After going through dozens of stylists and many bad haircuts, I finally found someone who truly understands curly hair. Cala has been cutting my hair for years. Even after moving out of Beverly, I make a special, out of the way trip, and plan to keep doing so. I'm spoiled by her amazing skill and can't imagine letting someone else cut my hair.

I have 12 year old twin girls who have a variety of anxiety and sensory issues. They have wavy hair that is becoming progressively curlier as they get older. Sarah has been cutting their hair for several years. She's very calm and accommodating and goes out of her way to make them comfortable. Ashley was supposed to refreshen and fix damaged ends on a deva curl cut that I got at a different salon, 7 months prior. Cala Renee herself has an excellent reputation. I have since found out that Ashley did not do a real Deva cut, although, I asked and paid for one. It was a different method than the first one and she cut off my spiral curls that had formed as my hair grew long. Instead of cutting the individual curls at a 45 degree angle in their natural state like it was supposed to be done, she pulled out my hair to 90 degrees straight out and trimmed off my dry ends, creating layers that has changed the shaped to pyramid, when I was growing it long. The big, individual curls are gone now. Once she shampooed, conditioned and dried it, I should have wrestled the scissors from her, but she had already started one side. It was too late. She started cutting fine hairs all over my head, forming an afro helmet shape. I am now stuck with a halo of short, frizzy flyaways all over my head. She tucked my hair under with gel (she doesn't believe in using more than a squirt of curl supercream, unlike a real deva cut says to use) and when I got home I found little knots on the end of one side, which was longer, so I had to trim that side myself! I have no idea what to do at this point. Chop it off and start over after it had been growing for over a year??

Cala is by far the best stylist I have ever been to. My hair is finally @it's potential. She cuts every curl to fit like a puzzle. The shampoo girl massages your head so awesome I almost fell asleep. I made a promise to myself that I would never again go to another stylist she is my muse for life. If you have curly/wavy hair and live near Beverly definitely check out this salon you will not regret it and your hair will love you for it.

Sarah isn't merely a stylist, she's an artist. I went from loathing my hair to loving it, solely because of her. I knew I was in good hands when she spent FOREVER getting to know me, my lifestyle, preferences and my curls before going near her scissors. She's not only gifted at what she does, she truly listens. Yesterday, I had my first Deva Cut at Cala Renee Salon. I'm still in shock... for the first time in my life, I don't hate my hair the next day!
Sarah took the time to really look at my hair before she began cutting; she asked me a lot of questions about what products I used, how I used them, lifestyle, as well as the look and length I would be most happy with. While products were discussed and suggested, I never felt she was pushing additional products. She answered all of my questions about using products, and what type may work best for my hair type and the look I wanted. She cut, then cleansed, conditioned, added product and sat me under the bonnet dryer for a bit to dry somewhat, then cut again.
The cut is perfect -- exactly what I wanted in that it takes full advantage of my natural curl, and is well-shaped for my face. As previously stated, I'm in shock -- normally, I spend the next week trying to modify my hair to fit a cut and this time, it was still looking pretty good when I got out of bed. As is my habit after a haircut, I did wash my hair today and used the procedures shown by Sarah. And -- wonder of wonders -- the cut is STILL perfect -- actually may be better, thanks to our relative humidity today. I did add one extra product to my regimen (that Sarah said I didn't really need, by the way, but might help my late afternoon slump) and saw an immediate improvement. My hair is soft, bouncy, full -- not sticky or heavy -- and my daughter says it looks great and suits my personality.
Pros: Easy to find; good prices on both services and products; very accommodating (the fit me in before an upcoming trip); extremely knowledgeable and highly skilled staff; no heavy upselling or uber-pushing of products and/or services; great customer service and follow-up: I got a call the day before the appointment as a reminder (THANK YOU!), and an email thanking me within an hour after the end of my appointment.
Cons: The coffee could be better <grin> Maybe get a Keurig?

Sarah and the Cala Renee salon completely embody the Lorraine Massey Curly Girl system. They truly understand curly hair and know just how to cut and style it to release its full potential. Sarah took the time to find out what I was looking for and cut my hair dry, just like Lorraine Massey says to do. She explained all the Deva products, which, by the way, really do work and are worth the money. I also got an awesome shampoo/head massage from the assistant, Nicole, who also explained the products she was using. I highly recommend Cala Renee salon and Sarah. My hair used to be very curly when I was younger, and then after I had my baby it straightened out some and got flat and frizzy. This cut revived my curls! Sarah thinks that after my hair adjusts, it will become even curlier again. Thanks Cala Renee! I will definitely be back.

Cala cut my wavy hair earlier this month, and I could not be happier with my haircut. I hadn't had a real cut in quite some time, and my hair looked great. I let her make most of the decisions about my cut (I didn't have strong opinions regarding length or style, so I gave her a lot of freedom). It looks fuller and healthier.
However, while I loved my cut, I really hated the Deva products. My hair looked dry and crunchy when I left the salon and got worse as the day progressed, and I hated the way it felt. I much prefer my own cheap, drugstore products. However, I would highly recommend Cala for a fabulous curly cut!

I give every place at least two visits before I write a review. I have tried other Deva stylists closer to home, and they just did not fully understand the concept of dry cutting. I have seen Cala at Cala Renee twice for Deva cuts, and she is has given me a great cut each time. (I have also seen Erin once as well, and she did a great job too) I did decide to go back after the second visit to have the back layers brought up slightly - lets be honest, the way we style our hair is different than the way others style it. The way I was styling it, I felt a little bulky in the back. I went back to the salon, and she adjusted it perfectly. I'm very happy with this salon - I believe they have the most combined experience in the Boston area when it comes to curly hair.
The only con I can think of is the parking, it is street metered parking, so, fair warning.

I love Cala Renee salon so much that I return there for my haircuts even though I'm now going to school near Albany, NY. After having lived in Boston for 5 years and gotten a number of bad haircuts and some good, really expensive, cuts, I discovered Cala Renee and fell in love. The salon is super cute and extremely clean and organized, the shampoo room downstairs is cozy and spa-like, and everyone there is really, really nice. Erin is great as a stylist, she listens to what you say and stays within your comfort zone. My first cut she told me she'd be more conservative with the layers, and if I liked it we could try more of them the next time, and we did, and my hair looks great! She also listened to my product needs, and recommended a deva product that really worked for me (but was not pushy about it at all!) My only tiny complaint is that my most recent cut is at a length that isn't incredibly flattering for my face shape... but the hair itself is curly and frizz-free!

I got a DevaCut here last month, and it was a great experience. Sarah listened to what I wanted in my haircut and talked me through the process of cutting and styling. I learned many valuable styling tips from this appointment. I have switched over to DevaCurl products now, and now that I'm using them as the stylist instructed (and with my excellent haircut!), my hair looks much better than it did before I went to this salon. I came to see Erin from a referral from a friend after many years of getting the wrong cut not to mention pressure for a blow out after it all was done. I have always wanted to love my curls and love what I have but never found the right fit UNTIL I met Erin at Cala Renee!
I was blown away at how patient and interested she was about what I wanted from my hair. She started our time together by getting to know me and my hair. I was so impressed with this and it made me realize she was really going to help me bring out the beauty in my hair. She worked with me based off of what I felt and thought not what she thought I should do. This client based approach was soooo refreshing! She walked me through all the steps with the DevaCurl products and even wrote it all down for me. She was never pushy with selling me the products but when it was all over she didn't need to be. When I flipped my hair over that last time I actually got weepy...seriously! I was in total shock that that was my hair!!! The cut was perfect and I felt I and my curls were celebrated. I have finally found MY salon, stylist and products! I have been able to see Erin another time since and it was even better! She knows her craft so well and is such a people person without being too chatty or pushy! Erin and what she had taught me has not only changed my hair but how I feel about it. I am presuming that 5 is the highest rating I can give. If I could, I would give Erin a 10! I came to her a few years ago at the prompting of a family friend who had just gotten her (extremely curly) hair done by Erin for her college graduation. It was beautiful, and she just raved and raved about Erin, so I thought, "what the heck?" My curly hair had been out of control for so long, I had really given up hope. I even saw a so-called "curly hair specialist" at another salon in Beverly several years back, HOWEVER their idea of specializing in curly hair was to straighten it.

55 years of living in denial of my curls, 55 years of lye treatments, ironing, extremely short haircuts just to be able to manage my blessed hair. FINALLY! I was led to Cala. She immediately knew all I've been through. She showed me how my curls can work in my favor, easily and timely. She showed me what a new color would do for my ego (or what was left of it). She patiently guided me into the world of Deva and I've never regretted one minute of it. I will NOT go back to the other stylists who told me that "curl experts" were a con and not for real. I will only trust one place to cut my hair & that is Cala Renee Salon. I have spent so much money on getting my hair cut at so called "A+" salons. None of them even come close to Cala's scissors. She didn't get into that pretentiousness that one would find at other places. Her professionalism and expertise were what made me feel at ease. I wasn't forced to talk or chit chat (I am very quiet when getting my hair cut because I'm so nervous!), but with Cala, I was totally at ease. When she cut my hair the first time, I was speechless - for real! She did what no one else could - cut curly hair without stripping it with shampoos and combing (yes, with a fine toothed comb) it out. She let it do it's own thing - she's like the "curl whisperer!" They took the time to show me how to cleanse, style and really take care of my unruly curls, which have actually been under control since my first visit there. Oh my. What a wonderful experience. A dry hair cut, lopping off those unruly curls that never do what they're supposed to do - something you'd never notice during a wet haircut! I was totally sold on the whole Deva line of products while they were using them - they smelled good, they felt good on my hair, and they had the potential to make my curls look better than they ever have. My hair wasn't as curly as it normally can be when I left the salon - I attribute that to the clarifying shampoo they used to give me a reset. Never fear, a few days of humidity, and I had my old curls back, only they were new, improved, moisturized, and darn near frizzless. It has been 11 days since my haircut and I love how my hair looks. Cala and crew made sure I knew what they were doing with the products, and taught me how to use them once I got home. I've nearly weaned myself completely from my hair dryer, too! I would recommend this salon to any curly haired girl, and I will continue to return here for my cuts and colors in the future.

I found this salon on naturallycurly.com and found the amazing reviews. I started going to Erin back in March. Before my first DevaCut, my curly hair was frizzy and the curls were a mess. Since March 2009, I have gone back 3 times and every time I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my curls. I used to hate my curly hair and wanted to straighten it often but now, my curls actually look amazing. Erin does not pressure me to try a new cut or style. She actually said that my hair looks better longer so she made amazing layers by cutting it dry. My curls love it. I had been bouncing around to different salons in the Boston area, and spent A LOT of money on products and cuts, trying to find someone who could make my hair look good. After a lot of wasted time, I went last weekend for a Deva cut with Erin, and it was the best haircut of my 30 years. This is extra important, because I'm getting married in the spring, and was desperate to find someone who could tame and shape my fine, curly, color-treated hair. I have posted once before about how amazing Cala is with curly hair. I had my 3rd appointment with Cala a few weeks ago and I just had to post again. I LOVE my hair! The first two cuts we just trimmed the ends and shaped it up really well. But this time I wanted a change. Cala had recently cut her hair quite a bit shorter and it looked amazing. So when she asked me if we were just trimming I said no, I wanted her to cut my hair shorter. I haven't had a short curly style for over 15 years. It would always turn into a poof-ball. Well not this time. It looks AMAZING! I now have a wonderfully shaped curly bob that's cut to about an inch or so above my shoulder. Not only is it fun and sexy, it's also much more professional than the length I had been wearing it (about 2-3 inches below my shoulders.) It also seems to make my face look thinner and I have been told it makes me look younger. Now I am only 32 so I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing, but everyone just keeps telling me how great it looks. My husband told me daily for at least a week how much he liked it. Me and my curls are very happy and it's all thanks to Cala.

I just had my first DevaCut by Erin today and I have to say I couldn't be happier with it! I must admit, I was a bit skeptical coming into the whole situation. I thought it would be just another regular haircut that I wouldn't be crazy about. She soooo proved me wrong. Just had my DevaCut today with Erin.
She was awesome. I'll definitely be going to her from now on. She took all the time needed to tame my mane and she explained everything as she went along. I was very skeptical of the whole thing. I thought it would just be another haircut, but she proved me wrong.
She gave me such beautiful curls and a wonderful shape to my hair, I just love it!
I've been to many salons and this by far was the best haircut I've had. It's wonderful to actually walk out of a salon and have fabulous hair. No running home to wash and redo.

I saw the raves for Cala, the owner of Cala Renee Salon and tried to get a Saturday appointment with her. She was booked more than a month in advance so I made an appointment with Erin, who recently completed the Lorraine Massey "curly girl" training. For the first time in my life, I got a haircut that is actually intended for my kind of hair (somewhere between wavy and curly). Erin was sweet and attentive and took the time to explain each step. Now my hair looks even better the 2nd day (after I've slept on it!).

I was so excited to find the Cala Renee Salon. Back in January I had purchased the book "Curly Girl" and had been following the care instructions for corkscrew curls. While I was looking for salon recommendations I found this website and saw a lot of other recommendations for Cala. She trained in NY under the woman who wrote "Curly Girl". So I made an appointment for this past Saturday. Well all I can say is it was the best hair cut I have ever had. Normally when I leave a salon the first thing I do is fuss with my hair because while the cut may have been ok, there is always something wrong with how it was styled. This was the first time ever that I did not feel the need to fuss with my hair after I left the salon. And because Cala explained every step of what she was doing while she was styling it I was able to duplicate the look the next day. So if you have naturally curly hair of any kind I would definitely call and make an appointment with Cala.

I lived in NYC for many years and went to both Ouidad & Devachan for my cuts. When I moved to Cambridge, I thought I'd have to pay the airfare back to NYC a few times a year to keep up with my curls.
BUT - I found Cala and make the trip from Cambridge to Beverly (about 45-1 hour) to get my haircut 3-4x/year. She's amazing - quick, reasonable, the best! If you're not close to Beverly, it may very well be worth the trip!

After a lifetime of bad haircuts I was schlepping from Boston to Devachan in NYC twice a year for healing. When grad school began I sniffed around Boston and am thrilled to say Cala Renee is everything her awesome reviews suggest. It's the closest I've had to a Deva cut - she's done their training - but at half the cost and no bus required. The cut grows out really well, too. If you don't have a car, consider joining Zipcar; it's worth it for this appointment two or three times a year. Finally, manageable hair again so close to home! Make sure to ask for the Deva cut as it's her area of super expertise. And she's booking a month ahead now so call early!

I haven't been to a Salon in years, all for the typical curly girl reason, when I went to see Cala for a consultation. OH MY GOD!!!, Cala made me feel so comfortable about her cutting my hair that I set up an appointment for the following week. So, I went to her she did an AWSOME job on my hair. When I got home my family said "only you could get a hair cut and come home with it looking longer that when you left." I thought that was great because with kinky hair like mine having an inch removed looks like I had 6 inches removed. Because of all of the information that Cala gave me during the process my hair is better than ever. I will ALWAYS send my fellow curly girls to Cala.

Look no further. Book an appointment with Cala. She is not only warm and welcoming (no Newbury Street hoity-toity crap) but she is a master of her craft. From the second I stepped into her salon, I knew I was safe. Not one moment of panic while sitting in her chair. She took her time to really study my hair and then, like a magician, cut pieces of it here and there while dry and brought my curls to life. Next, she washed it, put in just the right amount of product (no helmet head, thank you) and sat me under a dryer to wait for the results. When it was dry, she examined it like an artist, made a few additional snips here and there and wa-lah - I had a beautiful, new head of hair. I am 35 years old and have never felt more peaceful during a haircut. I left feeling totally satisifed and like a woman with a new lease on life! She is WELL worth the journey. On a side note, her right hand woman, Erin, is a doll and the two of them make a wonderful team.

I finally have a curly cut. Cala was wonderful.I was asked to wash and let my hair dry naturally with no product before I came in for my cut. My normally wavy hair almost looked straight and I was beginning to think I was wasting both Cala's and my time. Cala examined my hair and cut it dry.

Cala shared just three new tips with me about how to handle my curly hair and I will never subject my hair to blow-dry "torching" again! Cala listened to my "whine" about my dry, brittle, unmanageable mane and the result was a shaping and product application that made all the difference in the world!

Ashley was supposed to refreshen and fix damaged ends on a deva curl cut that I got at a different salon, 7 months prior. Cala Renee herself has an excellent reputation. I have since found out that Ashley did not do a real Deva cut, although, I asked and paid for one. It was a different method than the first one and she cut off my spiral curls that had formed as my hair grew long. Instead of cutting the individual curls at a 45 degree angle in their natural state like it was supposed to be done, she pulled out my hair to 90 degrees straight out and trimmed off my dry ends, creating layers that has changed the shaped to pyramid, when I was growing it long. The big, individual curls are gone now. Once she shampooed, conditioned and dried it, I should have wrestled the scissors from her, but she had already started one side. It was too late. She started cutting fine hairs all over my head, forming an afro helmet shape. I am now stuck with a halo of short, frizzy flyaways all over my head. She tucked my hair under with gel (she doesn't believe in using more than a squirt of curl supercream, unlike a real deva cut says to use) and when I got home I found little knots on the end of one side, which was longer, so I had to trim that side myself! I have no idea what to do at this point. Chop it off and start over after it had been growing for over a year??

Cala is by far the best stylist I have ever been to. My hair is finally @it's potential. She cuts every curl to fit like a puzzle. The shampoo girl massages your head so awesome I almost fell asleep. I made a promise to myself that I would never again go to another stylist she is my muse for life. Yesterday, I had my first Deva Cut at Cala Renee Salon. I'm still in shock... for the first time in my life, I don't hate my hair the next day! Sarah took the time to really look at my hair before she began cutting; she asked me a lot of questions about what products I used, how I used them, lifestyle, as well as the look and length I would be most happy with. While products were discussed and suggested, I never felt she was pushing additional products. She answered all of my questions about using products, and what type may work best for my hair type and the look I wanted. She cut, then cleansed, conditioned, added product and sat me under the bonnet dryer for a bit to dry somewhat, then cut again. The cut is perfect -- exactly what I wanted in that it takes full advantage of my natural curl, and is well-shaped for my face. As previously stated, I'm in shock -- normally, I spend the next week trying to modify my hair to fit a cut and this time, it was still looking pretty good when I got out of bed. As is my habit after a haircut, I did wash my hair today and used the procedures shown by Sarah. And -- wonder of wonders -- the cut is STILL perfect -- actually may be better, thanks to our relative humidity today. I did add one extra product to my regimen (that Sarah said I didn't really need, by the way, but might help my late afternoon slump) and saw an immediate improvement. My hair is soft, bouncy, full -- not sticky or heavy -- and my daughter says it looks great and suits my personality. Pros: Easy to find; good prices on both services and products; very accommodating (the fit me in before an upcoming trip); extremely knowledgeable and highly skilled staff; no heavy upselling or uber-pushing of products and/or services; great customer service and follow-up: I got a call the day before the appointment as a reminder (THANK YOU!), and an email thanking me within an hour after the end of my appointment. Cons: The coffee could be better <grin> Maybe get a Keurig?

Sarah and the Cala Renee salon completely embody the Lorraine Massey Curly Girl system. They truly understand curly hair and know just how to cut and style it to release its full potential. Sarah took the time to find out what I was looking for and cut my hair dry, just like Lorraine Massey says to do. She explained all the Deva products, which, by the way, really do work and are worth the money. I also got an awesome shampoo/head massage from the assistant, Nicole, who also explained the products she was using. I highly recommend Cala Renee salon and Sarah. My hair used to be very curly when I was younger, and then after I had my baby it straightened out some and got flat and frizzy. This cut revived my curls! Cala cut my wavy hair earlier this month, and I could not be happier with my haircut. I hadn't had a real cut in quite some time, and my hair looked great. I let her make most of the decisions about my cut (I didn't have strong opinions regarding length or style, so I gave her a lot of freedom). It looks fuller and healthier. However, while I loved my cut, I really hated the Deva products. My hair looked dry and crunchy when I left the salon and got worse as the day progressed, and I hated the way it felt. I much prefer my own cheap, drugstore products. However, I would highly recommend Cala for a fabulous curly cut!

I give every place at least two visits before I write a review. I have tried other Deva stylists closer to home, and they just did not fully understand the concept of dry cutting. I have seen Cala at Cala Renee twice for Deva cuts, and she is has given me a great cut each time. (I have also seen Erin once as well, and she did a great job too) I did decide to go back after the second visit to have the back layers brought up slightly - lets be honest, the way we style our hair is different than the way others style it. The way I was styling it, I felt a little bulky in the back. I went back to the salon, and she adjusted it perfectly. I'm very happy with this salon - I believe they have the most combined experience in the Boston area when it comes to curly hair. The only con I can think of is the parking, it is street metered parking, so, fair warning.

I love Cala Renee salon so much that I return there for my haircuts even though I'm now going to school near Albany, NY. After having lived in Boston for 5 years and gotten a number of bad haircuts and some good, really expensive, cuts, I discovered Cala Renee and fell in love. The salon is super cute and extremely clean and organized, the shampoo room downstairs is cozy and spa-like, and everyone there is really, really nice. Erin is great as a stylist, she listens to what you say and stays within your comfort zone. My first cut she told me she'd be more conservative with the layers, and if I liked it we could try more of them the next time, and we did, and my hair looks great! She also listened to my product needs, and recommended a deva product that really worked for me (but was not pushy about it at all!) My only tiny complaint is that my most recent cut is at a length that isn't incredibly flattering for my face shape... but the hair itself is curly and frizz-free!

Carla is the best curly hair stylist I have ever been to. I used to go to a Ouidad Salon but was always disappointed because my cuts were always uneven & had wads of hair products from leave in conditioner & hair styling gel. When I got home I couldn"t wait to wash my hair. I needed to find another curly hair salon & this wonderful website; naturallycurly.com gave me the tools & info I needed. After reading many reviews I decided to give Carla Renee a try & her numerous reviews from past clients were right. When I read about dry haircuts I had to go-I have always felt curly hair needed to be cut dry because of the many curl factors involved yet I could never get a stylist to cut my hair without wetting it. I got a DevaCut here last month, and it was a great experience. Sarah listened to what I wanted in my haircut and talked me through the process of cutting and styling. I learned many valuable styling tips from this appointment. I have switched over to DevaCurl products now, and now that I'm using them as the stylist instructed (and with my excellent haircut!), my hair looks much better than it did before I went to this salon. The stylist obviously knew what she was doing and could answer all of my curly hair questions, and I got a great haircut, so I would definitely recommend this salon and stylist!

I came to see Erin from a referral from a friend after many years of getting the wrong cut not to mention pressure for a blow out after it all was done. I have always wanted to love my curls and love what I have but never found the right fit UNTIL I met Erin at Cala Renee! I was blown away at how patient and interested she was about what I wanted from my hair. She started our time together by getting to know me and my hair. I was so impressed with this and it made me realize she was really going to help me bring out the beauty in my hair. She worked with me based off of what I felt and thought not what she thought I should do. This client based approach was soooo refreshing! She walked me through all the steps with the DevaCurl products and even wrote it all down for me. She was never pushy with selling me the products but when it was all over she didn't need to be. When I flipped my hair over that last time I actually got weepy...seriously! I was in total shock that that was my hair!!! The cut was perfect and I felt I and my curls were celebrated. I have finally found MY salon, stylist and products! I have been able to see Erin another time since and it was even better! She knows her craft so well and is such a people person without being too chatty or pushy! Erin and what she had taught me has not only changed my hair but how I feel about it. I am presuming that 5 is the highest rating I can give. If I could, I would give Erin a 10! I came to her a few years ago at the prompting of a family friend who had just gotten her (extremely curly) hair done by Erin for her college graduation. It was beautiful, and she just raved and raved about Erin, so I thought, "what the heck?" My curly hair had been out of control for so long, I had really given up hope. I even saw a so-called "curly hair specialist" at another salon in Beverly several years back, HOWEVER their idea of specializing in curly hair was to straighten it. 55 years of living in denial of my curls, 55 years of lye treatments, ironing, extremely short haircuts just to be able to manage my blessed hair. FINALLY! I was led to Cala. She immediately knew all I've been through. She showed me how my curls can work in my favor, easily and timely. She showed me what a new color would do for my ego (or what was left of it). She patiently guided me into the world of Deva and I've never regretted one minute of it. I will NOT go back to the other stylists who told me that "curl experts" were a con and not for real. I will only trust one place to cut my hair & that is Cala Renee Salon. I have spent so much money on getting my hair cut at so called "A+" salons. None of them even come close to Cala's scissors. She didn't get into that pretentiousness that one would find at other places. Her professionalism and expertise were what made me feel at ease. I wasn't forced to talk or chit chat (I am very quiet when getting my hair cut because I'm so nervous!), but with Cala, I was totally at ease. When she cut my hair the first time, I was speechless - for real! She did what no one else could - cut curly hair without stripping it with shampoos and combing (yes, with a fine toothed comb) it out. She let it do it's own thing - she's like the "curl whisperer!" They took the time to show me how to cleanse, style and really take care of my unruly curls, which have actually been under control since my first visit there. Oh my. What a wonderful experience. A dry hair cut, lopping off those unruly curls that never do what they're supposed to do - something you'd never notice during a wet haircut! I was totally sold on the whole Deva line of products while they were using them - they smelled good, they felt good on my hair, and they had the potential to make my curls look better than they ever have. My hair wasn't as curly as it normally can be when I left the salon - I attribute that to the clarifying shampoo they used to give me a reset. Never fear, a few days of humidity, and I had my old curls back, only they were new, improved, moisturized, and darn near frizzless. It has been 11 days since my haircut and I love how my hair looks. Cala and crew made sure I knew what they were doing with the products, and taught me how to use them once I got home. I've nearly weaned myself completely from my hair dryer, too! I would recommend this salon to any curly haired girl, and I will continue to return here for my cuts and colors in the future.

I found this salon on naturallycurly.com and found the amazing reviews. I started going to Erin back in March. Before my first DevaCut, my curly hair was frizzy and the curls were a mess. Since March 2009, I have gone back 3 times and every time I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my curls. I used to hate my curly hair and wanted to straighten it often but now, my curls actually look amazing. Erin does not pressure me to try a new cut or style. She actually said that my hair looks better longer so she made amazing layers by cutting it dry. My curls love it. The Deva products are excellent and Erin is great to talk to about other products too. She knows curly hair and I keep going back for more.

Erin is amazing! I took my bi-racial 3 year old daughter for her first hair cut there. She hates me doing her hair, so I was nervous. Erin was great!! She cut her hair, dry, then washed it, conditioned it, combed it, and dried it. Her hair looked beautiful and my daughter loved the experience. Erin was full of useful information about how to care for very curly hair, and made my daughter, and my whole family, completely at ease. I will definitely go back there. I have wavy hair and never found a stylist who knew what to do with my hair until I found Cala. Cala turned me on to the Deva hair products and gave me the right cut, and for the first time in my life I like my hair! I also like the natural color line she uses. It doesn't have the harsh chemicals that would dry out my hair. I still get excellent coverage and my hair feels healthier.

I am sorry that a couple of you have not had great experiences, I have been going to Cala for over 2 years now and I could not Be happier! I absolutely love hoow my hair curls and the color is always perfect. If you haven'y been in since October, go in, with the staff and new lower level you will be in for a treat! I've been to Erin....gosh, I lost count. But I have to say, she does not dissappoint! EVER! I went for another DevaCut and decided to go for a Deva Deep Treatment too. Oh My Lord! My hair came out soooo shiny and looked amazing! It is now...3 days later and I still have sooo much shine. I totally recommend Erin and the Deva Deep Treatment. I so am doing this treatment every time I go for a cut now.

Not impressed with this Salon. Maybe they just don't understand wavy hair. I tried them 2X and was dissapointed BOTH times. They only cut the top layer and left the rest of my hair as it was.

Here I am 38 years old, and didn't realize I had curly hair! I thought my hair texture was 'frizzy.' I happened upon this website, got the book, went to Cala. I LOVE my hair now and have gotten so many compliments. Cala and her staff were so welcoming, professional, and most importantly, they really know what they are doing. I have "2a" type, so I was thinking a curly girl cut wouldn't really make that big of a difference, but Cala did a terrific job of cutting and explaining how to style. I recommend her highly.

I had been bouncing around to different salons in the Boston area, and spent A LOT of money on products and cuts, trying to find someone who could make my hair look good. After a lot of wasted time, I went last weekend for a Deva cut with Erin, and it was the best haircut of my 30 years. This is extra important, because I'm getting married in the spring, and was desperate to find someone who could tame and shape my fine, curly, color-treated hair. Erin was amazing, patient, and explained the whole process, giving me her card and encouraging me to call with any questions. Would highly recommend seeing Erin, even if it is a hike from where you live--it is SO worth it!

I have posted once before about how amazing Cala is with curly hair. I had my 3rd appointment with Cala a few weeks ago and I just had to post again. I LOVE my hair! The first two cuts we just trimmed the ends and shaped it up really well. But this time I wanted a change. Cala had recently cut her hair quite a bit shorter and it looked amazing. So when she asked me if we were just trimming I said no, I wanted her to cut my hair shorter. I haven't had a short curly style for over 15 years. It would always turn into a poof-ball. Well not this time. It looks AMAZING! I now have a wonderfully shaped curly bob that's cut to about an inch or so above my shoulder. Not only is it fun and sexy, it's also much more professional than the length I had been wearing it (about 2-3 inches below my shoulders.) It also seems to make my face look thinner and I have been told it makes me look younger. Now I am only 32 so I'm not sure if that is a good or bad thing, but everyone just keeps telling me how great it looks. My husband told me daily for at least a week how much he liked it. Me and my curls are very happy and it's all thanks to Cala.

I just had my first DevaCut by Erin today and I have to say I couldn't be happier with it! I must admit, I was a bit skeptical coming into the whole situation. I thought it would be just another regular haircut that I wouldn't be crazy about. She soooo proved me wrong. Just had my DevaCut today with Erin. She was awesome. I'll definitely be going to her from now on. She took all the time needed to tame my mane and she explained everything as she went along. I was very skeptical of the whole thing. I thought it would just be another haircut, but she proved me wrong. She gave me such beautiful curls and a wonderful shape to my hair, I just love it! I've been to many salons and this by far was the best haircut I've had. It's wonderful to actually walk out of a salon and have fabulous hair. No running home to wash and redo. I saw the raves for Cala, the owner of Cala Renee Salon and tried to get a Saturday appointment with her. She was booked more than a month in advance so I made an appointment with Erin, who recently completed the Lorraine Massey "curly girl" training. For the first time in my life, I got a haircut that is actually intended for my kind of hair (somewhere between wavy and curly). Erin was sweet and attentive and took the time to explain each step. Now my hair looks even better the 2nd day (after I've slept on it!).

I was so excited to find the Cala Renee Salon. Back in January I had purchased the book "Curly Girl" and had been following the care instructions for corkscrew curls. While I was looking for salon recommendations I found this website and saw a lot of other recommendations for Cala. She trained in NY under the woman who wrote "Curly Girl". So I made an appointment for this past Saturday. Well all I can say is it was the best hair cut I have ever had. Normally when I leave a salon the first thing I do is fuss with my hair because while the cut may have been ok, there is always something wrong with how it was styled. This was the first time ever that I did not feel the need to fuss with my hair after I left the salon. And because Cala explained every step of what she was doing while she was styling it I was able to duplicate the look the next day. So if you have naturally curly hair of any kind I would definitely call and make an appointment with Cala.

I lived in NYC for many years and went to both Ouidad & Devachan for my cuts. When I moved to Cambridge, I thought I'd have to pay the airfare back to NYC a few times a year to keep up with my curls. BUT - I found Cala and make the trip from Cambridge to Beverly (about 45-1 hour) to get my haircut 3-4x/year. She's amazing - quick, reasonable, the best! If you're not close to Beverly, it may very well be worth the trip!

After a lifetime of bad haircuts I was schlepping from Boston to Devachan in NYC twice a year for healing. When grad school began I sniffed around Boston and am thrilled to say Cala Renee is everything her awesome reviews suggest. It's the closest I've had to a Deva cut - she's done their training - but at half the cost and no bus required. The cut grows out really well, too. If you don't have a car, consider joining Zipcar; it's worth it for this appointment two or three times a year. Finally, manageable hair again so close to home! Make sure to ask for the Deva cut as it's her area of super expertise. And she's booking a month ahead now so call early!

I haven't been to a Salon in years, all for the typical curly girl reason, when I went to see Cala for a consultation. OH MY GOD!!!, Cala made me feel so comfortable about her cutting my hair that I set up an appointment for the following week. So, I went to her she did an AWSOME job on my hair. When I got home my family said "only you could get a hair cut and come home with it looking longer that when you left." I thought that was great because with kinky hair like mine having an inch removed looks like I had 6 inches removed. Because of all of the information that Cala gave me during the process my hair is better than ever. I will ALWAYS send my fellow curly girls to Cala.

Look no further. Book an appointment with Cala. She is not only warm and welcoming (no Newbury Street hoity-toity crap) but she is a master of her craft. From the second I stepped into her salon, I knew I was safe. Not one moment of panic while sitting in her chair. She took her time to really study my hair and then, like a magician, cut pieces of it here and there while dry and brought my curls to life. Next, she washed it, put in just the right amount of product (no helmet head, thank you) and sat me under a dryer to wait for the results. When it was dry, she examined it like an artist, made a few additional snips here and there and wa-lah - I had a beautiful, new head of hair. I am 35 years old and have never felt more peaceful during a haircut. I left feeling totally satisifed and like a woman with a new lease on life! She is WELL worth the journey. On a side note, her right hand woman, Erin, is a doll and the two of them make a wonderful team.

I finally have a curly cut. Cala was wonderful.I was asked to wash and let my hair dry naturally with no product before I came in for my cut. My normally wavy hair almost looked straight and I was beginning to think I was wasting both Cala's and my time. Cala examined my hair and cut it dry. Wow - all my curls bounced back so much that I'm even thinking I am a 3 rather than a 2. It was a drive for me, but well worth it. Thanks Cala!

Cala shared just three new tips with me about how to handle my curly hair and I will never subject my hair to blow-dry "torching" again!
