Blog about your own grow-out challenges!
Kim Coles
Hello to all the Curly Girls!!!
Let me introduce you to my fabulous new coils! Now let me tell you the story of how I came to the decision to release them to the world.
What this new look is really all about is a personal journey. I want to show the outer manifestation of the inner work that I have been doing. I am letting go of a lot of things that don’t serve me anymore and hair that doesn’t grow from my head is just a beginning.
My hair has been in micro-braids with human hair extensions since 1991. Prior to that, I had weaves and prior to that, relaxer since before high school. Prior to that… well, I have no memory of what my hair even looked like. When I realized that I hadn’t seen my OWN hair in over 30+ years, I knew that I had to make a change. So before my 49th birthday, I got to choppin’! I was scared partly because I did not know what to expect or what products to use. Then, YouTube changed my life forever. There were amazing videos that gave me the courage and the product knowledge to take the leap to become completely authentic… minus haircolor of course. No, I ain’t rockin’ gray and kinky at the same time!
Then, I found NaturallyCurly.com and CurlyNikki and I was HOME! I’m learning so much to help me embrace my hair and I’m excited!
You see, as a little girl, I always wanted long, luxurious, bouncy hair just like the girls in magazines and shampoo commercials. Well, I never thought that my hair could do that, so I made it happen artificially. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but now, what I will focus on is growing my OWN healthy, luxurious, bouncy hair. Well…actually my hair is more springy than bouncy but that’s close enough! So, that is what this challenge is all about, getting the know-how and sharing and encouraging each other along the way. I’m still learning and I will share videos and blog posts about what is happening and I look forward to playing with all of you!
Thanks to Nikki for inviting me help co-host this fabulous party. Now, LET’S GET GROWIN’!!

I already started my own personal ‘grow out challenge’ back in May, 2010; but there’s always room for improvement and I’ve learned a lot that I can apply to this one. Looking forward to seeing the other posts along the way.

I started my transition process about 2 months ago after watching the Chri Rock documentary “Good Hair.” It is certainly a struggle after having chemically altered hair for so long…but like Ms. Kim, I am looking forward to meeting 49 with a new appreciation for my “OWN” texture.(not sure what that is : -) ) Seeing what sodium hydroxide did to the aluminum cans was just what I needed to push me to transition. I wish all transitioners “Blessed Journey” in regaining your natural nubian beauty…..

I have about 1 to 2 inches of natural hair and shoulder length processed hair. I am wearing transition styles until I can get about 3 inches of natural hair. Then I will feel comfortable with a big chop. I am looking forward to the chop on March 21st…the first day of spring!!! Very excited to see my curls for the first time in 18 years. I dont remember my hair texture as I was too young….I think I will be happy with my TWA….I cant keep my fingers out of my new growth.

Im so glad that you have this challenge. I did the BC in January and wanted to get micros while my hair grew out. After reading about how much I will learn about my hair, its texture and moisture needs, I have decided to be bold and wear my TWA and experiment with products. I haven’t seen my hair without a relaxer since I was 12 years old and I am currently 26. I am already amazed that what I thought wouldve been 4a hair (when I previously had new growth) is actually move 3b in these soft curls which I never would’ve guessed.
Thanks CurlyNikki for this website. Your experiences help (I cannot wait for my hair to get longer so I can experiment with henna). Ms. Kim Coles I am excited to keep reading your blog and following your progress.
