I want to start out by saying that Lara is AWESOME!!! She is the best hairdresser that I have ever had. I completely trust her with my hair because she does wonders with it. She takes her time and has so much pride in her work. I also really enjoy talking with Lara because she is so laid back and easy to talk to. I always have such a great time and leaving feeling so great!
I found Lara on this website one day when I made up my mind that I needed a change and was tired of my hair. I had long curly hair and it just felt heavy and did not want to curl as much as it used to. So I made an appointment with Lara. She gave me the best haircut that I had ever had. My curls did things I never knew they could. I received so many compliments about my hair. Lara also took the time to give me so many great tips on how to take care of my curly hair. Each time I can not wait to see Lara for my next haircut. I was also afraid to put color back into my hair because of so many bad experiences in the past, but I trust Lara so I decided to give it a try at my last appointment. Of course it looked amazing!!! I have received so many compliments on it. I can not wait to see Lara again in September to see what she will do next for my hair.
And for the person who was not happy with Lara's haircut maybe you should talk to her about it because she really does know what she is doing. I have long layered curly hair too, and she handles mine just beautifully. I know Lara would want to make it right for you. Madia

I highly recommend Lara for curly hair. She is very sweet and really embraces curls. She even tells me what she is doing and why she does it; I think this is very important because I get to know my hair that way. As far as the lady who didn't recommend her, I suggest letting your hair get accustomed to it's new cut. When I first starting embracing my curls I went to Lara for a hair cut. After my first hair cut with her, my curls had to "get used to" their new formation. After about a week or so, my hair looked better than ever. I couldn't believe how much my hair curled. I just got my hair cut again and it looks amazing. Thank you Lara!

I wouldn't recommend her for long, layered curls. After Lara cut my hair it no longer lays right. Curls don't blend into one another and there is one area of my hair that is bulky while another seems thin. She definitely did not blend or shape my curls very well. I wouldn't call her a curl specialist. She seemed to have her standard way of cutting hair and if your hair doesn't fit into this standard form she doesn't quite know what to do with it. That was the impression that I got.

I made an appointment with Lara based on the recommendation of my mother-in-law. I had been complaining about my hair for a LONG time and she finally recommended Lara. I was so impressed with Lara's knowledge and professional understanding of curly hair. I had been unhappy with my hair for years. All the stylists I saw did not fully understand my hair. In the past five years, I never left a salon with curly hair. The stylists all blew it out with a round brush. My cuts were never geared toward curly hair and I did not know how to style my own hair because no one had ever offered instruction. Lara changed all of that. I left that first appointment in love with my hair. I raved about it to anyone who would listen for weeks. If you have curly hair and don't love it, I highly recommend that you see Lara. I love the way that Lara cut my hair. It has never looked so good! Thank you Lara!

I decided to make my appointment with Lara at Salon de Lara/Contempo after reading all the wonderful reviews about her on NaturallyCurly.com. I am so happy that I did. I am a curly who is afraid to get her hair cut. I have never had a stylist that I have stuck with. I have always been searching and searching...trying desperately to find someone who knew how to cut my hair, understood my hair, made me feel comfortable, and look no more! I have found her! I was so happy that I made my next appointment that is coming up soon.
Lara really knows curly hair! I recommend her 100 percent if you are in the Ann Arbor area!

Lara is the absolute best! I met Lara when I was a student at U of M and knew right away that she is and always would be the very best stylist I would ever meet. She knows everything - the latest trends and how they fit with your personality, the best techniques, the best tips - AND she's totally fun and takes the time to listen to what style you want. I sadly moved away from Ann Arbor and MI, but I still go back to Lara every chance I get. Lara styled my hair and all of my bridesmaids at my wedding. I've tried numerous salons in the DC area and I can't find anyone that comes close to Lara - even if you have to drive an hour (or more) it's worth it - I fly over 500 miles!

I periodically check back at the Salon page to see if there are any new reviews, as I am a curly girl that is terrified of getting my hair cut. Lara was absolutely amazing....! I haven't had a stylist in more than 10 years, but I can finally say that I have find my stylist! First, Lara is a sweetheart, she made me feel so comfortable. I have been to so...many stylists in hopes that they would understand my hair, and she is the first out of all to have made me feel like she really wanted the best for my hair.
She is pro length, pro Curly Girl! Which is also a super plus! I will definitely be going back, and have already set up my appointment in January. Thank you Lara you are amazing!

I went to Lara about a month ago for my haircut, and had a great experience. I found her through this website, and all the reviews were positive, so I thought I'd give it a whirl. Before going to Lara, I hadn't ever had a good curly cut, but I own and had read Curly Girl, so I knew what curly cuts should be. Lara's very sweet and personable, and she made me feel comfortable right away. She spent time carefully looking at my hair structure and asking about my hair care routine. She is pro-length, which I was glad for, and she gave my curls a nice, even cut. I came away with good tips for curl care, a good cut, and a smile. I would recommend her, even if it was on the pricey side at $65. She's well-trained and experienced, so I felt that it was worth the money, especially since I'll only need to go every three months or so. Two thumbs up.

I first went to Lara late last year. I have thick, curly hair which tend to get frizzy. She first studied my hair, then asked me what i wanted it to look like. She really took the time and interest to listen to what i wanted and went ahead and gave me a fabulous cut. It was exactly the look i was after and the cut seemed to tame my curls and make them more manageable. I did not go to Lara again for 6 months. She had given me such a wonderful haircut that the longer my hair grew, the better it looked! The next time i went to her, i was also looking to color my hair. The problem was that i had tried different hair coloring treatments over the course of those 6 months and now my hair was a mess-- it was 1 part henna, 1 part drug-store color and 1 part gray! I also seemed to have had a reaction with the drug store color and was looking for an organic, all-natural color. I talked to Lara about it. She told me that she did not carry an organic line but would look into it for me. A week later she called me and told me that she had found the perfect product for me and was going to purchase and carry the whole line because of me--i was stunned and touched that she would go to all that trouble, not to mention the expense, for just 1 customer! Now, that's what i call customer service! She is very dedicated to her customers and does what is in their best interests. She is also good at researching evolving techniques and keeping herself informed about new developments in her field of expertise. In order to remove the henna from my hair, she did the "vodka treatment" on my hair. I had never heard of anything like that, neither had some of her coworkers, but she had put in hours of her personal time to figure out how she could get my hair back to looking natural and fabulous. The vodka dissolved the remaining henna in my hair. After the organic color treatment, my hair looks all natural and all one solid color instead of 3 different shades. I appreciate all her efforts in helping me look my best and i recommend anyone looking for great customer service and fabulous haircuts to go to her at least one time. They will never go anywhere else again!

I started going to Lara at about age 25. Up to that point in my life I had always just straightened my hair because if I didn't it had this weird wave effect that never looked nice. In my 1st appointment with her she asked how much time I like to spend on my hair and my life style. After discussing this she asked how often I wore my hair curly and I shared what I said above. She asked me if she could show me how curly my hair really was. She went to town and started cutting my hair, blow dried it and turned me around. I can not tell you how stunned I was to find out I had CURLY hair! Since that day I have always gone to Lara, following her to her new salon and always letting her do what she thinks would be best. She has earned my trust and my hair looks great.
I was on an airplane and the flight attendant saw me while she was making the security announcements. She completely started stumbling over the words they say a million times and we were all laughing. She came up to me afterward and told me she screwed up because she loved my hair. She was based out of Nashville, but flew the Detroit run frequently and wanted to see to my hair dresser. She also had curly hair and could not find someone in Nashville that could make her curly hair look good.
The other thing I love about Lara is I always ask her for tips on styling and products and she is happy and willing to share new ideas.
(By the way she blows it out beautifully straight when I come in for a different look.)
I can't say enough about this lovely lady and the quality work she does.

The original curly girl herself, Lara, is awesome at keeping up to date with trainings, trends and making any age look fabulous. Lara recommended the Curly Girl book to me recently, and now I am happily (and finally) going with it. I spent years asking her to give me the best blow out of my life, and of course it would never look good again until I went back. She has been encouraging me to embrace the curls for years. She has trained at the Sahag school in NYC, and is always going to national conferences (at her own expense) to see the latest and greatest. Add to that her crazy (somewhat granola) personality, and it's always fun to go in for a cut and color. I read some of the other reviews of Ann Arbor stylists, so just want to add that Lara loves and encourages longer hair! Not to mention the fabulous little bonus of a shoulder and neck massage before she styles! She is new to Contempo, and Salon de Lara is her big new venture into her own business, currently a space in Contempo. Contempo has a full salon /spa and a little shopping boutique and coffee bar with a cafe. Please check her out. It's worth it.
