While I got a great cut in Nov. 2010, I too wasn't thrilled with Mr. Lentini himself. His ego could have filled the salon without much trouble but I thought I could handle dealing with it if I only came in 3 or 4 times a year for a cut. However, I changed my mind when he mentioned he was available for an affair if I was ever in the market for one.

For the past 10 years, I've either been taking the train into NYC to get a Deva cut, or hunting around for someone who does the Deva cut in the Philadelphia area. Schlepping to NYC was always a pain, but that was the only way I knew I'd get a good haircut. Until now.
On my last trip to Deva, I let them talk me into coloring my gray - which I regretted immediately. Four months later, I knew I needed to do something drastic to phase in my now inch-long salt and pepper roots. Since my hair was past shoulder length, I knew this root problem was only going to get worse and worse.
I was a little nervous going to Joseph: I had read all of the reviews, good and bad, and this was going to be a pretty drastic cut. In the end, I had no reason to be nervous. He gave me an amazing haircut, and I didn't see any of the weird personal stuff that people complain about.
I truly can't say enough about the cut. No, it wasn't in the Deva style, he did cut wet, but he absolutely knows what he is doing with curly hair. I've gotten nothing but compliments. It's been two weeks now, and the cut is easy to maintain, versatile (I can style it in lots of different ways) and very flattering.
I think this is the beginning of a new hair chapter in my life, and it looks like it's going to be fun!

Anyone with curly hair knows how hard it is to find a salon that specializes in curly hair. Once you find one, it's still difficult finding that one stylist who REALLY is familiar with curly hair and REALLY knows how to cut and style it. I finally found one. After years of searching, I finally discovered Joseph at SignaCurl (Signatures) over a year ago and have never been happier with every aspect of my hair. I walked in there the first time, not only in bad need of a haircut, but in worse shape for a color correction. I walked out with a gorgeous natural color and a superb cut. Joseph gave me the 1st fantastic haircut that I've ever had (and I'm 29). He's a certified curly expert and it shows. His salon is super chill - open space, bright, retro. He's got a quirky, honest, up-front, "what you see is what you get" personality, which is refreshing bc I want to know what I'm getting from my hairstylist.
I recommend Joseph and Signatures for any curly people out there. I know it's just hair but it's so much more than just hair- so I'm not going anywhere else. No way, no how.

I have been seeing Joseph for 25 years. He styled my hair for my wedding. Since my move from Philadelphia, I travel 90 minutes six times a year to have my hair cut by him. The trip is definitely worth it! I have had my hair cut in places like LA and London at salons which are renowned. I have never had a better cut at any of them. Joseph is great at working with your hair to maximize what you were born with. Each of his haircuts is unique and will definitely turn heads. Whats more, your haircut will look great 6 weeks later.
Because his haircut is customized to the client, he may take more time with the person ahead of you and run late for your appointment. You will get the same kind of attention so be patient. If you are pressed for time, make the appointment when you can afford to relax a bit. If you don't believe me, give him a try and see for yourself.

I just got a terrific haircut from Joseph today. I walked out of his salon feeling at least 10 years younger. This is the 6th or 7th haircut Joseph has given me, and he has proven to be the only stylist who can transform the unruly hair I've struggled with all my life into into an exciting and flattering style. It is obvious that Joseph is dedicated to his art and to making his clients look their very best. Plus, he is an interesting conversationalist, so that the time in his chair (and he spends a lot of time with each of his clients)goes by quickly. It took me into my 40's but I finally found someone who truly understands how to cut curly hair. From the moment I walk out of the salon to 5 weeks later when I return, my hair looks great and most importantly is really easy to manage. The first time Joseph cut my hair he said to me "You're not going to have to think about your hair at all. No more fussing to make it look good". I was hopeful, but skeptical at first.

I have never been so unhappy with my hair cut as well as the way I was treated. First off, Joseph was running so late and I felt like I was wasting my time waiting for him. He had one client in the chair and the whole studio gave off a weird vibe. He then proceeded to tell me that he wanted me to take off my clothes and put the robe on, he then made a joke that he just wanted to see my naked. First strike. Then while I was sitting in the chair he made a few comments about maybe spending a night together. I have never been so uncomfortable in my life. I don't understand why people rave about this lunatic! I spent a fortune there and was so unhappy with the outcome! I will NEVER step foot in there again. I now tell people NOT to go to Signatures. There is absolutely no professionalism at all. He isn't even that talented. He made my hair look more frizzy and he cut it way too short.

I've never had so many compliments about my curly hair! Since Joseph started styling my hair, it's been great!
For years, I had lifeless hair--didn't know what to do with my curls, or should I say, frizz. I didn't go to a stylist for about 20 years because the last cut before I stopped going was so horrid I vowed never to go back.
Then my husband found Signatures and suggested I go. From the moment Joseph looked at my hair, he knew what it needed. I lost all the years of fear about getting my hair cut.
The first cut was lovely and looking at the mirror reflected a very happy face! My hair was beautiful.
Each time since, the cuts and color have been wonderful.
Joseph CERTAINLY KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING with curly hair! And our conversations are always interesting, too!

I went here 2 years ago and my experience was definitely not what I expected from reading the reviews on this site. Joseph made me feel uncomfortable the whole time, and criticized me for the dryness of my hair. Then he also shamed me for getting a cut at Ouidad (when his website claimed he was Ouidad certified at the time!) I left the salon and immediately put my hair up because it was so poofy, and not at all how I would have liked to see it styled. Worst of all, I straightened my hair on a whim about 2 weeks later and one side was CONSIDERABLY longer than the other! I had to take scissors to my own hair because of his mistake. Needless to say, I will not be going back to Signatures again.

This guy is an absolute maniac!!
I went to him three times too many. The first haircut was ok, but I was there about four hours. The second cut was not good, but I thought maybe he had an off day. The third cut was rediculous. It was flat on top and puffy at the sides, with lots of uneven strands throughout the head. He made me look like Ronald Mc Donald. I thought it was a sick joke. The salon is run very unprofessionally. There is a weird naked mannequin that he places in different strange positions every day. He yells at his staff and berates them in front of the customers and apparently mostly every employee has quit in the short time that I've known of this salon. He also does annoying things to the customers such as makes them hold his hair clips and accessories and snaps his finger for the customer to hand him what he needs. He also says lascivious things to customers such as asking them about their under garments and sex lives. He also begs customers to write good reviews on naturallycurly.com and suggests that their next haircut will be a reflection of their comments. Beware of this guy if you value your hair and your stress level!!

I was like many others with curly hair -- I would dread a visit to the salon knowing that the stylist would try to talk me into some straight-hair style that would leave me with the predicament of having to blowdry my hair everyday or in some cases, give me that kind of style regardless of my insistance that I actually LIKE my natural curls. Then several years ago I was told by a friend of a friend that Joseph was THE guy to go to in Philly if you have curly hair, and I haven't looked back since. Every single time I've been in, I've left with exactly what I was looking for -- an incredible cut that supports and showcases my curly hair. Because I work about an hour outside of Center City, I usually have to go through traffic hell in order to get there in time for an evening appointment, but the minute I walk in the door Joseph does his magic de-frazzling not just my hair, but my entire attitude. I would recommend him to anyone and everyone with curly hair, although with one piece of advice: TRUST HIM -- HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING. If you are only comfortable when you can dictate exactly how your stylist should do his or her job, then cut your own hair or go somewhere else. For the past 3 years, I've never said anything to Joseph regarding the length I want, the layers I want or the look that I want. Why? Because I know I don't have to. And like I said before, I have never walked out the door with anything less than EXACTLY what I wanted.

I heard about the NaturallyCurly website through a friend and checked out some of the products, everything I tried still seemed to depend on the weather.
Then I went to Joe at Signatures Salon - I can't believe it! My hair is bouncey, curly and tamed.
He REALLY understands curly hair (being one himself). Not only do I love it - my husband says he has never seen my hair look so good in 20 years!
Hmmm.
I highly recommend him to anyone who thinks they've tried everything, but are doomed to a helmut of unruly hair...He works magic!

Joseph is definitely an interesting guy - fun to talk to and has his own opinion about what style is best for a curly girl. If you can relax enough and let him take over, he will do what's best for your hair....you won't be disappointed with his "art". He studies your hair and he studies your head, cutting each curl with care. For the first time in 5 years (after many bad hair cuts in Philly after my move here), I walked out of the salon happy with my cut. I highly recommend Joseph and the "experience" at Signatures!

I highly recommend Joseph at Signatures. I read in a New York Times article that he specializes in cutting hair for it's natural texture. I have not been disappointed, and I have difficult hair. I have wavy/curly hair that has been relaxed more times than I can count. I suppose it never occurred to my mother to let me wear my hair natural...one day I decided - enough is enough, no more chemical treatments. But then I was faced with the task of finding someone who could "deal" with my multi-textured, damaged, tired curls. I heard about Joseph at Signatures Salon from a TV spot on the news. The newscaster, Tamela Edwards, went to see him about her naturally curly hair that she always wears straight on television. She looked amazing! I took it as a sign and made my appointment that day! Joseph spent almost 2 hours cutting - a little bit here, a little bit there. He really focused on getting the most out of my out of whack curls. He talked to me in depth about the textures, and what my curls will come to look like if I stop treating it with chemicals. I must say that it took a lot of guts on part to give up my old perception, and it was worth it! Had an incredibly great OUIDAD cut in Livingston,NJ then moved to the Philadelphia area. Went to Signatures and had 3 BAD experiences. 2 BAD haircuts(I gave Joseph a second chance and paid in full both times). He blamed the Ouidad cut for the poor outcome of his first cut. After the second bad cut I called to ask if he could fix it and was told to come in at a certain time. I came in as I was told and he would not do anything and told me to come back again. He had no regard for my time and seemed annoyed that I was unhappy with the cut. 3 strikes and you are out Joseph!

I went back for my second cut with Joseph and I am just not impressed by this guy or his haircuts. I was neither impressed or disappointed with the first cut so I decided to come back, mostly because of the reviews on this site. You have heard it all before, almost 38 years of bad haircuts and then my sister reads an article in the Inqirer, and she says, "magic will happen." So for my 40th birthday, my mom and sister took me to Joseph for "the cut" (by the way, I hadn't had my hair cut in two years due to a screw up by a previous stylist.) What an experience! We adored Joseph's irreverant style and the mood of the salon. I have continued to see Joseph and finally this fall made the BIG decision of allowing him to take off length and add color. (The gray had gone haywire!) I walked out of there yesterday looking ten years younger. The cut and color are perfect for my personality and lifestyle. Working with Joseph to say the least is interesting, one never knows what the conversation is going to be, but he never fails to make me laugh at jokes, myself, him or just life in general. He is a delightful eccentric who knows curly hair like no one else I have ever met. He speaks his mind and in this day and age that is quite refreshing. For those who can't deal with him or have a negative thing to say should get the rod out of their spine and realize life is too short to be miserable and mean and sit back relax and enjoy the ride that is the Joseph experience. I have just found my new hairdresser! For years I have done my own hair at home. In the past, everytime I went to a salon I left disappointed. I figured, why pay people to mess up what I can ruin on my own for free? But, Joseph at Signatures salon (and Selma, the very nice hair wash girl) have renewed my confidence in hair styists! The haircut joseph gave me was amazing! I am African American with very thick, dry, type 3c/4a curly hair and I was worried that they would not know how to handle it, but Joseph did an amazing job cutting and styling it. He and Selma gave me lots of great advice on how to take care of and style my hair own my own as well (although they would have had an easier time detangling my hair if they used a wider toothed comb--maybe next time I will bring my own comb and ask them to use it). I would recommend Signatures to anyone and I am definitely going back!

After reading so many positive testimonials about Joseph Lentini I decided to have him style my curly, thin, shoulder length hair.
While evaluating my hair he didn't want to hear about the way I style my hair or any input from me at all. I told him that I didn't want my hair short and he just brushed it off saying that he knew what to do. I wish I had followed my instinct and just walked away. Instead I trusted that he did indeed know what he was doing and let him cut my hair. The end result was a short frizzy mess long on top and short at the bottom and sides so that I am not able to put my hair up or in a ponytail. When I looked at my hair I was devastated but he just walked away and started to take care of another client.

I just had my hair cut by Joseph at Signatures. He has a unique artistic approach toward cutting curly hair. My hair looks AMAZING! In addition to my new amazing looking hair, it feels soft and healthy. After getting over the initial shock (pleasantly shocked, of course) of my new fabulous haircut, I realized that Joseph is a genius with shape. The shape of my new cut is doing wonders for my whole face! I did not tell Joseph what I wanted done to my hair but instead, let him do what needed to be done to my hair and he totally lived up to his reputation! The staff at Signatures were very friendly and helpful and were patient and informative when teaching me the right way to take care of my curls. Selma was particularly helpful in this area. I was a little nervous after reading some negative reviews about this salon, but went since I already had an appointment and was pleasantly surprised! Good conversation and a great cut...the type of atmosphere that often comes with a good salon. I came in from Los Angeles to visit a friend, and decided to try this salon that I had heard so much about. I am thrilled with my haircut, and am actually considering flying in a couple of times a year because my hair hasn't been this full of life, yet controlled, since I was 6! Joseph clearly knew what he was doing and spent so much time whipping my hair back into shape. He still managed to keep some of my length, despite the damage that I have from highlighting. I have a tired, old story. My hair was always thick, curly, and frizzy and I just didn't know how to deal with it. I did the only thing that made sense to me and I had it relaxed. It was wonderful at first, but soon I realized that my hair was still the same. Twenty one years this went on until I got wind of a stylist who saves people from the monster on their heads.
I walked into Signatures not knowing what to expect. I wondered if all the comments I read was just hype, but I soon was a believer. Joseph told me that I wouldn't walk out with my hair cured from the damage I've done, but he did say that it was a step in the right direction to fix it slowly. He and Salma took all the time they needed to start the healing process and I was so grateful. I wasn't expecting a miracle, but it was I miracle that I got.
I left that day with beautiful, curly hair even though most of it was still relaxed. I left that day feeling better about my hair and about myself. I left that day and converted two people to see Joseph the next time I go in not by saying a word, but with showing them my new hair and then telling them the wonderful experience I had. The style lasted all night as well. I went to a concert that night and rocked out not giving a thought to my hair and it stayed in perfect condition. I even caught one of the bands members looking at me and I like to think it was because of my wonderful hair!

I have just recieved the most magnificent haircut and style from Joseph at Signatures of Philadelphia. He has conformed my hair to be light and breezy just like the summer winds! But I still have the wonderful volume of curly hair. It is styled to such perfection that I do not have to do anything to it because the cut allows the curls to be wildly tamed. Summer must haves for girls with curly hair; a haircut from Joseph of Signatures. You will never let another person touch your mane!

Ok. So I should have written this review 4 months ago after my first haircut, but it should carry even more weight now after my second haircut by Joseph. My hair looked great after I left the salon that day 4 months ago, it looked great for the ENTIRE 4 months and even looked fabulous when I went out for the evening the night before I had my second haircut. (but I needed a trim so my hair would look healthy as well as stylish). Joseph spent hours with me on both occasions until my hair was not only cut to perfection, but washed, conditioned, dried and styled to perfection as well. I would urge anyone with curly hair to see Joseph for a great experience that will last a long time.

Joseph not only understands curly hair, he truly loves what he does - and it shows. I immediately relaxed and let him work his magic. My hair was very damaged with no style or shape. Joseph obviously knows his stuff. When I first got there he told me I obviously hadn't been getting my hair cut professionally (which happened to be true) he then proceeded to tell me that I had to stay with him so that he could "fix it" because one hair would not be enough. Then he started cutting... I may not know a lot about hair but I think I know enough about my hair (long, thick, heavy, curly and a lot of it). Well, after all was said and done my hair looked great (and he still hadn't styled it or put any product in my hair).
Joseph is clearly the man you go to when you've forgotten what your curly hair was supposed to look like, but be prepared to pay a pretty penny!

After trying MANY stylists in the Philadelphia area, I can truly recommend Joseph at Signatures Salon. Each of the 6 or so haircuts that I have had have been consistently excellent. The shape and curl allows me to basically wash and wear my hair and his helpful instructions about haircare have made me a steady returnee.

I went to Signatures Hair because I read in a magazine that Joseph knows how to cut curly hair qith the OUIDAD Technique, so I was excited. But when I arrived, I talked to the assistant and she kept telling me how dry my hair was and it was recommended I buy all these products. Ok, I thought maybe my hair IS that dry. Then Joseph was finally free and he rushed me to get changed and didn't even let me tell him what I wanted. He seemed annoyed when I was telling him and even rolled his eyes. Maybe he is a great stylist, but I really doubt it because besides having good skills a stylist needs to LISTEN. He seemed increasingly annoyed as I was asking questions. So I decided to leave and never got my hair cut. WHat a horrible attitude!!! No thanks!!!

Joseph is a curlyhead's best friend! He really takes in the whole picture from the moment you walk in - the state your hair is in, how your current style looks, and what you're comfortable with. He patiently cuts your hair, responding to how the curls flow as they are being cut. Once your hair is styled and dried, he has a look to make any adjustments if they are needed. I think it's rare to find a stylist with such sensitivity, and it shows through in how beautiful your hair looks.

Just went for my second haircut with Joseph the haircut artist... it is a cut that I never imagined would look good on me but it does! At my first appointment I was lectured about how to take better care of my hair and I did everything I was supposed to and it worked! My hair is so much better now and looks great. The first person I saw after I washed and styled my own hair after it was cut (it always looks great when you leave the salon but doing it yourself is a different story) said, "Wow, your hair looks great. What did you do to it?" No more frustration and going out the door feeling less than my best! Can't wait to go back for my next cut!

A friend referred me to Joseph, so I drove 2.5 hours to see him. It was definitely worth it! I have very long, very thick hair, so it's always fallen straight. Joseph cut and styled it in such a way that I've got more wave than I've seen in years (and it's still long). I've gotten lots of compliments too. I'd probably drive even further if I had to.

Let me start off by saying that I dread getting my hair cut. I hate it so much that it's been about a year since I actually stepped foot into a salon. I usually just get my mom or someone else to trim off my dead ends. Most people think I am weird for doing this but I have good reasons. Just about every time I get my hair cut I leave wanting to cry because they butchered my hair. I truly believed that no one knows how to cut curly hair. That was until last week.
For a Christmas present my mom got me an appointment to Signatures salon so that Joseph could cut/fix my curly hair. As usual I was very skeptical but Joseph has changed my beliefs! There actually is someone out there who knows how to cut my curls. At Signature not only did I love my new hair cut but they took the time to explain how to take care of my hair and recommended some great products. Joseph took his time and cut every curl with precision. He even had me flip my head over and cut my hair upside down. It was an experience! Everyone is telling me how much fuller and healthier my hair looks. I love it! If you have unmanageable curly hair you must go see Joseph!

While I got a great cut in Nov. 2010, I too wasn't thrilled with Mr. Lentini himself. His ego could have filled the salon without much trouble but I thought I could handle dealing with it if I only came in 3 or 4 times a year for a cut. However, I changed my mind when he mentioned he was available for an affair if I was ever in the market for one.

For the past 10 years, I've either been taking the train into NYC to get a Deva cut, or hunting around for someone who does the Deva cut in the Philadelphia area. Schlepping to NYC was always a pain, but that was the only way I knew I'd get a good haircut. Until now. On my last trip to Deva, I let them talk me into coloring my gray - which I regretted immediately. Four months later, I knew I needed to do something drastic to phase in my now inch-long salt and pepper roots. Since my hair was past shoulder length, I knew this root problem was only going to get worse and worse. I was a little nervous going to Joseph: I had read all of the reviews, good and bad, and this was going to be a pretty drastic cut. In the end, I had no reason to be nervous. He gave me an amazing haircut, and I didn't see any of the weird personal stuff that people complain about. I truly can't say enough about the cut. No, it wasn't in the Deva style, he did cut wet, but he absolutely knows what he is doing with curly hair. I've gotten nothing but compliments. It's been two weeks now, and the cut is easy to maintain, versatile (I can style it in lots of different ways) and very flattering. I think this is the beginning of a new hair chapter in my life, and it looks like it's going to be fun!

Anyone with curly hair knows how hard it is to find a salon that specializes in curly hair. Once you find one, it's still difficult finding that one stylist who REALLY is familiar with curly hair and REALLY knows how to cut and style it. I finally found one. After years of searching, I finally discovered Joseph at SignaCurl (Signatures) over a year ago and have never been happier with every aspect of my hair. I walked into Signatures with a chip on my shoulder about all the awful haircuts I've had in the past. Then I met Joseph, who spoke to my hair: and my hair fell in love with him. Joseph gave me the 1st fantastic haircut that I've ever had (and I'm 29). He's a certified curly expert and it shows. His salon is super chill - open space, bright, retro. He's got a quirky, honest, up-front, "what you see is what you get" personality, which is refreshing bc I want to know what I'm getting from my hairstylist. I recommend Joseph and Signatures for any curly people out there. I know it's just hair but it's so much more than just hair- so I'm not going anywhere else. No way, no how.

I have been seeing Joseph for 25 years. He styled my hair for my wedding. Since my move from Philadelphia, I travel 90 minutes six times a year to have my hair cut by him. The trip is definitely worth it! I have had my hair cut in places like LA and London at salons which are renowned. I have never had a better cut at any of them. Joseph is great at working with your hair to maximize what you were born with. Each of his haircuts is unique and will definitely turn heads. Whats more, your haircut will look great 6 weeks later. Because his haircut is customized to the client, he may take more time with the person ahead of you and run late for your appointment. You will get the same kind of attention so be patient. If you are pressed for time, make the appointment when you can afford to relax a bit. If you don't believe me, give him a try and see for yourself.

I just got a terrific haircut from Joseph today. I walked out of his salon feeling at least 10 years younger. This is the 6th or 7th haircut Joseph has given me, and he has proven to be the only stylist who can transform the unruly hair I've struggled with all my life into into an exciting and flattering style. It is obvious that Joseph is dedicated to his art and to making his clients look their very best. It took me into my 40's but I finally found someone who truly understands how to cut curly hair. From the moment I walk out of the salon to 5 weeks later when I return, my hair looks great and most importantly is really easy to manage. I have never been so unhappy with my hair cut as well as the way I was treated. First off, Joseph was running so late and I felt like I was wasting my time waiting for him. He had one client in the chair and the whole studio gave off a weird vibe. He then proceeded to tell me that he wanted me to take off my clothes and put the robe on, he then made a joke that he just wanted to see my naked. First strike. Then while I was sitting in the chair he made a few comments about maybe spending a night together. I have never been so uncomfortable in my life. I don't understand why people rave about this lunatic! I spent a fortune there and was so unhappy with the outcome! I will NEVER step foot in there again. I now tell people NOT to go to Signatures. There is absolutely no professionalism at all. He isn't even that talented. He made my hair look more frizzy and he cut it way too short.

I've never had so many compliments about my curly hair! Since Joseph started styling my hair, it's been great! For years, I had lifeless hair--didn't know what to do with my curls, or should I say, frizz. I didn't go to a stylist for about 20 years because the last cut before I stopped going was so horrid I vowed never to go back. Then my husband found Signatures and suggested I go. From the moment Joseph looked at my hair, he knew what it needed. I lost all the years of fear about getting my hair cut. The first cut was lovely and looking at the mirror reflected a very happy face! My hair was beautiful. Each time since, the cuts and color have been wonderful. I went here 2 years ago and my experience was definitely not what I expected from reading the reviews on this site. Joseph made me feel uncomfortable the whole time, and criticized me for the dryness of my hair. Then he also shamed me for getting a cut at Ouidad (when his website claimed he was Ouidad certified at the time!) I left the salon and immediately put my hair up because it was so poofy, and not at all how I would have liked to see it styled. Worst of all, I straightened my hair on a whim about 2 weeks later and one side was CONSIDERABLY longer than the other! I had to take scissors to my own hair because of his mistake. Needless to say, I will not be going back to Signatures again.

This guy is an absolute maniac!! I went to him three times too many. The first haircut was ok, but I was there about four hours. The second cut was not good, but I thought maybe he had an off day. The third cut was rediculous. It was flat on top and puffy at the sides, with lots of uneven strands throughout the head. He made me look like Ronald Mc Donald. I thought it was a sick joke. The salon is run very unprofessionally. There is a weird naked mannequin that he places in different strange positions every day. He yells at his staff and berates them in front of the customers and apparently mostly every employee has quit in the short time that I've known of this salon. He also does annoying things to the customers such as makes them hold his hair clips and accessories and snaps his finger for the customer to hand him what he needs. He also says lascivious things to customers such as asking them about their under garments and sex lives. He also begs customers to write good reviews on naturallycurly.com and suggests that their next haircut will be a reflection of their comments. Beware of this guy if you value your hair and your stress level!!

I was like many others with curly hair -- I would dread a visit to the salon knowing that the stylist would try to talk me into some straight-hair style that would leave me with the predicament of having to blowdry my hair everyday or in some cases, give me that kind of style regardless of my insistance that I actually LIKE my natural curls. Then several years ago I was told by a friend of a friend that Joseph was THE guy to go to in Philly if you have curly hair, and I haven't looked back since. Every single time I've been in, I've left with exactly what I was looking for -- an incredible cut that supports and showcases my curly hair. Because I work about an hour outside of Center City, I usually have to go through traffic hell in order to get there in time for an evening appointment, but the minute I walk in the door Joseph does his magic de-frazzling not just my hair, but my entire attitude. I would recommend him to anyone and everyone with curly hair, although with one piece of advice: TRUST HIM -- HE KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING. If you are only comfortable when you can dictate exactly how your stylist should do his or her job, then cut your own hair or go somewhere else. For the past 3 years, I've never said anything to Joseph regarding the length I want, the layers I want or the look that I want. Why? Because I know I don't have to. Then I went to Joe at Signatures Salon - I can't believe it! My hair is bouncey, curly and tamed. He REALLY understands curly hair (being one himself). Joseph is definitely an interesting guy - fun to talk to and has his own opinion about what style is best for a curly girl. If you can relax enough and let him take over, he will do what's best for your hair....you won't be disappointed with his "art". He studies your hair and he studies your head, cutting each curl with care. For the first time in 5 years (after many bad hair cuts in Philly after my move here), I walked out of the salon happy with my cut. I highly recommend Joseph and the "experience" at Signatures!

I highly recommend Joseph at Signatures. I read in a New York Times article that he specializes in cutting hair for it's natural texture. I have not been disappointed, and I have difficult hair. I have wavy/curly hair that has been relaxed more times than I can count. I suppose it never occurred to my mother to let me wear my hair natural...one day I decided - enough is enough, no more chemical treatments. But then I was faced with the task of finding someone who could "deal" with my multi-textured, damaged, tired curls. I heard about Joseph at Signatures Salon from a TV spot on the news. The newscaster, Tamela Edwards, went to see him about her naturally curly hair that she always wears straight on television. She looked amazing! I took it as a sign and made my appointment that day! Joseph spent almost 2 hours cutting - a little bit here, a little bit there. He really focused on getting the most out of my out of whack curls. He talked to me in depth about the textures, and what my curls will come to look like if I stop treating it with chemicals. I must say that it took a lot of guts on part to give up my old perception, and it was worth it! Had an incredibly great OUIDAD cut in Livingston,NJ then moved to the Philadelphia area. Went to Signatures and had 3 BAD experiences. 2 BAD haircuts(I gave Joseph a second chance and paid in full both times). He blamed the Ouidad cut for the poor outcome of his first cut. After the second bad cut I called to ask if he could fix it and was told to come in at a certain time. I came in as I was told and he would not do anything and told me to come back again. He had no regard for my time and seemed annoyed that I was unhappy with the cut. 3 strikes and you are out Joseph!

I went back for my second cut with Joseph and I am just not impressed by this guy or his haircuts. I was neither impressed or disappointed with the first cut so I decided to come back, mostly because of the reviews on this site. However, I just can't understand how so many people had such a great experience. Anyway, don't expect your appointment to start on time. So for my 40th birthday, my mom and sister took me to Joseph for "the cut" (by the way, I hadn't had my hair cut in two years due to a screw up by a previous stylist.) What an experience! We adored Joseph's irreverant style and the mood of the salon. I have continued to see Joseph and finally this fall made the BIG decision of allowing him to take off length and add color. (The gray had gone haywire!) I walked out of there yesterday looking ten years younger. The cut and color are perfect for my personality and lifestyle. Working with Joseph to say the least is interesting, one never knows what the conversation is going to be, but he never fails to make me laugh at jokes, myself, him or just life in general. He is a delightful eccentric who knows curly hair like no one else I have ever met. He speaks his mind and in this day and age that is quite refreshing. For those who can't deal with him or have a negative thing to say should get the rod out of their spine and realize life is too short to be miserable and mean and sit back relax and enjoy the ride that is the Joseph experience. I went for my first haircut with Joseph yesterday after reading about him on this site, and I was not disappointed! I am so happy with the way my hair turned out. I was terrified to switch stylists (as every curly girl has bad experiences in her past) and skeptical that anyone could rid me of the triangle-shaped hair I have had for so many years, and he did it! The pieces fall just right now and I love the look. I will definitely be going back.

Boy can Joseph cut hair! He was working on someone with straight hair when I came in but gave me a killer curly cut and style I love. He is outspoken but knows what he is talking about. Even my husband loved it! He seems to have a knack for seeing what suits you. and the cut is perfect! Made me wish I was not living in Los Angeles. Now I am scheming on how soon I can make a trip to Philadelphia again!

I have just found my new hairdresser! For years I have done my own hair at home. In the past, everytime I went to a salon I left disappointed. I figured, why pay people to mess up what I can ruin on my own for free? But, Joseph at Signatures salon (and Selma, the very nice hair wash girl) have renewed my confidence in hair styists! The haircut joseph gave me was amazing! I am African American with very thick, dry, type 3c/4a curly hair and I was worried that they would not know how to handle it, but Joseph did an amazing job cutting and styling it. He and Selma gave me lots of great advice on how to take care of and style my hair own my own as well (although they would have had an easier time detangling my hair if they used a wider toothed comb--maybe next time I will bring my own comb and ask them to use it). I would recommend Signatures to anyone and I am definitely going back! Leslie

I found Joseph from this website, went once and did not and will not return. The cut was no different from any other cut, except the price. I was told how dry my hair was and some products were recommended to me. But....he was very unprofessional and made me very uncomfortable.

After reading so many positive testimonials about Joseph Lentini I decided to have him style my curly, thin, shoulder length hair. While evaluating my hair he didn't want to hear about the way I style my hair or any input from me at all. I told him that I didn't want my hair short and he just brushed it off saying that he knew what to do. I wish I had followed my instinct and just walked away. Instead I trusted that he did indeed know what he was doing and let him cut my hair. The end result was a short frizzy mess long on top and short at the bottom and sides so that I am not able to put my hair up or in a ponytail. When I looked at my hair I was devastated but he just walked away and started to take care of another client.

I just had my hair cut by Joseph at Signatures. He has a unique artistic approach toward cutting curly hair. My hair looks AMAZING! In addition to my new amazing looking hair, it feels soft and healthy. After getting over the initial shock (pleasantly shocked, of course) of my new fabulous haircut, I realized that Joseph is a genius with shape. The shape of my new cut is doing wonders for my whole face! I did not tell Joseph what I wanted done to my hair but instead, let him do what needed to be done to my hair and he totally lived up to his reputation! The staff at Signatures were very friendly and helpful and were patient and informative when teaching me the right way to take care of my curls. Selma was particularly helpful in this area. I will never go anywhere else!

I was a little nervous after reading some negative reviews about this salon, but went since I already had an appointment and was pleasantly surprised! Good conversation and a great cut...the type of atmosphere that often comes with a good salon. Joseph left my length (something others always want to do away with) and a month later I can still style it & it looks great!

I came in from Los Angeles to visit a friend, and decided to try this salon that I had heard so much about. I am thrilled with my haircut, and am actually considering flying in a couple of times a year because my hair hasn't been this full of life, yet controlled, since I was 6! Joseph clearly knew what he was doing and spent so much time whipping my hair back into shape. He still managed to keep some of my length, despite the damage that I have from highlighting. I have a tired, old story. My hair was always thick, curly, and frizzy and I just didn't know how to deal with it. I did the only thing that made sense to me and I had it relaxed. It was wonderful at first, but soon I realized that my hair was still the same. Twenty one years this went on until I got wind of a stylist who saves people from the monster on their heads. I walked into Signatures not knowing what to expect. I wondered if all the comments I read was just hype, but I soon was a believer. Joseph told me that I wouldn't walk out with my hair cured from the damage I've done, but he did say that it was a step in the right direction to fix it slowly. He and Salma took all the time they needed to start the healing process and I was so grateful. I wasn't expecting a miracle, but it was I miracle that I got. I left that day with beautiful, curly hair even though most of it was still relaxed. I left that day feeling better about my hair and about myself. I left that day and converted two people to see Joseph the next time I go in not by saying a word, but with showing them my new hair and then telling them the wonderful experience I had. The style lasted all night as well. I went to a concert that night and rocked out not giving a thought to my hair and it stayed in perfect condition. I even caught one of the bands members looking at me and I like to think it was because of my wonderful hair! Joseph said I owed him. I really, really do.

I have just recieved the most magnificent haircut and style from Joseph at Signatures of Philadelphia. He has conformed my hair to be light and breezy just like the summer winds! But I still have the wonderful volume of curly hair. It is styled to such perfection that I do not have to do anything to it because the cut allows the curls to be wildly tamed. Ok. So I should have written this review 4 months ago after my first haircut, but it should carry even more weight now after my second haircut by Joseph. My hair looked great after I left the salon that day 4 months ago, it looked great for the ENTIRE 4 months and even looked fabulous when I went out for the evening the night before I had my second haircut. (but I needed a trim so my hair would look healthy as well as stylish). Joseph spent hours with me on both occasions until my hair was not only cut to perfection, but washed, conditioned, dried and styled to perfection as well. I would urge anyone with curly hair to see Joseph for a great experience that will last a long time.

Joseph obviously knows his stuff. When I first got there he told me I obviously hadn't been getting my hair cut professionally (which happened to be true) he then proceeded to tell me that I had to stay with him so that he could "fix it" because one hair would not be enough. Then he started cutting... I may not know a lot about hair but I think I know enough about my hair (long, thick, heavy, curly and a lot of it). Well, after all was said and done my hair looked great (and he still hadn't styled it or put any product in my hair). Joseph is clearly the man you go to when you've forgotten what your curly hair was supposed to look like, but be prepared to pay a pretty penny!

I went to Signatures Hair because I read in a magazine that Joseph knows how to cut curly hair qith the OUIDAD Technique, so I was excited. But when I arrived, I talked to the assistant and she kept telling me how dry my hair was and it was recommended I buy all these products. Ok, I thought maybe my hair IS that dry. Then Joseph was finally free and he rushed me to get changed and didn't even let me tell him what I wanted. He seemed annoyed when I was telling him and even rolled his eyes. Maybe he is a great stylist, but I really doubt it because besides having good skills a stylist needs to LISTEN. He seemed increasingly annoyed as I was asking questions. So I decided to leave and never got my hair cut. WHat a horrible attitude!!! No thanks!!!

Joseph is a curlyhead's best friend! He really takes in the whole picture from the moment you walk in - the state your hair is in, how your current style looks, and what you're comfortable with. He patiently cuts your hair, responding to how the curls flow as they are being cut. Once your hair is styled and dried, he has a look to make any adjustments if they are needed. I think it's rare to find a stylist with such sensitivity, and it shows through in how beautiful your hair looks.

Just went for my second haircut with Joseph the haircut artist... it is a cut that I never imagined would look good on me but it does! At my first appointment I was lectured about how to take better care of my hair and I did everything I was supposed to and it worked! My hair is so much better now and looks great. The first person I saw after I washed and styled my own hair after it was cut (it always looks great when you leave the salon but doing it yourself is a different story) said, "Wow, your hair looks great. What did you do to it?" No more frustration and going out the door feeling less than my best! Can't wait to go back for my next cut!

A friend referred me to Joseph, so I drove 2.5 hours to see him. It was definitely worth it! I have very long, very thick hair, so it's always fallen straight. Joseph cut and styled it in such a way that I've got more wave than I've seen in years (and it's still long). I've gotten lots of compliments too. I'd probably drive even further if I had to.

Let me start off by saying that I dread getting my hair cut. I hate it so much that it's been about a year since I actually stepped foot into a salon. I usually just get my mom or someone else to trim off my dead ends. Most people think I am weird for doing this but I have good reasons. Just about every time I get my hair cut I leave wanting to cry because they butchered my hair. I truly believed that no one knows how to cut curly hair. That was until last week. For a Christmas present my mom got me an appointment to Signatures salon so that Joseph could cut/fix my curly hair. As usual I was very skeptical but Joseph has changed my beliefs! There actually is someone out there who knows how to cut my curls. At Signature not only did I love my new hair cut but they took the time to explain how to take care of my hair and recommended some great products. Joseph took his time and cut every curl with precision. He even had me flip my head over and cut my hair upside down. It was an experience! Everyone is telling me how much fuller and healthier my hair looks. I love it! If you have unmanageable curly hair you must go see Joseph!
