Design Essentials stylists at the Fall 2012 Taliah Waajid World Natural Hair Show

At the Taliah Waajid 15th Annual World Natural Hair Show, I had the pleasure of speaking with one of the featured stylists with Design Essentials, Diane Bailey, a stylist with 30 years of experience. I couldn’t wait to pick her brain about her thoughts on natural hair.

Diane explained to me that one of the biggest misconceptions with natural hair is that it is intrinsically strong. By its nature, natural/curly hair is very delicate and fragile, and takes a lot of care and maintenance.

One of the ways to take care of it is to make sure that you provide it with layers of moisture. Water is vital as a hydrator for the hair, but it can actually remove the natural moisture from your hair as it evaporates. This means we need to use products to not only impart moisture, but lock it in as well. Diane also explained that, while oils are popular in the natural hair care community as sealants, they are put to better use as lubricants (such as using coconut and almond oils for detangling”> or as a way to add nutrients.
