Garrett isn't at Spalon anymore; he's at Spa Logic. Their phone number is (202) 232-6475.

I went to Garrett today and I had not idea that my hair could look so good. I've lost 2/3 of my hair due to illness and what was left looked... well, saying it was drab is putting it nicely. A short time with Garrett and it looks amazing. Not "as good as could be expecting"-amazing but actually really, seriously amazing. I used to have that old perm look that many 2B - 3A curlies know oh-so well. Not anymore!

Having never been to a salon in a big city I expected to spend way too much money than my hair or vanity is really worth. My belief was so wrong. I was out for less than $100, tip included.

Garrett has been my stylist for 9 years. He gives me a great haircut with layers that enhance my curls, but also look great when I decide to straighten my hair. I also regularly have Garrett blowout my hair. He doesn't use a flat iron, so my hair looks more natural and does not get damaged. When you go to a hair stylist, you put your trust in them. You trust that they will listen to you and what style you would like to achieve. I completely trust Garrett and have always been happy with how he handles my hair. I highly recommend Garrett Johnson for all hair types. For appointments, you can reach Garrett at 202-277-2769

I highly recommend that you visit him if you have hair, whether curly or straight. His number is (202) 277-2769.

Today I came with my mom to get a hair cut from Garrett. I read about him on naturallycurly.com and his reviews were fantastic. Our experience there lived up to our high expectations. When we walked in, Garrett started with a long consultation, asking about what my mom wanted from the cut and what length she was comfortable with. She talked to him about her issues with her current hair style and he offered his thought in a cut. Than she went to the shampoo and was not impressed but not disappointed. Right after starting the cut I realized his careful and precise work. He recommended types of products, but did not try to sell any in the salon. With only 1 product, Garrett transformed my moms hair. She loves her knew hair cut and would go back for sure!

I have lived in DMV area for 8 years and have not been able to find a stylist that will listen to what I want and actually be able to do it...until today. Garrett did EXACTLY what I wanted and it turned out great. I didn't take any pictures in I just described what I wanted and what I didn't want. I highly recommend him to anyone who has curly hair and who has struggled to find someone that can do what you are trying to imagine in your head!! He is also super sweet and has a great chair side conversation. I will be going back!!!

Garret did an amazing job on my curls today. He understood I wanted to keep as much length as possible, and proceeded to cut off all the dead, frizzy hair at the bottom. He shaped the rest, and I couldn't be happier. Thanks Garrett.

I worked in an Aveda salon for 7 years and was amazed that even though I was surrounded by great stylists, no one seemed comfortable cutting curly hair. Upon moving to VA I tried a few people who were supposed to be "curly hair" experts and was disappointed once again. Then I found Garrett, he was written up as a "curly hair specialist" in the CityPaper, and that he is. I have been going to him for about 3 years now and have never been disappointed. He cuts and colors my hair to perfection. I have lots of fine, highly textured curls, and with the wrong cut it can get extremely frizzy, but Garrett is a perfectionist. If he does not think it is laying right, he will re-do it until he is satisfied with the way it lays and curls. I couldn't recommend a better stylist for curly hair. Garrett is also very funny and has a good heart. He also is a talented photographer. Again, I would recommend him to anyone curly haired person looking for a good stylist.

When I first moved to this area in '98, I was so unhappy and frustrated trying to find someone local who could cut curly hair. I would fly home for the cut. Then I found Garrett. He not only listens, he gives good advice, knows what he's doing and can even understand the gibberish I sometimes spew when trying to communicate. Garrett not only knows hair he knows how the different stages a woman's body goes through affects hair growth. I have two small children. Garrett has enough experience cutting women's hair that he knew it would thicken during the pregnancy and then fall out after the birth. Garrett always makes sure I know what my hair will look like before he cuts it. He takes his time and does the job right. I have recommended him to friends and will continue to do so.

After trying so many salons, and being so frustrated with my hair, I found Garrett through this web site about four years ago. He may be a little unorthodox, but he does a great haircut. It sounds like he might have been off in April 2008 - but I can tell you he's giving great hair cuts for curly hair in Oct. 2009. I just had my haircut today, and it looks great, and my experience is it will stay looking good for many months. I find with his cuts that my hair grows out very well and I frequently go 4-5 months between haircuts. As for the debate on cutting hair wet or dry, check out https://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/curl-salons/the-kindest-cut-wet-dry-or-a-combination before writing off that he cuts hair wet.

After a few not so happy haircuts from Bang, I decided to take the recommendation of Garrett at Spalon. I was very dissapointed and upset with my experience. He claims to be an expert and he is far from it. I was growing my hair and now it is hanging around my chin. I look totally awful and fat and I am now depressed until I can grow it out again. This salon is GOD AWFUL> I will never go back.

This guy is not good with curly hair. First of all he cut my hair WET. Anyone who knows anything about curly hair knows it should be cut dry. Second of all, he DID NOT LISTEN! He may have a few good days but this day he clearly SUCKED! I will not go back.

I have finally found a stylist that actually LISTENED to me before he cut my hair!! Garrett was on time, personable, friendly, and the haircut didn't cost me an arm and a leg. He also took his time cutting my hair, and I didn't feel rushed AT ALL. I've had stylists who've cut my hair in 15 minutes and charged twice as much as Garrett did, while he spent an HOUR on my hair. My only tiny problem was that I wish he would have taken out a little more of the bulk--but, he explained that it wouldn't be wise to thin it out until it grew in more, considering the chop job I got last time (which I agreed and saw his point, seeing that I've been given "alfalfa" strands of hair on the top and in back of my head, thanks to other stylists in recent months). He's nice, my hair looks great and I will definitely be seeing him for a haircut again!

I can't believe anyone would think Garrett doesn't know how to cut curly hair. If it was a bad cut once, try him again. Everyone has a bad day. I've gone to Garrett for over 5 years and have NEVER had a bad cut. I have a lot of very thick curly hair. Sometimes I tell Garret what I want, but most of the time I tell him to do what he thinks is best - that's how much I trust him. Garrett also does great high-lighting - I've never been unhappy with that either. I agree Spalon is not an upscale salon, but then, neither are their prices. As long as the cut is good, the type of salon doesn't matter.

After my haircut with Garrett, I knew I had found someone who knew how to cut my kind of curly hair, which is thick and very curly. Prior to Garrett, I had gove to Beth at Fiddleheads 3 times, mainly because I wanted to believe that she knew what she was doing, what with all the DevaCurl products she sells and what is on this message board, but the truth is that she doesn't understand really curly hair, or how to listen to her customers. She basically gave me lampshade head and did not listen or care about my curly hair needs. Not to mention making me 2 hours late to work because she screwed up my highlights and kept having to fix them. You can imagine how upsetting that was. Garrett, who used to work with Beth, is the true curly hair guru. After trying out both, I have complete faith in Garrett. He evened out my layers, knowing right away that the cut I had was not right for my kind of curls. He understands the sensitivity of us curly heads, and he's also fun because he talks alot in a conversational manner, which i enjoy. Garrett is a gem.

The best curly-hair stylist in the area is Garrett Johnson, at Spalon. Before I started going to Garrett I spent many hours & dollars visiting stylist from Bethesda, G'town, Dupont, Upper N'west, and Norther Virginia. No one ever understood the way to cut curly hair. When I began going to Garrett when he first started at Spalon when he was in training, I knew that he and I were "meant" for each other. He's fun, quirky, and is a genius with curls---period. Plus, he's also an amazing colorist too, so I get one-stop-shopping. He even did my hair for my wedding, as well as all of my bridesmaids & relatives. I can be the biggest pain-in-the-butt client, but Garrett has the patience of a saint. He even has come to the salon after closing to "fix" my attempts at coloring my hair on my own---no complaints and no making fun of me...well, he sort of made fun of me, but I did have the hair color of Bozo the clown! He really is outstanding!

I recently moved to Chicago from DC. I used to go to Garrett all the time and was always very pleased with the results. While it is true that Spalon is not upscale, it's the haircut that mattered for me, not the salon. I plan on going back to Garrett when I visit DC. It's also true that Garrett tends to talk at rather than converse with his clients but I find that relaxing. I don't have to think to make conversation. He's done a fantastic job thinning out my thick curly hair and I have often gotten compliments on it. And he always offered to fix the cut if I was displeased, though I never took him up on it.

I've been very pleased with all the haircuts I've received from Garrett. Every time he has cut my hair, I've gotten totally unsolicited rave reviews from coworkers, family, and friends. I feel he's done a really great job of giving me a style that looks pulled together and suits me while working with, rather than fighting against, my curls. It can be difficult sometimes for curly hairstyles to look professional without looking messy, and Garrett accomplished that for me. He has always listened to what I had to say about what I wanted, and he remembers all the details from one visit to the next -- and I don't cut my hair that frequently! After a few more visits he never cut my hair right again. He kept telling me to come back and he would fix it but then he would call in sick. I used to have to wait two or three weeks to get in to him at the other salon and now he can take me whenever I want an appointment. This salon is a Haircuttery at best.
