I wanted to leave another review for Scott, as a follow up to my last one.

First off, if you can't get an appointment with him, maybe don't bash him online, and just look into finding a different curly hair stylist? There are many in the Raleigh-Durham area; there's no reason to be vindictive.

Anyways, I wanted to review my 2nd hair cut with Scott. Over the years I have come to realize that I need to be way more assertive when in the stylist's chair, so that definitely affected my last review which was years ago.

I asked for a trim and some shorter pieces to get more volume. He is great at communication and I never feel like my hair is at risk in his chair like I have felt with other stylists. He really trimmed my hair so I could keep growing it out- I think he took off about 1/2 an inch. In the past I have gone to stylists that take off multiple inches when I ask for a trim!!! (Ah!) And then he put in some shorter pieces just as I asked, and worked the rest of his magic.

This time I also showed him a photo of the style I wanted, and while he was cutting the shorter pieces I mentioned specifically that he could go shorter. He mentioned that he doesn't like to be aggressive with the short pieces unless a client asks for that, since most clients do not want the extra volume, which totally makes sense. I love my hair cut and I'm really glad I went back to Scott for this cut. I've learned by now that I need to be more specific in a stylist's chair (because I am extremely picky), and I need to come in with a concrete idea of the style I want for my hair so I can communicate that to the stylist.

Scott also styled my hair and gave me some tips for my particular problems like halo frizz and wanting more volume. He also gave me some new ideas for different products I can use. I am a huge product junkie, and I've been doing my own hair for 10 years now, so it was refreshing to get new information I could use from a stylist! And I left the salon with my hair looking awesome, which is a major plus for me because I didn't have to go home and bother with re-styling.

I've decided to only trust Scott with my hair cuts from now on as I grow out my hair. He is an excellent listener, and this was the best cut and style experience I've had so far. This is after trying several deva stylists and curly hair specialists in different locations. If you're looking for a curly hair expert in the Triangle, go to Scott.

I can't say enough about how I love the curly hair experience with Scott.  I spent my teen years trying to achieve Marsha Brady hair -- everyone else had it?  As I got older I learned to appreciate my natural curl and how easy my hair could be.  However, no one who cut my hair wanted me to embrace my curls.  I would get a hair cut, the stylist would straighten my hair, my husband would hate it, and I'd wash it to get my waves back.  I was always told to apply products on hair when it was almost dry, blowdry at the roots, fry and spray, fry and spray.  All of this was so WRONG for my hair!  Through Scott's instruction, I unlearned all this and realized that his methods make so much sense and they WORK!  I know that I can co-wash and go for a day to day look or I can enhance my curls with a bit more attention for a more sculpted look (as I have wavy curls).  If you think you are going to sit back and enjoy your hair being washed and nap while your hair is being done, be prepared.  You are going to class!  Scott teaches YOU how to do your hair.  He teaches you tricks to take care of the concerns that you have about your hair.  He is not pushy about products but will educate you on what's good and bad.  He is passionate about what he does so if you're not serious about your curls, don't waste his time.  I'll never go back to a normal salon again. Thank you Scott!

He has so much information about curly hair it's impossible to remember it all so not only does he show you how to do your own hair while sitting in his chair but he writes tips down for you to help you remember. I drove an hour and a half for my appointment and I won't ever hesitate to do it again! I will never let anyone touch my hair again!!! I have spent most of my life with a love/hate relationship with my hair. Everyone I have ever gone to NEVER could help me with what I was born with...curls. From the time I was a child, the easiest fix was to either relax my hair, blow it straight or put it in rollers. Now at almost 40, I was ready to go back to my roots and embrace my curls. Enter Scott Musgrave.

I stalked his Facebook for quite some time and before finally giving him a chance, armed myself with a bot of knowledge about curly hair in general. Because the truth is, even if you are born with it? Doesn't mean you know how to manage it. I needed a true professional to help me and initially I was very nervous. I didn't need to be. Scott was professional and easy-going and knows his stuff. He is there to make sure you understand why your hair does what it does and why all hair products are NOT created equal. I was amazed by some of the techniques. He showed me things that I would have never EVER done to my hair. When we were done? I was in love with my hair. And it only got better as the day wore on.

A true test with a stylist for me is whether I go to my car and want to "fix" my hair. I didn't. Another test for me in a curly state is usually putting my hair up by the end of the day because my hair has gotten too big. I didn't do that either. And on day 2? Still looked good.

Scott Musgrave is a guru and you will be amazed at the work he does and how your hair looks and feels. I look forward to many years of his magic on my hair.

I absolutely love my hair, Scott did a wonderful job. My curls are usually a frizzy mess. After my cut with no styling, my curls already looked immensely better. Scott started off talking with me about my routine and from that was able to suggest how to better handle my hair to get the look I'd prefer. I've never had a lesson during a haircut on how to handle curls. Great experience. I'd definitely recommend Scott to all the curly girls.

Scott is really nice and he does really great haircuts. He's been cutting hair dry since before DevaCuts were a thing. We got to chatting and I also learning that he's the head of a group of curly stylists, so you're definitely dealing with an expert here. I will say that at the beginning of my cut I said I wanted "short layers" and I only got long layers. I could have been more adamant about wanting more layers, but hey, I did mention it at the beginning. Also Scott's cuts cost about $100. But overall it was a great experience and the cut was great! I definitely recommend him.

Thank goodness SCOTT is the professional and was the voice of reason! He explained that I had "dry spots" of hair that needed extra conditioning & extra TLC, and cutting it off would not fix my problem. He showed me how to work with my problem areas and recommended the products he thought would work best. Well, I listened to him....now my hair is more manageable and the compliments from people haven't stopped! THANK YOU Scott!! Thank you for not letting me chop off my hair like I intended to do. (This is an update from my previous 4-star review of Scott about 7 months ago.) After my first hair cut with Scott, I wasn't 100% thrilled with the outcome because it was a little shorter than I wanted. I didn't mention anything to Scott afterwards, but he called me a week later to see how I was liking my cut (talk about caring for your customers!). I explained to him that it was shorter than I wanted, and he apologized sincerely and offered me a huge discount on my next visit. I knew already that I wanted to give Scott a second chance because he is a such a smart guy when it comes to curls. I'm so glad I did! On my second visit, Scott complimented me on how healthy my hair felt since I've switched to water soluble products. He explained how on my first visit my curls were weighed down by all the bad products I had been using and how this gave him a false idea of my curl spring factor. For my second cut, he spent nearly an hour shaping up my ends, adding a few stylistic elements, and left most of my length--all free of charge. I love my hair now! Scott listens to his customers and follows up to guarantee satisfaction. He's the only stylist I will allow to touch my curls.

I got my first curly cut yesterday, after much anticipation and anxiety. I've always been afraid of getting my hair cut because all of the places I've been to previously would blow it out straight or cut it wet (neither of which work for me!!) and I'd have to alter it myself once it went dry curly. This was a new experience and I am so grateful I took the chance. I went in to see Scott with fuzzy frizzy curls all over the place and no idea what to do with them. My hair was long 3C coily curls, down to the top of my bum even when it was dry. Scott took his time, going over my current routine, explaining how certain products/chemicals damage you hair, and finding a system that works for ME and MY hair. Very personable and unique to my style and preference. I came out of the appt with beautifully shaped and hydrated spiral curls, still long but definitely healthier than it has been. I also gained more knowledge in our 2hr session than I've accumulated over the last 29 yrs I've been working with this head of hair, and for that I am grateful. Thank you so much for education me on how to manage and embrace my curls Scott! There's no doubt you will be my stylist from now on!

Saw Scott today for my first Curl Cut! He is absolutely amazing! My hair was just below my shoulders when curly. I kept most of the length, but all the bulk is gone! It was definitely a different kind of cut...I had to lay back, flip my head forward, but the results are incredible. I've got so much more curl and wave! Even better than the cut were his styling tips and tricks. It was wonderful to learn how to wash, and condition, what good clean hair should feel like, and how to apply styling products to minimize the dreaded halo effect. My hair is frizz free, touchable, and awesome. Best of all is that his cuts are meant to last. I should be good for 4-6 months! I will definitely be back, and I'm looking forward to more good curly hair days thanks to Scott!

After my much anticipated appointment with Scott, I had mixed emotions. First of all, this guy knows his stuff. He is undoubtedly the expert in curls south of the Mason-Dixon. Going to his salon is like going to school. Scott takes the time to explain and illustrate every step of the cut and curl care process. His recommendation of products for me was spot on, and I loved the way they felt in my hair. On top of being super smart, he's just a nice guy--very down-to-earth, very personable. So why did I give him only a four-scissor rating? Because my hair is about 2 inches shorter than I wanted it to be. I asked him to cut it to where it touched my shoulders. It touches my shoulders enough--soaking wet. But when dry, it is way up by my chin. This means I'm going to have to straighten my hair for the first time in months so that I don't look like a poodle in my best friend's outdoor wedding this weekend. I don't even have enough to gather for an updo. (sniff) I know I will love it when it grows out, and I will most certainly be visiting him again in six months or so (however long it takes to grow it back out). Maybe it's just my karma with haircuts, but I would encourage prospective clients to be very clear about short or long they want their hair to be AFTER it dries.

scott is pretty darn wonderful. i had gotten a couple of cuts at the deva salon in new york and loved them, but 500 miles is a long way to go for a haircut. a year ago a curly acquaintance told me about scott, who is an easy drive from home, so i called and made an appt. he took amazing care with me - we talked for most of the 2 hours i was there, and he gave me a lovely longer cut that lasted for the better part of a year. a week after he cut my hair he called to check up on me, and we spent 30 minutes on the phone talking about product options - i was not feeling the deva i'd been using for years and he said another of his clients made her own flax seed gel, which i tried and now use on a regular basis. a few weeks ago i went back for my 2nd scott cut - shorter and rather snappy - and we used jessicurl products and a different application technique to help with my halo issues. again, he spent a couple of hours being my hair stylist/coach/therapist and sent me away with a cut, products and processes that i am delighted with. scott is amazingly helpful, accessible and positive - he is a pleasure to work with. highly recommended!

i recently moved to North Carolina from Los Angeles, and i had left behind my curly hair stylist! i was on a mission to find someone who specialized in the Deva cut and went on the Deva website to find someone near my new zip code. i came across Scot''s profile and gave him a call to set up an appointment. i considered myself to be a proficient user of the Deva products, since i have been using them religiously for over a year now. when i saw Scott, he taught me his own way of using the products to get rid of my halo frizz that i had such a hard time taming! his hair cutting technique is rather unorthodox, but i could tell that he was a stylist rebel with lots of knowledge to back it up. he also has curly hair himself, so it's refreshing to know that your stylist knows what YOU go through every day. i came in with long curly hair, so long it was grazing my shoulder blades. i knew how to take care of my curls, but i was looking for a cut with some texture and style. also, the heat and humidity was getting to this California girl, so i needed something that was shorter and easy to manage. i brought in a picture that i liked but it was far too "fashion" for me, cos i'm a busy mom to an active 2 year old and don't have the time to devote to styling my hair every day. Scott then showed me a picture with a cut similar to what i wanted and we went with that cut. so i sat in the chair, then i was reclining, then i had my head tipped forward. Scott uses these techniques to really get a feel for how your curls fall. it helps him to cut a beautiful, natural shape of your curls so that once the hair dries, it looks great just by virtue os its own natural body. then we did a wash, and he advised me on how much product to use and how to apply it to achieve the least frizz. i admit i was a little nervous at how much product he was using on me, but once the hair dried, it looked AMAZING! when all was said and done, i had a curly A-line bob. i have coveted this hairstyle ever since i was a teenager and i never thought i could have it done on my curly hair! it's shorter in the back than the front, and it has lots of texture and dimension. the next day was my daughter's birthday party and i got a ton of compliments on my new hairstyle! i highly recommend that you take your curls to Scott's studio. you WILL NOT be disappointed and will receive the attention your hair deserves and some valuable styling advice. your curls will thank you for it!

The time he took with me, the gentle expertise with which he handled my tresses, the variety of positions he had my head in to have the hair fall into trimming position, the flexibility in allowing and encouraging me to use my own products for the wash, his knowledge of the hair profession, hair types, and hair product types, a great sense of humor, being an excellent and caring listener, and a warm and friendly, yet professional attitude all added up to a PHENOMENAL experience with this intelligent hair specialist. He advised me that he would not have to touch my hair for another 8 months or so, and that between now and then I would know best when it needed to be trimmed again. I love that he boosts my confidence in my own ability to care for and tend to the needs of my hair! We curly girls NEED that. Scott is located in a very convenient location on the Raleigh/Cary border. His studio is within walking distance of all sorts of family and kid friendly attractions in case you bring along company that needs something to do besides wait on you (usually takes about 2 hours, give or take 30 minutes), although there is plenty of parking (go in the morning if you can, though). There is also a comfortable waiting room if your company decides to stay. He is very reachable, and responds promptly with texting, email, and phone calls, not to mention communication via his website and facebook page. I have never been willing to answer the questions like, "Who does your hair?" or, "Who's your stylist?" I am relieved beyond measure that I have finally found my curly hair specialist, Scott Musgrave, and consider his time a worthy investment in my curls. Thanks to Scott, I have even more pleasure in being a curly girl, and my curly tresses are lovelier than they have ever been. I am eternally grateful! Scott cut my hair for the first time about a month ago, and I LOVE what he did. I was looking for a change - I had very long hair and wanted to cut quite a bit off so that it was easier to maintain and style. I was also looking for a cut that was versatile enough for me to sometimes wear it straight if I wanted to. As much as I love to wear my hair curly, I sometimes felt locked into wearing it that way because the cut I had didn't look good brushed out. So it was either down and curly or up in a bun, and I wanted more options. It was time for the bun to go. Scott gave me some different options and we discussed the best course of action. When he could see that I was serious about wanting a big change, he cut about 8 inches off my hair and used some Deva products that I hadn't tried before to style it. I walked away feeling like I got a whole new look and all of the information I needed to keep styling it on my own. It looked (and still looks) fantastic, and I've gotten so many compliments on it. But the biggest and best surprise is that I now have great second day hair, and sometimes even great third day hair. I don't even remember the last time I was able to wear my hair down after sleeping on it. With this cut and the products, sometimes my second day hair is even better than the first day. Wow. I can't tell you how happy that makes me. Scott also took the time to follow up and see how I was doing with my new cut, and offered to give me free styling lessons or trim up anything I was unhappy with. I ended up not needing either, but the fact that he backed up his work like that was very impressive.

Stylist: Scott Musgrave

Scott has been doing my hair for over 5 yrs. In that time, I went from a short, pixie cut to growing my hair out and discovering that my hair was way more curly than I thought. He introduced me to DevaCare and I discovered that I can manage my hair with these great products. I can say that he has never one time steered me in the wrong direction. He knows hair and he gives an awesome cut. He also has curly hair, so he knows the trials we curly girls have and go through. :) So if you want an awesome cut and to learn how to manage your curly hair, I would have to say he is your guy!!!
