I am a college student heading into my second year of school. I have been natural all my life. My hair has been all different lengths, I can remember it being down my back and right by my ears. Debbie did an amazing job. I could not believe it. I keep my hair natural all year around and the only time that I use to get it straightened was when my old stylist hair to straightened it  to trim my hair. Debbie is a life saver. She was the best stylist I have ever had to touch my curls. She also is very funny and gives amazing advise. I will now be seeing her for my trims. She is amazing. It was a life chancing experience.

When I started doing research on salons in the Cleveland area that understood curly hair, this page of reviews was by far the most helpful. I also noticed that out of over 200 reviews (as of this date) there is only one other that was written by someone with type-4 hair. As someone with mostly-4b hair (4b/4a/4c, in that order), I thought I should put in my two cents in to help any other type-4's reading this down the road.

I went to see Sandy twice: first for a haircut consultation and later for a basic wash and style. Something else you should know about me: I can count on one hand the number of times I've been to a salon in the last 10 years. So when I say that from the first visit she made me feel very comfortable both about her cutting my hair (I decided against it because on that day of all days it had actually dried into the shape I was planning to have her cut it in) but also about how she would take care of it...believe me, this was a BIG deal for me. It also motivated me to come back for what they call a "curly style," which was basically wet styling using Deva products (No Poo, One Condition, and Ultra Defining Gel).

Another positive thing about this experience was the ability to both get feedback about my own routine and to gain some new tips from a pro. Sandy used A LOT of conditioner and gel on my hair and she really raked them through. I never considered my hair to be "rakeable," so to speak, and I was a little nervous, but she was able to finally get her fingers through with little resistance. She then put me under one of those dryers that looks like a cluster of desk fans around your head, and finished off with the diffuser, using high heat with regular cool shots. She also put clips in my part for more volume, and gave me some to take home; I still haven't gotten the hang of those yet.

I liked the final result: My hair was more rounded and 'fro-like than I was used to, but it was a very natural look, with softly defined coils. It also felt really nice. Literally the only downside to this visit was that there was product residue that never really went away; it wasn't immediately obvious but there was a very fine white powder throughout that I ended up having to wash out. They use other product lines besides Deva so I think I'd like to try a different line the next time. Beyond that, this will definitely be where my next haircut takes place, whenever that is.

I think my first time was in high school and she has cut my hair ever since ( through medical school,exams, etc etc)   Debbie does such a fantastic job, I honestly could not trust anyone else with my hair . I am livid about my haircut. ATTN THICK and CURLY/FRIZZY hair: I've literally had better haircuts from great clips. First, I usually wear my hair straight and long because Ive had it short and its just an afro or mushroom shape. I was growing my hair out and wanted to keep growing out but lose the density. I literally said I want to keep the length just give it a little shape. The whole process was like a bush being wacked and that's how it turned out. Too layer so my length is gone and it looks like a mushroom. I was so excited to treat myself to a specialty curly hair cut because I was finally liking it curly but it needed some shape. This was a huge mistake and i miss my old hair wish I got it just trimmed.

Debbie understands curly hair! For years I was insecure and embarrassed about my curly hair and spent most of my years in high school hiding my curls with the help of a flat iron. Then I met Debbie... She taught me how to embrace my curls rather than trying to make them disappear. Debbie spends a good amount of time consulting me before each cut to best understand what I am looking for. Once I moved away from Cleveland for college, I began my search in various cities to try and find another hair stylist that truly understands how curly hair needs to be cut. Bottom line- there just doesn't seem to be any other stylists I've encountered in the past five years that I feel comfortable returning to. I now live in Washington DC and still make my trek back to Debbie 4-6 times a year to get a great haircut. If you're new to the curly girl cut or a long time supporter, I can say with no hesitation that you will walk away loving your curls once you're finished with Debbie. She is very detailed and precise and knows her client's hair (for example, I always have these long curls in the back of my head that seem to loosen throughout the day causing them to hang longer than most of my hair- Debbie always remembers these curls and makes sure to cut them a bit shorter each time to help eliminate them from becoming a problem in the future). Debbie was a great find and someone I highly recommend- I cannot sing her praises enough!

Sandy is simply wonderful! I have been growing out my curls for over a year now. Sandy always listens to what I have to say. Every time I go in for a Curly girl cut, she trims my hair just the way I ask. If you ask her to do it, then she will. She is a great listener. She also gives great tips on how to style hair and wash it. I recommended her to my friend who has curly hair and she loves her as well. The best stylist at this salon :)

Thanks to Debbie I finally like my curls. I found out about Debbie by stopping a woman in Target and asking where she got her hair styled. I made an appointment with Debbie actually not having too many expectations. As anyone with curly hair knows, it is very hard to find someone who understands the difficulties of cutting our hair. I was surprised the second we met. She asked questions about me and my lifestlye. After the cut she actually took the time to show me techniques on how to style and dry my hair at home. I highly recommend Debbie. I am so happy that I have finally found my stylist!

I have never been a regular for cut and or color, and I don't like to spend time fixing it. I am shake and go type. That has worked for me for years. As I have gotten older and my hair has changed a bit the cut and other things have become more important. The recommendation for Debbie came from someone who's hair is very similar to mine in texture, color and curl. I went to my first appointment with high expectations and after 10 + years with the same person. Debbie did not disappoint. My first cut was fabulous. Starting with her good natured attitude all the way through to my hair doing what it does best with more consistent results and not a ridiculous amount of added effort. The whole color 'bar' experience was very impressive, and again, Debbie came through with professionalism and the right suggestions. I leave Santo's every time feeling like Debbie knows me and my hair better than I do. I have and will continue to recommend her to anyone with the slightest bit of body to their hair. I just made my 4th trip back to Debbie at Santo Salon and I was thrilled with the results as always! It had been a while since my last cut (a year!) and my hair still held its shape and style. It was much longer than I usually wear it and Debbie really had her work cut out for her. She took so much time with me like she always does and I left with an awesome haircut and a smile on my face. Not only does Debbie cut my curly hair curl-by-curl, she discusses products, how to clip the top and drying technique. She also is a blast to talk with. She is the most down to earth, easy to talk with person I ever had the pleasure of knowing. I have never been able to go that long without getting my hair cut until I met Debbie. Her cuts are perfect and the shape will last. I HIGHLY recommend Debbie and the Santo Salon. Every person that works there is so pleasant. I can't say enough about how satisfied I am with Debbie and her ability to cut naturaly curly hair. I stopped hot ironing my natural curls about 4 years ago but could not find a stylist to work with the curl the way Debbie does. I love my curls now! It took 51 years to say that but finally, someone who knows what they are doing when it comes to natural curl. And, I love going to Santos because there are alot of clients there who also have natural curly hair and are choosing to embrace them instead of flat ironing them.

I can't begin to say how long I have fought my frizzy hair. I feel like I spent much of my life trying to straighten my hair. I got Sandy's name from a friend of mine who has amazing curly hair and decided to stop fighting it and make an appointment. I must say, I never thought I would like my hair, but can honestly say I love it now. I feel like this has been such a freeing experience. Sandy has trained in New York to learn how to handle curly hair and gave me the best cut I have ever had. It was quite an education to learn so much about my hair, and not the negatives! I found Sandys name on this site and decided to make an appt. I was extremely happy from the moment I walked in to the moment I walked out. Sandy did an amazing job on my hair. I have never had anyone take the time on my hair and talk to me about my concerns (I am thinning a bit) as she has. She gave me a fabulous cut, I could tell right away. I learned which products were right for me and have since really been loving the Deva products I purchased. The salon itself is pretty amazing and I have been spreading the word to my friends about my wonderful experience. This is what going to the salon should be like! I am 18 years old and I have always hated my hair due to its out of control curls. I have always dreaded haircuts because they served as reminders of how desperately I wished for straight hair. I have never worn my hair down in my life, I have always tucked it away in a tight and boring bun. Today I had my very first Curly Girl Haircut with Debbie and was blown away. It wasn't just a haircut, but an incredible learning experience. Debbie taught me how to manage my curls from the moment I wash them to the moment they are dry. I'm a waist-length wavy. I made an appointment with Sandy in Nov 2011 based on the reviews that I read. I have to say, I was very disappointed when I walked out and, months later, still not happy with the results. Sandy eliminated all of my layers, which has resulted in me having triangle-head (flat up top and lots of curl and volume at the bottom). I have given up on spending the time to diffuse, since I know it's going to look bad any way that it's styled. With regards to the way she applied product and diffused, all I can say is that I left the salon looking like I had strings hanging off of my head. Sandy is very sweet and likeable, but I wasted my money that day and have had to deal with continuous bad hair days since my visit.

Let me start by saying that I never, ever write reviews online - so that means you know this salon is worth going to! I just left Santo's and I am amazed at the outcome from my stylist, Debbie. Last year, I was a wishful curly girl and thought I would try the Keratin Treatment in the effort of not having to battle the Ohio summer humidity. I got the treatment done at another salon, and loved it at first. However, as time went on I had no volume whatsoever and even to this day my hair has not returned to it pre-keratin state. I told Debbie about all of my worries: lack of volume, my curls were not where they used to be, and no stylist knowing how to cut curly hair even if they claim to be a specialist. She first asked about me, my life, and my hair. I have never, ever in a salon felt so doted on. Kudos to Debbie and the rest of the staff at Santos for actually being good at what they claim to do!! I will absolutely be returning to this salon for more curly girl cuts!

Sandry may seem like a curl expert to those who don't know any better (AKA those who got their first curl cut at Santo) but I normally get my hair cut by a fabulous stylist in another city. Sandy does a cookie-cutter cut that doesn't work for everyone and DOESN'T LISTEN to the client, because she just assumes you don't know as much about it as she does. I was very disappointed in my cut and I almost cried afterward. She made my hair look flat and lifeless. I will be making the drive out of town to my usual stylist to try to rectify the damage, and in the future so that I don't have to go to Sandy at Santo again.

I went to Santo Salon by a referral and was very pleased with Sandy. She really took the time to talk to me during a consultation and put my mind at ease. I have seen Sandy at Santo Salon for a few years and have been very happy every time I leave. I love the dry curly cut and how the products make my hair feel. Sandy is always good about giving me useful tips I can use at home. I always give out Sandys name, and tell them to try the salon. Sandy really listens to my struggles with my graying curly hair. She has found ways to cut and style it to really fit with my active, no fussing lifestyle and gives me good advice about how to work with my hair as it is beginning to gray. She is a godsend after years of struggling with cookie cutter hair stylists. She is a real professional. I have been to many salons as we all have. Santo Salon seems to specialize in curly hair. It seemed like all of the clients had curly hair at one point. I love going to get my hair cut now, in a place that makes me feel like I am in good hands, as I know I am. Sandy does a great job with my curly hair and does a dry cut. Before going to Santos, I had never even heard of cutting curly hair dry. I am so pleased with the results. The staff is also very friendly and accommodating.

If you haven't been to Santos, you need to go and see Sandy. She is great at making a head of frizz into a head of shiny curls. I always leave taking away a little bit of knowledge which really helps with my day to day style. I know she has done a lot of training for curly hair and it really shows. After many years of hating my wavy but frizzy and unmanageable hair which was always wet-cut too short by stylists who did not understand wavy/curly hair, I discovered Sandy Marino and Santo Salon thanks to this web site. My first visit was for a consultation only as I was very apprehensive about having a curly cut. Sandy spent an hour with me, educating me about the nature of curly hair and how it should be cut, styled and maintained. She discussed hair products and which ingredients could be harmful and why. She introduced me to the absolutely best hair dryer and diffuser on the planet. She answered each and every one of my very long list of questions. Later, she phoned me at home to ask if I had any additional questions or concerns. Finally, last summer I took the plunge and let Sandy give me my first curly cut which changed my life. I now look years younger, no longer worry about weather frizzing my hair and cannot imagine life without my curls or Sandy. Look, we all have horror stories of our quest to find someone to properly cut curly hair. I even traveled to Columbus from Cleveland for 3 years to get my hair cut! From one (of the many) conversations you find yourself in with a fellow curly girl, I was told about Santo Salon and their knowledge of cutting curly hair . . . so I thought, what do I have to loose? I could save travel time, gas and a lot of aggravation. When I moved from MI to OH last year I was scared to death. Who was going to cut my culy hair? Thanks to nacturallycurly.com I found Sandy. She is amazing! She listens to what I want and does it. Although I'm not a fan of the curly girl products I love the cut and color. Santos does cost about twice my hometown salon but it's still a lot less then driving 5 hours home to get my hair cut. Debbie has been trained in Deva cuts and does an outstanding job with her clients. Her cuts consist of little snips on dry hair which makes curls spring to life. She is very warm, friendly, knowledgeable on products and hair. Debbie listens to her clients needs and cuts accordingly. I drive 2.5 hrs. for her cuts and it is always worth the trip!

I went to the Santo Salon and Spa in Pepper Pike (formerly in Beachwood) today and had the most wonderful experience. It was the first time I'd ever gotten a Curly Girl cut and it won't be my last. Sandy really took her time in talking to me about what I wanted. She has a warm and friendly presence and checked in every step of the way. Her product knowledge is excellent and she really showed me how to maintain the look I walked out of the salon with. I now have a cut that I can take from the gym to the red carpet. Oh yeah...I no longer live in Ohio (I've resided in Los Angeles for the last 10 years) but will definitely be going back to Sandy whenever I come to visit my family. I would recommended Sandy to any woman of any ethnicity with any type of curly hair. She's fantastic all the way around. (The spa itself is also beautiful and the staff there really goes the extra mile show that your business is appreciated...I love that!)

Another great haircut from Debbie this weekend. I always dread making a 2.5 hr. drive to Beachwood but my hair never looks better than when she gives me a "Curly Girl" cut. Debbie is friendly, listens well, offers suggestions and knows curly hair. The new salon is also gorgeous inside. I highly recommend a visit to Debbie if you need a haircut which truly makes your curls pop!

I went to Santo Salon last week for my big chop after 16 months of transitioning. I was a little apprehensive initially because although all of the reviews that I'd read on this site were positive, none of them were from women with 4a/4b hair. I must say that I was pleasantly surprised!! Sandy was wonderful. She knew exactly what I wanted. She gave me a curly girl cut. She always checked to make sure I was comfortable with what she was doing. My hair looked gorgeous!! I will definitely be returning for trims, etc.

I went to Santo Salon a couple of weeks ago and got the Curly Girl cut. I haven't had a haircut in a year and this was my first visit to Santo Salon. First let me compliment Sandy. She was so informative and friendly that I was instantly at ease. She also has beautiful, curly hair and I knew that was a plus. She cut my hair, curl by curl, and used Deva products. I have been following the curly girl method for a year also, so I was pleased with the no sulphate products being used. I absolutely love my new cut. Sandy didn't cut any more length off than I requested and she showed me a better way to put clips in to give me some height on top. I'm getting pretty good at clipping now! My hair is so much more manageable. The entire experience was wonderful and the whole staff is so friendly. I will definitely go back.

I went to get my hair cut the "curly girl" way today. It has been over a year since my last hair cut. I avoid getting it cut due to my fear of salons messing up my hair. I read all the great reviews of Debbie on here so I decided to give her a try. She cut my hair perfectly and listened to everything I liked and disliked about my hair and she listened and made sure to follow my tastes. She cut my curls one by one and made sure to shape my hair just as I had asked. She also made sure not to cut off more than I had wanted. I've been doing the curly girl method since March so I've grown accustomed to the products I use and the methods and I've gotten beautiful, clumpy, frizz-free curls from it. My only critique of Debbie would be that she touched my hair too much before it was dry, and I think this made it bigger and the curls less defined than I'm used to having. I did, however, purchase the DevaCurl ArcAngel Gel, which really enhanced my curls and made them smell great! I definitely recommend Debbie for a curly girl haircut!

I went to this salon based on the reader comments from this site and I am so glad I did! I've never had my hair cut especially for my curls- stylists usually just straighten my hair and never work WITH my curls. But going to Santo was so different. My stylist was Michelle and she was great. She discussed my hair issues with me and we talked about the problems I've been having with my curls. My hair was too long, dry, and frizz-prone. I told Michelle I wanted my hair totally cut off, showed her some pictures for inspiration, and she took it from there. Throughout the cut and style, she gave me tips on how to do my hair, how often to wash it, how to style it, etc. Michelle was so informative and understanding. I will definitely be going back to see her in a few weeks!

I went to Debbie for my first ever 'curly girl' hair cut and style. I read other reviews here and had to try this salon and Debbie. I am completely new at this curly girl thing and I am so glad I got connected to this salon and to this excellent person who really knows her curls. She too is a curly girl. I have short hair and am of the 'mature' group of ladies, being age 64. First she talked at length with me taking time to show me a whole set of photos of just curly girl hair styles and together we decided what was going to work for me and she got an idea what I liked too. She cut my curls dry, and one at a time. Then to the 'cleansing bowl' and she used Deva products, starting with Low-Poo, she had a special way of handling the curls even when they were wet so as not to cause frizzies. She used One Condition and was advising me on how I should put this in my hair so as not to disturb the curls. Then she used paper towel to gently dry the hair a little. she said I should use a cotton t-shirt at home to gently blot the wet hair after wetting and conditioning. She followed with AnGell to define the curls and Set It Free -- all Deva products. She used little hair clips on the crown to lift up some of the curls so they would dry with some height there. I sat under a heat lamp with very low flow of air. When I was finished she showed me how to finish the look by shaking the curls. I was so impressed with her knowledge of the Curly Girl method of cutting. She never rushed with me, and gave me endless information and tips. I will be returning in a few weeks to have color done by her. I am so happy to have been introduced to this great way to make my curls look so much better. I have never had such a great hair cut! Hands down, I recommed this salon and this hairdresser. The cost was in line with what I had been paying in a salon that had no idea how to really treat and handle curly hair. Fantastic, and I will be back.

This is the second time I've visited Santo Salon and both times was pleased. Sandy was very knowledgeable, friendly and gave me a great cut. She was very helpful with product information and practical! I watched many curly girls getting cuts while my hair was drying and they all looked great. Although I LOVE going to Devachan in NYC, Sandy gave me a comparable cut and actually better finish than I've had at Devachan in NYC. I would highly recommend Sandy and will return.

Debbie is fantastic! I have been growing my hair out for two years. At the start of this epic, I visited Debbie and her magic Shears. Debbie used the CG cutting technique and my hair has never looked better. Its grown a lot and Debbie never cuts too much, just enough to clean it up and define my curls. She is a genius. Debbie is a genius! I am remiss in not writing sooner. I have been a client for a couple of years now. I have grown my hair out from 2 inches all over to bsl when dry! Debbie has been there each step of the way, shaping, styling and helping me with my grow out. My curls have great shape and length. The girl knows what she is doing!! Debbie 'painted' in some highlights on my last visit (pintura) and I love them. My hair is still healthy and shiny. She knows the Curly Girl technique inside and out! Its funny, you know you are right where you should be when you see a worn and very used copy of Lorraine Massey's book for Curly Girls at her salon station. I am never nervous going to Debbie, just excited knowing that my hair will never be cut too short or too weird or too whatever-just great haircuts, everytime!

I was really nervous about having my curls cut "one curl at a time," but I must say the results are amazing! Sandy was very friendly (and she has curly hair herself!) and really understood my frustration of one bad cut after another! after cutting my hair, she put in some highlights and much needed low lights and my hair is just beautiful! It was a little more expensive then what im use to paying but worth every penny! this was a birthday/christmas present from my husband who tried to take me to new york one year to go to Quidads for my birthday but we couldnt affor it~ this was the next best thing and i will defintely be back!

I've had 3 haircuts from Debbie now, and they are absolutely the best haircuts I've ever had in my life. She is trained in the Devachan method outlined in the "Curly Girl" book. She cuts the hair dry, washes it, and then fine-tunes the cut. She cuts each curl individually. Before I went to her, I struggled with the fact that my hair needed layers to have some style, but those layers often wound up as uneven chunks of hair that didn't lay right and looked like big dog ears. Even worse, I've had some haircuts from h*ll, where I've had to basically put it in a clip and let it grow out for a year or two, which is not especially flattering. But not any more. Since Debbie cuts each curl individually, there are no "steps" or uneven "poofs". Also, so many stylists cut hair in a way that requires blow drying and styling - but I always let my hair air dry. Debbie's cuts are tailored to air dry in the hair's natural curl pattern - and the curls lay really beautifully when they are cut this way. The DevaCurl products are very moisturizing and great for curly hair. I especially like the "One" conditioner. Debbie is very nice and friendly, and puts you at ease. She takes the time to teach you the tricks to make your hair look its best. Although the cut cost more than twice what I've ever paid for a haircut before, it was definitely worth every penny. She is the only person who I will ever to go to get my hair cut again in the foreseeable future. If you are looking for someone to transform your curls with most amazing haircut you have ever had - Debbie is the person to see.

Best cut and color I've ever had! Debbie totally knows her stuff. She not only knows how to cut curly hair but gives a style that flatters the face and explains how to take care of curly hair. I love the color as well. She has gone through extensive training several times at the Devachan Salon in N.Y. I look forward to years of healthy looking hair now instead of split ends and dryness due to abuse from trying to straighten. I found Debbie via the Devachan website listing of Curly Girl trained consultants. I drove 4 hours from Fort Wayne,IN and it was worth every minute. Having discovered the CG method nearly 5 years ago, Debbie was the first stylist I'd found practicing the CG method. She listened to my hair story, shared her hair story, gave my curls the cut they needed and deserve, gave me the best color I've ever had, and taught me how to properly care for my curls. Debbie's enthusiasm for curly hair is obvious. She's warm, personable, and made me feel like I've know her longer than the 3 1/2 hours I spent with her. I've found a new stylist and friedn, and I will return!
