(Wasn't sure my previous attempt made it through, here's hoping it does this time...) I'm doing a mommy makeover in preparation for a return to the workforce. Since this is such a high-stakes situation, I decided that this time I'd better do a bit of homework on hairstyles and stylists rather than just make my usual beeline to Fantastic Sam's. That's when I made the happy discovery that some stylists actually specialize in curly hair! Even though I live some distance from Lakewood, I decided to give Kristy/Studio K a try because I was encouraged by the positive reviews on this web site, and also because Kristy didn't seem to be a fanatical proponent of any particular curly-hair style ideology. I prepared for the appointment by scanning hairstyles on the web, but I still had a lot of trouble envisioning what I might want and what might even be possible for my dry, thin, frizzy, and falling-out-in-handfuls hair. I finally gave up and just made a laundry list of what I did/didn't want in a hairstyle. When we got to Studio K, my daughter miraculously found a magazine photo of a promising hairstyle. Kristy took my laundry list and morphed that photo into a much curlier version that looked completely natural on me. I was very nervous when she started frizzing my hair into a cloud and snipping away, but once she applied product and diffused, the final result was amazing. (Finally, not too short or too long! And who knew that I could have a cut that could be riotously curly or blown out straight?) I washed and styled my hair at home last night, and everything still looks great. The products Kristy recommended for home care are also a major improvement over what I had used previously. To say that I am immensely pleased with Kristy's work is an understatement. She is certainly skilled at cutting and styling curly hair. (She mentioned in passing that about 80% of her business is with curly hair, and it shows.) What also sets Kristy above many other stylists is that she also seems to have the rare and uncanny ability to accurately read a person and create a hairstyle on the fly that truly fits the person and the situation. I also liked the atmosphere of the Studio K salon -- very cozy and introvert-friendly. Kristy's assistant (whose name unfortunately escapes me) was also personable and helpful, and it even seemed like she was trying to discern the nature of my hair as she washed it. I thought that prices for the style/consultation and the hair products were fair and reasonable and as posted on the Studio K web site (http://www.studioklakewood.com/). I'll definitely be back the next time my hair needs care! (Even if I do need to plan ahead and make an appointment, since Kristy is much in demand.)

When I first left the salon I was freaking out because I felt my hair was too short! However after just one day of playing with my new hair cut, I loved it!! The cut really showcases my curl and is super easy to style. I will defiantly be going back to Kristy, just with a little more clarity on the desired length of my hair!

She has straight hair, which kind of surprised me, but don't let it scare you off--she knows what she's doing. Kristy asks a lot of questions, and respects your requests regarding your curls. She's the first stylist I ever encountered who knew about cowashing and didn't think flaxseed gel was weird. I LOVE my haircut.

I heard about Kristy from this site, and I'm glad I did. She really knows what she is doing and she takes an almost sculptural approach to curly hair, carefully cutting into the bulk to separate every curl. She is also very respectful of the CG method and actually asked me if I shampooed so she could "wash" my hair accordingly. All in all it was a good experience and the cut gave my waves and curls a bounciness I hadn't seen in awhile.

I first found out about Kristy from this site, and she recently opened her own salon. She really listens to me about my hair, how much upkeep I want to do (minimal!) and what challenges I have. Thanks to her skill, I've lived with evenly balanced beautiful curls for over two years.
