticed that the other stylist was actually STYLING her clients' hair. She was styling the curls into ringlets with Deva Cut products. In fact, that client was there before I arrived and clearly left after I left. I asked Tina whether styling was a part of the process because again, I didn't really know that much about this whole process. She didn't explain ANYTHING to me in the beginning. She replied "I'm giving you a discount. Most of my black clients prefer the discount over the styling. Also black hair takes forever to dry". I said "But you didn't ask me", and she said "I figured you'd want the discount instead of the styling". I was shocked. She charged me $70. Now, I don't know what the price usually is, as there was no price list around. All I know is that 30 minutes of cutting without washing and styling does NOT feel like a proper experience. Moral of the story: 1. There wasn't enough patient education. 2. The communication was off. 3. My hair was cut way too short. 4. Inappropriate assumptions were made, all of which could have been clarified with communication. I read great things about Tina, and I could see why. She is lovely and warm and a great stylist. But, not only do I feel traumatized at the fact that I lost most of my hair, but I actually feel cheated. They say "never say never", but I'm tempted to say that I would never come back to Tina ever again. And would probably never trust a hair stylist because of this.

Do not hesitate to go to Traci!! I was super nervous trying to find a hair stylist in Seattle after moving from NYC, where I always went to Devachan to get my hair cut. I found several Deva-certified stylists in Seattle but many of them had mixed or even scary reviews here. I followed the good reviews for Traci and I'm so glad I did! She is a true pro, absolutely as good as the Deva stylists in NYC (but--with no love lost to NYC--quite a bit sweeter and half the price). Most importantly for me, she follows the Deva method of cutting the hair dry, so it can be sculpted according to the different ways the curls actually fall. I'm astounded that anyone would cut curly hair like straight hair. I'm thrilled that she will be my new stylist here, and would highly recommend her to anyone who needs a serious curly hair professional.

Amazing! I just smiled the entire drive home. Tina has renewed my faith in hair stylists and salons. Cut about a foot off, and now have a short, cute bob with bangs. I was so amazed, I had to give her a hug afterward! If you have been traumatized by hair appointments in the past, go see Tina, her talent with curly hair will give you a new lease on life. Tina most definitely gave me the BEST haircut I have ever had in my entire life! Now that I'm finally embracing my curls it is awesome that there are wonderful stylists like Tina out there, who are learning how to cut curly hair! I still remember my mom insisting on having someone cut my curly locks with a straight razor in the 50's! If you are in the Seattle area I highly recommend you give Tina a call at Spex. Fun salon and very talented crew! First time ever I can remember leaving a haircut and not thinking..."well it will grow out soon"!

Traci saved me from hair trauma. I had recently had a hair trauma (sure many of you can relate...) -- I saw a stylist I had trusted over the past two years (in a rural area where I live), supposedly trained in the Deva cut, but somehow she absolutely butchered my hair. Did all kinds of things wrong, ending me up with a big "step" in the front, ridiculous-looking "bangs", lots of "fish hooks", a big fuzz ball that was out of control... Before I went in, my hair was pretty smooth and non-frizzy and beautiful although a bit tangly -- I told her I just wanted a touch-up with minimal length taken off, and the result was a disaster that put me in tears for a week. My hair was completely unmanageable, both down and pulled back. It looked like a butcher job either way. I thought the only choices were to wear headscarves for months while it grew out, or to go a lot shorter to make it look somewhat civilized again. Then I realized I was visiting family in Seattle and could find someone from this site, so I did! Spex reviews looked wonderful so I got an appointment last-minute with Traci (thank GOD you were available that weekend). She immediately recognized everything that had gone wrong with the disaster cut and somehow, miraculously, was able to do a repair/recovery job that left me actually liking my hair again by the end of it. I have no idea how she managed to de-activate the catastrophe without barely taking any more length off but she managed to do so. It really seemed like a miracle. Plus her manner and personality lend themselves well to dealing with hair trauma victims. She also turned me on to some easy tips to make my hair more manageable. Thank you so much Traci!! I hope to be back some day! :D

I decided to go natural back in June of 2010 and for the last 8 months have been wearing my hair in a bun because I did not know what to do with it. I looked on this site and saw all the glowing reviews about Spex and especially about Tina. I was going to Seattle at the last minute and called to hope and pray Tina could get me in the next day. Well she was able to and I will say that it was the best decision of my hair life. Do not let Tina's looks fool you- she knows how to cut the curl!! Tina has the straightest hair known to man but she can cut the curl! She was awesome to say in the least. She sat down and talked with me about my hair and what would work best for me. She was very detailed in what she was going to do to my hair and I felt nothing but comfortable with her the whole time she was cutting- a huge first!!! I love my hair because of her and even though I live 5 hours away I am going to be going to her for my cuts without a doubt! Go to her- you will never think twice about your curls! Love Tina!!

I've been seeing Traci for about 9 months now and have had 3 cuts during that time. The first visit I was a little nervous because it seemed that she was taking a lot off. She used all DEVA products, which I love and have been using for years and she had her DEVA training certificate on the wall. I ended up LOVING that haircut. She styled it a little differently than I do so I wasn't sure that first day, but after I did my thing at home the day after it was all good. I have been back twice for trims/reshaping and have had great results. She even spent some time with me at my last visit playing with possible formal styles for an upcoming event, things I would be able to achieve on my own. It's a little more pricey than the last DEVA stylist I was seeing, but I don't care. I think Traci is worth it!

I discovered Tina when her name kept coming up as a great curly hair specialist, on this website, just over a year ago. Tina is amazingly great: she really understands curly hair--though hers is straight!--and she is extremely talented, not to mention quick and without "drama". I am not young, but my blonde hair gets rave reviews and positive comments several times each week, from other women and even from men who are much younger than me. Tina is fun to talk with, but again doesn't get dramatic about things. She is very real and very talented! I tell all my curly friends to go to Tina. April J.

When my regular stylist became so popular that it took 6 weeks or more to get an appointment, I decided to try Tina, based on the many positive reviews here. While I liked her and found her to be extremely personable, I was very disappointed with the cut and the experience. She cut my hair dry with a very light hand. (I realized later that she barely cut any hair off.) When I commented that I needed the front cut a little shorter, she texturized it instead. After she finished cutting, she never washed or even styled my hair. She sprayed some Deva stuff in it and sent me on my way with dirty hair. When I paid, the front desk person told me the cut was $50, which I thought was cheap but not unreasonable, due to the fact that I didn't get my hair washed or styled. I noticed the next day that the I had been charged $75 (plus tip), not $50. When I called and asked about it, the person I spoke with said the cut was $75 but she would check into it and call me back. I never heard back. I also realized the next day, after washing and styling my hair, that I had a terrible cut. My hair looked like a triangle and was completely flat on top. I felt like I gave Tina and Spa Blix the benefit of the doubt by calling them and giving them the opportunity to make things right. When I didn't even get a call back, I decided then and there never to stray from my regular stylist again.

She cuts each curl individually the way curly hair should be cut. Why pull hair straight and cut if straight's not how it naturally lies? I've seen a LOT of different stylists, but this was the best cut I've had - and she wasn't given a whole lot to work with either because the previous stylist had COMPLETELY botched it!
