Derek was AMAZING. granted going in was a bit intimidating, the hair cut and wash and style was amazing. He asked and listened to what i wanted, and was articulate in what he was going to do, and respect what i wanted to get done and how much i wanted to cut. after the cutting, he offered to blow dry my hair, and in total the whole this cost $50 (not including tip) this was amazing- you can guarantee that i'll be going back.

Derek is great, I went to him with a waist-lengthed mess and he kept it long while fixing the layers and adding volume. Plus he was way laid back and not judgmental about how long my hair was. He knows a lot about curly hair and has a good eye for flattering layers. The salon is pretty fun inside; bright pink, polka dots and leopard print galore. You won't be disappointed!

Stylist: Paula

Paula is AWESOME. When I mentioned that I read about her on NaturallyCurly.com, she immediately told me everything she'd do for my waves (Type 2a). She knew how to layer so that I wouldn't end up with stacking, a triangle, or any other dreaded shape. Most stylists tear through my tangled waves, but Paul was the most gentle (despite her badass appearance). She loves the science and art of hair cutting, so she's more than willing to go on for days about static combs, diffusers, etc. Not only did she give me the best haircut I can remember getting, but she also recommended where to look for work as a salon receptionist (not sure if I want to look now because then she wouldn't be my stylist!). See Paula. She'll make you tea and make you smile.

Just came back from seeing Paula and she is AMAZING! The second I mentioned that I saw recommendations for her on this site, she starting telling me everything she'd do to make my wavy hair look great. She knew not to layer my hair so I'd end up with stacking, triangles, or any of those other dreaded shapes. Most stylists tear through my tangled waves, but Paula was the most gentle! Liquid Studio's a very cool salon. Everyone working there is friendly, especially Paula who even recommended places where I could look for work as a salon receptionist. On top of all that, she was only $35! There's no need to pay more for a good cut. See Paula. She'll make you tea and make you smile.

After going to the same stylist for years and only finding myself loving my hair when it was straight, I decided to embrace my curls and to try to find a stylist who could do the same. After work one night, I called Liquid and found that Paula happened to have an opening. I arrived in her chair with an embarrassingly dried-out, long, frizzy, thick mass of curls on top and partially grown-out Coppola on the bottom. What a mess! Paula was patient, listened to my challenges and hopes, and began to cut. Paula was the first person who didn't comb my hair straight as she cut, but she "let the curls be" and cut my curls from where they fell naturally; brilliant idea! For the first time ever, I left the salon not feeling like the next day would be a guessing game as to how short my hair would be and what the shape of it would look like. Paula also introduced me to the DevaCurl line of products, which I adore, and let me try the products. Paula is talented, she's a good listener, and she's not afraid to embrace curls! My hair looks polished, liberated, and better than ever. Thank you, Paula!

Just adding another vote for Derek. I walked into Liquid feeling like my style needed a change, but was unable to articulate exactly what I wanted. I wanted to keep the overall long length, updated with a more "deliberate" style, but told him that I was unwilling to put in lots of styling time each morning. Derek seriously worked magic on my hair. It looks like a new set of curls; more body, more texture, and more consistently pretty than any cut I've ever had. I haven't had a bad hair day since the cut (seriously!). Derek had lots of ideas for my hair, but didn't push me to accept any of them and patiently talked me through my options. I've received lots of compliments on my hair and am so glad to have found Derek!

I have also been very happy with Derek. He's kind, laid-back, listens and proceeds cautiously -- with your input. He won't cut your hair dry, but he understands how wavy/curly hair behaves, and he knows what he's doing. I can't believe how reasonably priced he is. And don't be scared away by the "edgy salon" comments -- I'm a middle aged lady from the 'burbs, and I love the atmosphere in this place. They couldn't be nicer. (As long as tattoos don't freak you out, you will be just FINE).

I have to agree, and say that this is the best haircut and color I have ever gotten! Derek is so wonderful, he listens, knows how to cut curly hair to give shape without taking inches off (we all know how you can ask for a 'trim' and wind up bald!!). The color he did is also fantastic! I would definitely recommend him!!

Finally, a Curly Girl cut within city limits! I stopped a few people on the street and half of them recommended Derek, so I bit the bullet and tried him. Derek is awesome. He has thick curly hair himself. He knows the Curly Girl deal and won't look weirdly at you for conditioner-washing. And he listens. In short, this is the best $100 haircut I've ever gotten for $40. It's funky, easy to manage, long with lots of layers, and totally ME. I love it! Like other reviewers said, Liquid is an edgy salon, so be prepared for hipness, but everyone was so darn nice and laid back I wasn't at all intimidated. Go Liquid!

Stylist: Wendy

I went to Liquid Hair Studios because of many good recommendations from friends. I was tired of stylists telling me that there was nothing that I could do with my curly/wavy hair besides a straightforward cut of varying length. I wanted a cut that was shorter and funkier. I saw Wendy, who I am told is an experienced stylist, and she was excellent. We talked about my need for a cooler cut, and she recommended a stylish and attractive design that ended looking fantastic and super fun. Liquid is edgy and definitely not your average salon, so conservative people need not apply. But if you have curly hair and want a cool do, then I definitely recommend Wendy.

Liquid Studio is located in the South End, on tremont Street. The salon is fun and funky, complete with brighty-colored walls and a disco ball. EVERYone there is nice -- stylists, revdeptionist, everyone. When I first started going, my 3B/3C hair was a long frizzy mess. My first stylist was the first person I have EVER visited to give me a well-shaped, flattering and FUN haircut -- above my shoulders! I always knew I could have cute hair, and he totally brought it out! Andrew is currently my hair stylist, and I can't say enough good things about him. He is friendly, he is talented, and he even started a friendster-type website for hairstylists nationwide! He knows how to give my hair volume and life without leaving it poofy and unruly. The best part is that he only charges $35 ... $20 cheaper than anything you'd find on Newbury! GO SEE ANDREW!!
