When I think summertime I think glorious afros. All of the protective styling from the winter can leave you anxious to release your mane for the summer. Well, not so fast. Remember that the sun can be equally as drying as the winter. Although wearing an afro looks great, it may not be conducive to your summer plans. Here are reasons why you may want to opt for an updo.

  • High humidity and high dew points can cause shrinkage, which make for an annoying detangling session.
  • Overexposing your ends to the sun can leave them susceptible to dryness.
  • All of the heat will be trapped in your hair, leaving your head hot.

What You Need

  • Rat tail comb
  • Boar bristle brush
  • Moisturizer
  • 2 hair clamps
  • 2 hair ties
  • Bobby pin
  • Gel

Directions

  1. Create a u-shaped part in the front of your hair using the rat tail comb.
  2. Secure that front section with a hair clamp.
  3. Spritz hair with water and add moisturizer to make the hair more pliable.
  4. Apply gel and gently slick down the sides with a boar bristle brush.
  5. Part the hair from ear to ear and secure the hair near the nape with a hair clamp.
  6. Secure the center section with a hair tie.
  7. Remove the hair clamp near the nape, moisturize, add gel, and smooth it into another hair tie near the middle.
  8. Release the top section.
  9. Pull the hair upward, wind it twice like a Bantu knot, and then push the ends toward the base.
  10. Fasten a bobby pin near the puff at the back.
