There is something for everyone in the natural hair community. Whether you are active, low maintenance, or experimental, there is something for you. An ongoing practice to reduce manipulation is protective styling, but when improperly installed and maintained, your hair and scalp can suffer. With so many women concerned about damaging their hair follicles, especially along the edges and nape, protective styles with extensions can seem counterproductive. And what about the fine-haired naturals who want to wear protective styles but fear breakage? Well this style in perfect for you. Rochelle, aka BlackOnyx77 from YouTube and CEO and founder of Alikay Naturals, just gave her subscribers the 411 on a new protective style that gives you the Havana twists style with only a 2-hour installation.

If you are apprehensive about the weight of Havana twists and the installation process, then try these crochet Havana twists called Mambo twists. Why are they a better alternative? Well, with Mambo twists you only have to cornrow your hair. Rochelle’s hair only required ten rows and eight packs of Janet Collection Havana Mambo Twist hair. Standard Havana twists require each twists to suspend from its own individual section, adding more tension all over the scalp. If you are suffering from traction alopecia and do not like the tension from individual twists, braids, or weaves, then this is a great option. Here are the tips that Rochelle has for us while we wait with anticipation for her to publish the installation video and how she washes synthetic hair to prevent a potential allergic reaction and dryness.

Before installing

  1. Deep condition with Alikay Naturals Honey & Sage Deep Conditioner for 1.5 hrs.
  2. Apply the Aloe Berry Styling Gel along the edges.
  3. Do the LOC method (coined by her”> using Lemongrass Leave-in Conditioner, Shea Yogurt Hair Moisturizer, and Shine Crave Hair Glosser in that order.
  4. Alternate the Essential 17 Hair Growth Oil and Botanicals Hair & Scalp Balm every other night.
  5. Sleep on a satin pillowcase. Trying to fit all of the hair in a satin bonnet can put tension on the scalp.
